Yankees adding impact bat to active roster ahead of Rays series

Yahoo16 hours ago
TAMPA, Fla. — The Yankees worked deals to add two right-handed hitters who feast on left-handed pitching just prior to the July 31 trade deadline, then both quickly ended up on the injured list.
Infielder/outfielder Amed Rosario, the more accomplished acquisition, is returning Tuesday after being sidelined for 10 days with a sprained left AC joint.
The transaction will be announced Tuesday afternoon.
The Yankees freed up a roster spot during Monday's off day by optioning rookie catcher J.C. Escarra to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Yankees acquired Rosario from the Nationals on Jan. 26 for two minor-leaguers, Triple-A reliever Clayton Beeter and Rookie League outfielder Brown Martinez.
Rosario, 29, was injured on Aug. 8 when he crashed into the right field at Yankee Stadium in the 10th inning of a 5-3 loss to the Astros.
In four games with the Yankees, one as a starter in right field, the Dominican was 3-for-6 with one RBI in six at-bats against lefties and 0-for-1 with a strikeout in one plate appearance facing a right-hander.
For the season, Rosario is a .277 hitter with five homers and 19 RBI 50 games.
His splits are very telling:
He's batting .312 in 99 plate appearances against lefties, .226 in 66 times up versus righties.
Rosario probably will come off the bench in this week's two-game series against the Rays, who are scheduled to start right-handers Shane Baz on Tuesday night and Drew Rasmussen on Wednesday.
Outfielder Austin Slater, the other lefty killer who joined the Yankees in July, strained his left hamstring running out of a groundball in an Aug. 4 game in Texas and isn't expected back until September. The right-handed hitter was 0-for-7 with four strikeouts in three games with the Yankees.
Slater, 32, was traded by the White Sox to the Yankees on July 30 for A-ball right-hander Gage Ziehl.

Yankees tie club record with 9 home runs in win over Rays

Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger both hit two home runs, Aaron Judge launched his 40th of the season and the New York Yankees matched a franchise record with nine longballs Tuesday night in a 13-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Judge, Bellinger and Stanton went back-to-back-to-back in the first inning to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead four batters into the game — after the first pitch was delayed nearly two hours by rain. José Caballero connected twice for his first career multihomer game. Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Ben Rice also went deep for the Yankees, who won their fourth straight and looked awfully comfortable in a road game at their spring training home. New York took full advantage of the cozy dimensions before a crowd of 10,046 at George M. Steinbrenner Field, where the Rays are playing while Tropicana Field undergoes repairs. Bellinger finished 4 for 5 with three RBIs. Following the long rain delay, Shane Baz (8–10) gave up Judge's 429-foot shot to center field. Bellinger followed with a 381-foot drive to right, and Stanton lined a 386-footer to right-center. Baz allowed six runs and seven hits, including five homers, in three innings. He has yielded 29 earned runs in his last 28 innings (9.32 ERA) over six starts. Carlos Rodón (13-7) earned the win, allowing two runs in six innings. New York also hit nine home runs in its second game of the season, a 20-9 victory over Milwaukee on March 29 at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees became the first team in major league history to hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the first inning three times in one season (also March 29 and April 29). Judge became the fourth Yankees player with at least four 40-homer seasons, joining Babe Ruth (11), Lou Gehrig (5) and Mickey Mantle (4). Judge hit 52 homers in 2017, 62 in 2022 and 58 in 2024. Rays RHP Drew Rasmussen (10-5, 2.60 ERA) starts Wednesday against Yankees rookie Cam Schlittler (1–2, 3.94).

Yankees become 1st MLB team to hit 9 home runs in a game twice in one season

TAMPA, Fla. — José Caballero hit two home runs in 86 games with the Tampa Bay Rays this season. The speedy utilityman matched that total in one night Tuesday as the New York Yankees put on quite a power show. 'I think it's from hanging around with these guys,' Caballero explained after helping his new team to a 13-3 victory over the Rays. In his first game back at George M. Steinbrenner Field to face his former club, Caballero connected twice for his first career multihomer game. And he was hardly alone. Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger both hit two home runs, Aaron Judge launched his 40th of the season and the Yankees equaled a franchise record with nine longballs in a game delayed nearly two hours by rain at the start. New York also hit nine homers in its second game of the year, a 20-9 victory over Milwaukee on March 29 at Yankee Stadium. That makes the 2025 Bronx Bombers the first squad in major league history to hit nine home runs in a game twice in one season. 'We have a really good offense,' Bellinger said. 'You're going to have ebbs and flows of a 162-game season. It's not always going to be pretty, but we all believe in each other and the talent is there. We're doing a good job of putting it all together. It's really fun to be a part of.' It was just the fourth time a big league team has hit nine or more homers in a game. The record is 10, set by the Toronto Blue Jays on Sept. 14, 1987. Judge, Bellinger and Stanton went back-to-back-to-back off Shane Baz to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead four batters into the game. With that, New York became the first MLB team to hit three consecutive homers in the first inning three times in one season (also March 29 and April 29). 'The first three were just kind of no-doubters, with Judge hitting it almost all the way up the batter's eye, and then Belly really leaning on one,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. 'And then Giancarlo, getting to two strikes there, just shot it the other way. In their own kind of way, three really good statement at-bats.' ___ AP MLB:
