
Omani team develops strong, biocompatible dental filling
Malak Khalifa Al Harthy, a member of the research team "Pulp49," told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the innovation stemmed from observing how traditional fillings often lack a balance between "strength" and "biocompatibility." This prompted the team to develop a new composite that achieves this challenging balance.
She explained that the composite is a dental filling made by integrating Omani cement with graphene sheets, resulting in a material with high mechanical efficiency and significant biocompatibility. This has led to clear and rapid restoration of surrounding dental tissues.
The development of the composite took approximately five years of research and experimentation, undergoing initial cell-level testing followed by animal trials in collaboration with the Mounted Police Command. It is now in the second phase of human trials, with preliminary results showing highly promising indicators.
Regarding the expected benefits of this composite in dentistry, she noted that it provides a cost-effective solution while enhancing the longevity and efficiency of dental treatments. This represents a major advancement in dental materials, offering improved outcomes for both patients and dentists.
Among its key advantages is high biocompatibility, as the integration of carbon nanoplates enhances the material's positive interaction with biological tissues while reinforcing its mechanical properties. This makes it particularly suitable for complex and challenging dental applications.
Additionally, the composite supports tissue regeneration by mimicking an ideal environment for the rebuilding cells in surrounding dental tissues. This effect is attributed to the synergistic interaction between the carbon nanoplates' properties and the calcium ion-based reaction of Portland cement with physiological body fluids.
The composite also exhibits superior sealing capabilities, with the increased volume and unique properties of the nanoplates enhancing its ability to fill gaps and voids, making it ideal for applications requiring tight seals or water resistance.
The innovation has been officially recognized, securing a patent in the Sultanate of Oman and international registration. The team is currently finalizing the last stages of development after receiving essential support from the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation, paving the way for its introduction to local and eventually global markets.
Addressing the challenges faced during the project, she explained that the team encountered difficulties in achieving the ideal composition, requiring multiple rounds of testing, experimentation, and model adjustments before finalizing the approved formula.
She emphasized the substantial support received, with the Oman Dental College providing necessary resources and the ROP Mounted Police contributing to trials. She also acknowledged the direct support of Dr. Abu Bakr Qateeshat, Head of Graduate Studies, Research, and Development at the college, and Dr. Aida Al-Wahaibi, as well as the encouragement from family, which served as a major motivator in achieving this milestone.
Regarding her selection to represent Oman at the International Invention, Innovation, and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) in Malaysia in 2025, she described it as an opportunity to showcase Omani youth's capabilities and their role in delivering innovative solutions that elevate Oman's global standing, while also facilitating knowledge exchange with innovators worldwide.

First successful CAR-T Cell therapy for cancer patients in Oman
Muscat: The University Medical City, represented by the National Centre for the Treatment of Blood Diseases and Bone Marrow Transplantation, has successfully implemented the first Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy in the Sultanate of Oman, utilising national medical personnel and international partnerships. CAR-T cell therapy is one of the latest immunotherapies, where T-cells are extracted from the patient, genetically modified, and then reinfused to precisely target cancer cells. The treatment has shown remarkable response rates in patients with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL) and Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL), particularly for those unresponsive to conventional therapies. Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Al Nabhani, Assistant Professor at Sultan Qaboos University's College of Medicine and Health Sciences and Consultant Hematologist specializing in lymphoma and cellular therapy at the University Medical City, stated that this accomplishment reflects the rapid advancement of Oman's healthcare sector in biomedical innovation. He emphasised that this high-efficacy treatment, previously limited to select international centers, now offers hope to patients and their families at the University Medical City in Oman. In his turn, Dr. Murtadha Khamis Al Khabouri from Sultan Qaboos University's College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Senior Consultant in Hematology and Head of the Hematology Department at the University Medical City, explained that the therapy's implementation resulted from collaboration between the lymphoma and myeloid oncology team, bone marrow transplantation, and cellular therapy at the National Centre for Blood Diseases and Bone Marrow Transplantation, the Ministry of Health's Overseas Treatment Department, and academic partners from the Fortis Memorial Research Institute. The goal is to localise cutting-edge medical technologies, establish a national center for advanced therapies, and translate research into clinical applications. Meanwhile, Dr. Sultan Salim Al Harthi, Director of the Overseas Treatment Department at the Ministry of Health, highlighted that this treatment is part of key programs to localise specialised care, easing patient burdens and delivering top-tier medical services within Oman. By introducing CAR-T therapy through the University Medical City, Oman takes a step toward medical self-sufficiency and cost reduction compared to overseas referrals, supported by substantial investments in national workforce training and global collaborations to ensure compliance with international standards.

