Tesla targets June 12 launch of robotaxi service in Austin
[SAN FRANCISCO] Tesla is poised to begin its long-awaited robotaxi service in Austin on Jun 12, according to a source familiar with the matter, a milestone in Elon Musk's plan to reshape the company around driverless vehicles and artificial intelligence.
The previously unreported date was discussed internally and could still change, said the source, asking not to be identified because the information is private. Musk has previously said the service would begin by the end of June.
In preparation for the launch, the company this week operated a test vehicle on public roads in Austin with no one in the driver's seat for the first time, according to the source. A Tesla engineer was riding in a passenger seat of a Model Y SUV, which drove autonomously with no remote operation, the source said.
Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The planned start of autonomous service builds upon testing that the electric vehicle maker has been doing recently with safety drivers around the city, carrying employees ahead of the public rollout. Musk, Tesla's chief executive officer, has said robotaxi service – initially using consumer models before eventually incorporating a purpose-built vehicle known as Cybercab – will be central to Tesla's business in the future.
Its shares rose 1.1 per cent as of 4.09 pm after regular trading in New York. The stock declined 12 per cent this year to Wednesday's close.

The company demonstrated the Cybercab at a flashy event last year in California, giving attendees rides in prototypes of the vehicle, which will have no steering wheel or pedals. But the routes were on private land, sidestepping permitting requirements.
Texas, where Tesla is headquartered, has relatively relaxed rules around autonomous driving, which is regulated much like any other type of passenger vehicle operation. The driverless vehicles are required to have cameras and be able to follow traffic laws and have insurance. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which regulates rideshare services, does not currently list Tesla as a rideshare licensee.
The city of Austin does not regulate self-driving vehicles, but has set up a task force that coordinates with Tesla and other autonomy companies.
The state capital has become a focal point for the growing robotaxi industry, with companies such as Alphabet's Waymo already operating there. Tesla vehicles with manufacturer plates have become a frequent sight in the south and southeast portions of the city as the company has expanded testing with safety drivers.
Musk said this month that Tesla would initially roll out a fleet of about 10 self-driving robotaxis in Austin before expanding to a thousand vehicles within a few months. BLOOMBERG

Black eye? That's just from my son, says Elon Musk
Billionaire Elon Musk sporting a black eye at his Oval Office farewell with US President Donald Trump on May 30. PHOTO: EPA-EFE Black eye? That's just from my son, says Elon Musk WASHINGTON - Billionaire Elon Musk sparked fevered speculation when he turned up with a black eye for his Oval Office farewell with US President Donald Trump on May 30. But the South African-born tech magnate said he had a simple explanation: his son had punched him in the face. 'I was just horsing around with lil' X, and I said, 'go ahead punch me in the face',' 53-year-old Mr Musk told reporters when asked how he got the shiner. 'And he did. Turns out even a five-year-old punching you in the face actually is...' he added, before tailing off. 'I didn't really feel much at the time, but I guess it bruises up.' Mr Trump hosted the press conference with Mr Musk to mark the Tesla boss' last day at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (Doge). Mr Musk had expressed increasing disillusionment with the job but said he would remain a 'friend and adviser.' Mr Musk's appearance was overshadowed by allegations in the New York Times that he had engaged in heavy drug use while on the campaign trail for Mr Trump in 2024. Mr Trump said he 'didn't notice' the purple bruise next to Mr Musk's right eye, but added: 'X could do it, if you knew X.' Mr Musk's son X – full name X Æ A-Xii – made frequent appearances in the White House when his father was running Doge's cost-cutting rampage through the federal government. He even sat on Mr Musk's shoulders during the SpaceX magnate's first Oval appearance back in February, and was seen picking his nose next to Mr Trump's 'Resolute' Desk. After Mr Trump was asked for his reaction to a video of Mr Macron's wife apparently shoving the French leader's face, Mr Musk laughed and said: 'I've got a little shiner here.' Mr Musk, wearing a Doge baseball cap and a T-shirt saying 'The Dogefather,' joked about it again when he was asked how he got the injury. 'I wasn't anywhere near France,' he said. Trump, Musk offer show of unity as Tesla CEO departs government
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Friday (May 30) that billionaire Elon Musk will remain a close adviser, even after the Tesla CEO departs the administration following a chaotic four-month tenure that saw him disrupt dozens of foreign agencies in his effort to slash government spending. During a joint press conference in the Oval Office, Trump lauded Musk and defended his cost-cutting campaign as the head of the Department of Governmental Efficiency. The group has eliminated thousands of jobs and canceled billions of dollars in spending, including the majority of US foreign aid, but has thus far fallen far short of Musk's lofty initial promises. "Elon is really not leaving. He's going to be back and forth," Trump said from behind the Resolute Desk, as Musk stood to his right, wearing a black DOGE hat and a T-shirt that read "The Dogefather" in the style of the movie "The Godfather." The press conference appeared aimed at showing unity after Musk prompted frustration among White House officials this week by criticizing Trump's sweeping tax and spending bill as too expensive. Some senior aides, including Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, saw Musk's remarks on the tax bill as an open break from the administration, with Miller particularly irked by the comments, a source familiar with the matter said. Trump gave Musk a large golden key inside a wooden box bearing his signature, a gift he said he reserved only for "very special people." Musk, in turn, admired the gold finishings that Trump has installed around the Oval Office. The White House and senior aides had insisted earlier in Trump's term that Musk, the world's richest man, was a key figure who wasn't going anywhere. But more recently, they began pointing to the expiration of his 130-day mandate as a special government employee, which was set to end around May 30, as a natural endpoint. Musk, meanwhile, has said he intends to devote most of his energy to his business empire, including Tesla and SpaceX, after some investors expressed concern that DOGE was occupying too much of his time. He has also said he plans to ratchet back his political donations, after he spent nearly US$300 million backing Trump's presidential campaign and those of other Republicans in 2024. But he told reporters on Friday that he would continue to be part of Trump's circle of advisers. "I expect to remain a friend and an adviser, and certainly, if there's anything the president wants me to do, I'm at the president's service," he said. CUTS FALL SHORT Musk initially claimed DOGE would slash at least US$2 trillion in federal spending. Four months into its efforts, DOGE now estimates it has saved US$175 billion. But the details it has posted on its website, where it gives the only public accounting of those changes, add up to less than half of that figure. US Treasury summaries reviewed by Reuters show that the agencies targeted by DOGE have cut about US$19 billion in combined spending compared to the same period last year, far below Musk's original target and amounting to just about 0.5% of total federal expenditures. Trump and DOGE have managed to cut nearly 12%, or 260,000, of the 2.3 million-strong federal civilian workforce largely through threats of firings, buyouts and early retirement offers, a Reuters review of agency departures found. Musk's prominent status as the face of DOGE's cost-cutting efforts has prompted widespread protests at Tesla outlets in the US and Europe, driving down both its sales and its stock price. Musk said on Friday that downsizing the government had proven more difficult than he expected, blaming what he called the "banal evil of bureaucracy." But he also expressed confidence that DOGE would eventually achieve much deeper savings.

