Ten police officers nabbed by MACC to face disciplinary action, says Bukit Aman

The Star2 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Ten police officers who were recently arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Pahang and Johor will face disciplinary action, says Bukit Aman's integrity and standard compliance department director Datuk Hamzah Ahmad.
He said an internal investigation had already been carried out, including the possibility of suspending the officers involved.
"This case involves the arrest of police officers in Pahang and Johor. It has been handed over entirely to the MACC and we will continue to cooperate throughout the investigation.
"We will await the investigation process until they are charged in court and sentenced before taking further action," he said after the 2025 Inspector-General of Police's meet and greet session with the media at Bukit Aman here on Friday (Aug 1).
Hamzah said that the police would take internal action in line with existing procedures.
The media previously reported that six police officers had been remanded until Aug 6 over an investigation involving soliciting and accepting a bribe of approximately RM12,000 in exchange for not taking action against offences related to the possession of ketum water in Temerloh, Pahang.
Additionally, four police officers were arrested by the Johor MACC on suspicion of soliciting and accepting a bribe of approximately RM635,000 from an individual in exchange for not taking action against gambling activities. – Bernama

University lecturer falls victim to two online scams, loses over RM170,000

KUALA TERENGGANU: A senior university lecturer fell victim to two separate scams just days apart — one involving a cryptocurrency investment and the other a parcel scam. Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the 54-year-old man lost RM162,170 in the cryptocurrency scam and another RM10,000 in the parcel scam. According to him, in the cryptocurrency case, the victim became acquainted with a woman from Hong Kong on a social media app on July 15. She introduced and explained cryptocurrency investments to him. "On July 19, the victim expressed interest and registered with the 'cryptoproe' investment platform. "Between July 19 and 25, he made five transactions from his Luno account to the cryptoproe platform, totalling RM162,170. "The victim only realised he had been scammed when he was unable to withdraw his 'coin' profits from the platform and was instead asked to invest more funds by the syndicate," he said. Azli added that the victim used his savings for the investment. The man filed a police report at 5.07pm yesterday. In the second case, on July 27 at about 7.15am at his residence, the victim said he met someone named Elizabeth on the same social media app and developed an online romantic relationship. He then provided her with his home address so she could send a parcel to Malaysia. "However, someone claiming to be from a courier company contacted the victim, asking for RM4,000 in delivery fees. They also claimed that customs had found cash in the parcel addressed to him. "To resolve the matter, the victim was instructed to pay RM8,500, but he was only able to pay RM6,000 to get the parcel released," Azli explained. He added that when the victim attempted to pay the remaining RM2,500 at an ATM in the city, the transaction failed. Upon checking with the bank's anti-scam unit, it was confirmed that the recipient's account had been flagged for fraudulent activity. Only then did the victim realise he had been deceived, resulting in a total loss of RM10,000 — all from his savings. "The victim filed a second police report at the Kuala Terengganu police station around 3.12pm yesterday. Both cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating," he said.

Immigration raid of Petaling Jaya restaurant and bar leads to arrests

PETALING JAYA: An immigration raid at a restaurant and bar here led to the arrest of 11 foreigners. The operation on Friday (August 1) followed a week-long surveillance and public complaints. "During the raid, all foreigners at the premises attempted to flee and hide to avoid capture. Around 20 people were inspected, and 11 Sri Lankans, including nine women and two men, were caught," the Immigration Department said in a statement on Saturday (Aug 2). Checks showed that none of those caught were victims of human trafficking, based on the National Guideline on Human Trafficking Indicators (NGHTI) 2.0. "Preliminary investigations showed no signs of exploitation towards the women, and no offences under the Atipsom Act 2007 were identified. "All the women arrested were between 20 and 33 years old and had worked at the premises for around a year with a pay of RM2,000 a month. Based on their verbal confessions, almost all passports were held by their employer before they were allowed to work there. "The modus operandi showed that the Sri Lankan women were hired as servers to entertain customers," it said. Checks also showed that the premises had been raided multiple times in the past, with action taken by the authorities. However, operations continued. "All those arrested have been brought to the KLIA depot for further investigations and action," it said.