Dhofar Governorate achieves milestones in healthcare infrastructure development
Salalah: The Dhofar Governorate is making substantial progress in executing critical healthcare infrastructure projects designed to enhance medical services and expand healthcare accessibility for both citizens and residents. These developments form part of Oman's comprehensive strategy to modernize its healthcare sector and strengthen its foundational infrastructure in alignment with national development goals and Oman Vision 2040. Dr. Hani Ahmed Al Qadi, Director General of Health Services in Dhofar Governorate, highlighted the Sultan Qaboos Hospital project in Salalah as the flagship initiative among current developments, reporting 72% completion of the RO 138 million facility. In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), Dr. Al Qadi elaborated on the hospital's specifications: "The 100,000-square-meter medical complex features a seven-story structure with a 700-bed capacity distributed across 3,238 rooms. The facility will offer specialized departments including emergency medicine, medical imaging, chemotherapy, dialysis, burn treatment, and rehabilitation services. Additionally, it will house multiple intensive care units catering to adults, pediatric patients, and neonates, complemented by comprehensive educational and support facilities." "The new hospital represents a transformative advancement for healthcare delivery in Dhofar," Dr. Al Qadi emphasized. "Beyond its expanded capacity, the institution will serve as a center for medical education and professional development, significantly enhancing our regional healthcare capabilities." The Director General further noted the accelerated progress of other healthcare initiatives across the governorate, underscoring the government's commitment to timely project completion. "These strategic developments support our decentralization efforts while maintaining the highest standards of medical care through effective public-private partnerships," he added. Key projects demonstrating notable advancement include Thumrait Hospital Conversion. The transformation of Thumrait Health Center into a full-service hospital has reached 80% completion. The upgraded facility will feature dedicated inpatient wards for male, female, and pediatric patients, isolation units, a dialysis department, and comprehensive support infrastructure including conference facilities and administrative spaces. Regarding Taqa Hospital Expansion Project, the facility has already completed four new clinical units, with ongoing emergency department renovations currently at 10% completion. As for Awqad Health Center Enhancement Project, the second phase of expansion at Awqad Health Center in Salalah has progressed to 82%, incorporating four additional clinical units to increase patient capacity. Gaza: The UAE, in cooperation with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the Gaza Strip, has delivered a shipment of medicines and medical supplies to the health sector, as part of Operation Chivalrous Knight 3. The aid will be distributed to hospitals and medical facilities to help address acute shortages and strengthen their ability to respond to emergencies. Among the recipients was Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, which received several truckloads carrying essential medicines and critical supplies. The delivery aims to boost the hospital's capacity to handle urgent cases at a time when it is facing severe shortages of medicines and equipment. Sharif Al-Nayrab, Media Director for Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 in Gaza, reaffirmed that the UAE continues to provide medical aid and pharmaceuticals to the Gaza Strip under the initiative to prevent the collapse of the healthcare system and alleviate the suffering of hospitals and patients. Heba Alnajjar, Emergency medical teams (EMT) coordinator at WHO, stated that the organisation delivered the shipment to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, containing all essential and currently unavailable medicines in Gaza's health facilities. She expressed hope for continued cooperation and the entry of more UAE aid to support the health sector. Ibrahim Al-Farra, Director of the Palestinian Aid Delivering Committee at the Ministry of Health in Gaza, described the UAE's assistance as a "lifeline" for all patients, noting that the continued supply of medicines and medical equipment revitalises hospitals and helps save the lives of the sick and wounded.
