Canada rejects claims of ongoing arms exports to Israel

Saudi Gazette5 days ago
OTTAWA — Canada on Saturday reaffirmed its ban on military exports that could be used in Gaza, dismissing claims in a July 29 report alleging Canadian arms continue to flow to Israel.
'Since January 2024, we have refused any new permits for controlled goods that could be used in Gaza. Not one has been approved,' Foreign Minister Anita Anand said in a statement.
'We went further by freezing all existing permits in 2024 that could have allowed military components to be used in Gaza, and those permits remain suspended today.'
Anand stressed that Canadian law prohibits the export of controlled goods without a valid permit and warned that violators face fines, seizures, and potential criminal charges.
'We will not allow Canadian-made weapons to contribute to this conflict in any form,' she said.
Responding to the report's allegations, Anand said the Canadian Foreign Ministry's review found several claims 'misleading' and that the items labeled as 'bullets' were actually paintball-style projectiles paired with equipment that renders a firearm inoperable with standard rounds.
'These cannot be used in combat, and if they were, they would require a permit that would not be granted,' she added.
She also noted that no mortars have been sent from Canadian manufacturers to Israel — directly or indirectly — since before the suspension of permits.
The July 29 report, produced by four NGOs — including World Beyond War, the Palestinian Youth Movement, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, and Independent Jewish Voices — cited Israeli tax data indicating Canadian goods labeled as military parts and ammunition were still reaching Israel.
Activists also presented commercial shipping documents they said confirmed ammunition and military equipment transfers from Canadian companies.
At a news conference in Ottawa on Tuesday, Yara Shoufani of the Palestinian Youth Movement said the findings show 'Canada's ongoing material support for Israel despite government denials.' — Agencies

Israel Approves Gaza City Takeover Plan Despite Rising Hostage Fears

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced early Friday that the security cabinet approved a plan to take over Gaza City, marking a significant escalation in Israel's 22-month war with Hamas. The ongoing offensive has already resulted in over 60,000 Palestinian deaths, widespread displacement, and a looming famine in the region. The late-night decision came despite international pressure to end the war and domestic protests over the fate of remaining hostages. Israel's military chief, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, reportedly warned that occupying Gaza City could endanger around 20 hostages still alive and further strain military resources. Netanyahu's office stated that the military will prepare to take control of Gaza City while providing humanitarian aid to civilians outside combat zones. Despite ongoing bombardments, Gaza City remains one of the few areas not designated as an Israeli buffer zone. A significant ground operation could displace tens of thousands more and disrupt food delivery to the already starving population. War Toll and Humanitarian Crisis Deepen Israel's offensive has displaced most of Gaza's population, destroyed vast areas, and pushed the territory toward famine. Gaza City remains one of the few areas outside Israeli buffer zones, though repeated bombardments have devastated neighborhoods. However, another major ground operation could displace tens of thousands more and further obstruct food delivery to hunger-stricken civilians. Speaking to Fox News, Netanyahu said Israel intends to control all of Gaza to remove Hamas and secure its borders. He added that Israel plans to hand the territory to Arab forces 'that will govern it properly without threatening us.' However, the approved plan stops short of full control, possibly to pressure Hamas into accepting a ceasefire on Israel's terms. Hostage Families Voice Anger Relatives of hostages accused Netanyahu of prolonging the war to appease far-right allies who favor escalation and population relocation. Yehuda Cohen, father of a captive soldier, said Netanyahu is 'working only for himself.' On Thursday, 42 people died, including 13 seeking aid in a military zone in southern Gaza. UN convoys and aid sites have repeatedly seen deadly chaos in recent weeks, with witnesses accusing Israeli forces of firing on crowds, with Israel denying targeting civilians, saying only warning shots were fired. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, Israel's military offensive has killed over 61,000 Palestinians, though the ministry does not specify how many were fighters or civilians, with the UN and independent experts consider these figures the most reliable estimates. Lebanon backs US proposal for Hezbollah to disarm

BEIRUT — Lebanon's government approved a US proposal on Thursday that would see the disarmament of the militant group Hezbollah and the Israeli military withdrawal from the south of the country. Tensions have been rising in Lebanon amid increased domestic and international pressure for Hezbollah to give up its remaining arsenal after a bruising war with Israel that ended last November with a US-brokered ceasefire. Hezbollah itself has doubled down on its refusal to disarm. Four Shiite ministers walked out before the vote. They included members of Hezbollah's parliamentary bloc and the allied Amal party, as well as independent Shiite parliamentarian Fadi Makki. Makki said in a post on X that he had "tried to work on bridging the gaps and bringing viewpoints closer between all parties, but I didn't succeed." He said he decided to pull out of the meeting after the other Shiite ministers left."I couldn't bear the responsibility of making such a significant decision in the absence of a key component from the discussion," he Lebanese government asked the national army on Tuesday to prepare a plan in which only state institutions will have weapons by the end of the the Cabinet meeting, Hezbollah accused the government of caving in to United States and Israeli pressure and said it would "treat this decision as if it does not exist."Information Minister Paul Morcos later said the Cabinet had voted to adopt a list of general goals laid out in a proposal submitted by US envoy Tom Barrack to Lebanese include the "gradual end of the armed presence of all non-state actors, including Hezbollah, in all Lebanese territory," the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, a halt to Israeli airstrikes and the release of Lebanese prisoners held in Israel, as well as the eventual demarcation of the still-disputed Lebanon-Israel border, he details of the US proposal are still under discussion, Morcos officials have said the group will not discuss giving up its remaining arsenal until Israel withdraws from five hills it is occupying inside Lebanon and stops almost daily air strikes have killed or wounded hundreds of people, most of them Hezbollah members, since the war ended in the Cabinet meeting was still underway, an Israeli strike on the road leading to Lebanon's main border crossing with Syria killed five people and injured 10 others, Lebanon's health ministry was no immediate comment from has accused Hezbollah of trying to rebuild its military capabilities and said it is protecting its border. Since the ceasefire, Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for one attack across the is ideologically aligned with the Gaza-based militant group Hamas and began firing at Israel the day after the war in the Strip started, it says in solidarity with the Palestinian Tenenti, a spokesperson for the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL), said that peacekeepers recently found a "vast network of fortified tunnels" in different areas of southern include "several bunkers, artillery pieces, multiple rocket launchers, hundreds of shells and rockets, anti-tank mines, and other explosive devices," he did not specify what group was behind the tunnels and the arms.A member of the US Congress said that Washington will push Israel to withdraw from all of southern Lebanon if the Lebanese army asserts full control over the country."We will push hard to make sure that there is — and this is something that I will work with the Israelis on — a complete withdrawal in return for the Lebanese Armed Forces showing its ability to secure all Lebanon," Darrell Issa said, after meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in did not specify whether the US would ask Israel to start withdrawing its forces from the territory it is occupying in southern Lebanon before or after Hezbollah gives up its who is of Lebanese origin, said the US must "help all the neighbours around understand that it is the exclusive right of the Lebanese Armed Forces to make decisions." — Euronews
