Summary
ForLorna Simpson, images are always up for negotiation. A pioneer of conceptual photography, the New York-based artist is lauded for her ability to unravel the ways we reckon and wrestle with identity, challenging traditional narratives through text and image. Expanding on her impressive oeuvre of film, photography and collage, Simpson has spent the last decade delving into painting, building on her earlier themes while introducing new visual textures and techniques.
TheMetropolitan Museum of Artis currently hosting the first museum survey dedicated to Simpson's painterly chapter. TitledSource Notes, the exhibition brings together more than 30 pieces, shedding light on the artist's technical brilliance and eye for repurposing history with poetic precision.
Works on view include 'True Value (2015) and 'Three Figures (2014), key pieces from Simpson's monumental presentation at the 2015 Venice Biennale, alongside 'did time elapse' (2024) from her newest body of paintings,Earth and Sky.
The title reflects Simpson's use of archival materials — from vintage editions ofEbonyandJetto star maps and minerals — across her practice. Cut, collaged and puzzled back together, these fragments, often arranged non-chronologically, mirror the artist's own rich, layered process. Through paint, they gain new resonance, building bridges between the past and what is deeply present.
Lorna Simpson: Source Notes is now onviewin New York through November 2.

Stephen Colbert to guest star on ‘Elsbeth' as fictional late-night host as his ‘Late Show' Emmy odds climb

Stephen Colbert will guest star on the CBS crime dramedy Elsbeth, playing a fictional late-night talk show host. According to Vulture, filming for Colbert's guest spot took place in New York this week, suggesting the role was likely planned before CBS announced on July 17 that The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will end next spring. Elsbeth star Carrie Preston recently spoke to Gold Derby about the impressive roster of guest stars the show has attracted, including Laurie Metcalf, Pamela Adlon, Tracey Ullman, and Matthew Broderick. Preston reflected on working alongside performers she admires. More from Gold Derby Kathy Bates could make Emmy history as sole nominee for 'Matlock' 'Big Brother 27' spoilers: Week 5 Veto meeting sparks tears, drama, and tough decisions ahead of eviction night 'It was a couple of times where some of my idols were on the show. These are actors that I want to be like and I am inspired by. And to have them come on the show was really extraordinary," she said. Colbert's own involvement appears to have stemmed from a February appearance by Elsbeth costar Wendell Pierce on The Late Show. During their conversation, Colbert told the actor he would love to 'play a corpse on one of these shows,' to which Pierce quipped, 'I can make that happen. I know a guy.' The timing of the guest appearance has added resonance, coming shortly after CBS' surprise announcement that The Late Show will conclude in May 2026. Colbert broke the news during his July 17 broadcast. 'Before I start the show, I want to announce something I found out just last night: Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending The Late Show in May.' Audience members responded with audible boos, prompting Colbert to add: 'Yeah, I share your feelings.' According to Gold Derby's Emmy predictions, The Late Show saw a significant surge following the cancellation announcement and now has a 26 percent chance of winning the award for Best Variety Talk Series. The Daily Show still leads the category with a 70 percent chance. Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel sits in third place and recently made headlines by endorsing Colbert via a billboard that read, 'I'm voting for Stephen.' Ex-Giants WR Odell Beckham warns people to stop texting him before ‘(you) p--- me off'

Former Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is trying to make it clear that he is not done playing football. On Tuesday, a fake Facebook page that parodies ESPN's Adam Schefter posted that Beckham was going to retire. Beckham must have received several messages from former teammates and fans because he had to address the fake report through social media. 'No seriously, please stop reading everything on the internet, and stop texting me happy retirement before you piss me off,' Beckham posted. 'That will get no response. I promise you the day I'm done, I will let u know. Again, if you text me happy retirement, I'm just going to have to block you. Thanks.' Beckham has played 11 seasons in the league, starting with the Giants in 2014 as their first-round draft pick. After catching 390 passes for 5,476 yards and 44 touchdowns in five seasons with the Giants while also making the Pro Bowl three times, Beckham was traded to the Cleveland Browns. He also had stints with the Los Angeles Rams and Baltimore Ravens, and most recently, the Miami Dolphins, where he caught nine passes for 55 yards in nine games last season. He is still a free agent and could sign with a team that experiences injuries at wide receiver, or a team that needs an upgrade as the regular season progresses. 'Not done for your concerns and have a blessed day,' Beckham said. Thank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust. Please consider supporting us with a subscription.