Elon Musk Used Cocktail of Drugs During Trump Campaign and Was Using Ketamine Regularly that Affected His Bladder, Leading to His DOGE Downfall
Elon Musk was using a cocktail of drugs while on the campaign trail, as his chaotic personal life began affecting his professional activities, according to a bombshell New York Times report. Musk entered politics as President Donald Trump's firebrand ally, brought in to cut down federal bureaucracy. However, just four months into his government role, the tech billionaire now finds himself under intense scrutiny. The Tesla CEO has previously revealed that he was prescribed ketamine to deal with depression and was using it roughly once every two weeks. Insiders claim that Musk, 53, was using ketamine so frequently that it reportedly began affecting his bladder, according to the bombshell report. Drugs Spoiled Everything Ketamine, a potent anesthetic with hallucinogenic effects, was just one of many substances Musk was allegedly using. Sources also told the publication that Musk allegedly took ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms, and regularly traveled with a daily pill box containing around 20 different drugs, including Adderall. Those close to him say his drug use blurred the line between medical treatment and recreational use, with Musk allegedly having taken drugs at private events across the U.S. and at least one foreign country. The NYT based its reporting on reviewed text messages and insider interviews. Although Musk has publicly said that he takes only "a small amount" of ketamine and that he's not a fan of illegal drugs, his erratic behavior—including what appeared to be a Nazi salute at Trump's election night event—has raised doubts. It remains unclear whether Musk was under the influence when he was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a role he announced his resignation from on Wednesday. SpaceX, Elon Musk's aerospace company and a major government contractor, enforces a strict drug-free policy and conducts random drug testing for its employees. However, insiders familiar with the process told the New York Times that Musk was allegedly given advance notice of when these tests would occur. It's unclear whether the White House ever required Musk to undergo drug testing during his time in government. Complicated Personal and Professional Life Beyond the reported drug use, Musk's tenure at DOGE was also marked by personal legal conflicts involving his former partners and children. Claire Boucher, known as the musician Grimes, is reportedly in a legal dispute with Musk over his public appearances with their five-year-old son, X, which she claims violates their custody arrangement. Musk has also faced allegations of secretly fathering a 14th child with conservative influencer Ashley St. Clair—an accusation he has reportedly denied. In recent weeks, Musk had shown growing frustration over the increasing challenges he faced in his government role. Musk is stepping away from his government role, having fallen well short of his ambitious plan to cut $2 trillion in spending — with estimates indicating he only saved about one-thousandth of that amount, even after mass layoffs that affected tens of thousands. He now plans to shift focus on his companies, SpaceX and Tesla, and continue pursuing his long-term vision of establishing a human presence on Mars. As Musk leaves DOGE, Trump praised him as "terrific" and announced they would appear together at a press conference on Friday. "This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way," Trump said on his Truth Social network on Thursday.
