European Union looking forward to trade deal with India: VP, European Parliament
Brussels [Belgium], June 5 (ANI): Christel Schaldemose, the Vice-President of the European Parliament in charge of Asia, expressed optimism on Thursday about the finalisation of an impending trade deal between the EU and India.
Talking to ANI after an all-party Indian delegation met her as part of India's anti-terror outreach post Operation Sindoor, she said she was looking forward to the negotiations to finalise a trade agreement and other agreements between the EU and India.
'India is an amazing country, and we could learn a lot from them... I'm looking forward to the negotiations to finalise a trade agreement and other agreements between the EU and India,' Christel Schaldemose said.
On the meeting with the BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad-led multi-party delegation, she said, 'I was grateful to meet this important delegation from India. When a big democracy comes and tells us how we need to condemn terrorist attacks, and convey the message to our counterparts, we will, of course, listen.'
On June 2, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal expressed optimism that India could finalise its Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU) ahead of the year-end deadline, citing minimal divergences between the two economic blocs.
Minister Goyal emphasised the complementary nature of the Indian and European economies.
'There are not too many issues where we have divergence of opinion. We have both complementary economies,' he stated during his recent visit to France. 'In most cases, what is of interest to India does not hurt the European economy. And likewise, goods and services that Europe would like to provide to India only support our growth story.'
The minister acknowledged that certain sensitive areas require careful negotiation on both sides. 'Obviously, in any trading relationship, there are certain sensitive issues on both sides which we have to resolve amicably in the interest of both the European Union and India,' Goyal noted.
India has positioned itself strongly on key issues concerning the EU, particularly regarding gender equality and sustainability.
'We are proud of our sisters and our women and the fantastic work they have done and continue to do,' Goyal said. 'Therefore, if you have a subject like gender, India is on the front foot. When it comes to subjects like sustainability, India is right at the forefront.'
Once finalised, this FTA would be one of the most significant for India, as the EU is its second-largest trading partner after the US.
This commitment to finance FTA by the end of 2025 builds on the strategic direction given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during the landmark visit of the EU College of Commissioners to New Delhi in February 2025.
After a nine-year lull, India and the EU re-launched negotiations for the India-EU Free Trade Agreement in 2022. The talks had reportedly stopped in 2013. (ANI)

Nvidia, HPE to build new supercomputer in Germany
Nvidia and Hewlett Packard Enterprise said on Tuesday they are partnering with the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre to build a new supercomputer using Nvidia's next-generation chips. The Blue Lion supercomputer , as the project is called, will become available to scientists in early 2027, using Nvidia's "Vera Rubin" chips. The announcement, made at a supercomputing conference in Hamburg, Germany, follows Nvidia's announcement that the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in the United States also plans to build a system using the chips next year. Separately, Nvidia also said that Jupiter, another supercomputer using its chips at German national research institute Forschungszentrum Julich, has officially become Europe's fastest system. The deals represent European institutions aiming to stay competitive against the U.S. in supercomputers used for scientific fields from biotechnology to climate research. Long before it became an artificial intelligence powerhouse, Nvidia set out to persuade scientists to use its chips to speed up complex computer problems, such as modeling climate change. Those problems required many precise calculations that could take months at a time. Nvidia is now working to persuade scientists to use artificial intelligence. Those AI systems can take the results of a few precise calculations and use them to make predictions that, while not as accurate as the fully calculated results, can still be useful while taking far less time. Nvidia on Tuesday unveiled what it calls its "Climate in a Bottle" AI model. In a press briefing, Dion Harris, head of data center product marketing at Nvidia, said scientists will be able to input a few initial conditions such as sea surface temperatures and generate a forecast for 10 to 30 years in the future and see what the weather may be like at any kilometer or so of the earth's surface. "Researchers will use combined approach of classic physics and AI to resolve turbulent atmospheric flows," Harris said. "This technique will allow them to analyze thousands and thousands more scenarios in greater detail than ever before."

Liquor stocks like United Spirits, Sula Vineyard in focus as Maharashtra hikes excise duties
Shares of liquor companies such as United Spirits, Sula Vineyard, United Breweries, and Allied Blenders and Distillers are set to be in focus on Wednesday, after the Maharashtra government approved sweeping changes to liquor taxation and regulation aimed at boosting excise revenues. The measures are expected to add approximately Rs 14,000 crore annually to the Excise Department's revenue. Following the cabinet's decision, several liquor companies have reportedly raised prices across categories in the state. This comes as the excise duty on Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) with a declared manufacturing value of up to Rs 260 per bulk litre has been revised from three times to 4.5 times the manufacturing value. Similarly, the duty on country liquor has increased from Rs 180 to Rs 205 per proof litre. Consumers across Maharashtra will face higher prices at both retail outlets and hospitality establishments. The minimum retail price for a 180 ml bottle of country liquor has increased to Rs 80 from Rs 70. Indian-made foreign liquor has gone up to Rs 205 from Rs 110–115, while premium foreign liquor now starts at Rs 360, up from Rs 210. A new category, Maharashtra-made liquor, has been introduced, with a minimum price of Rs 148 for a 180ml cabinet also approved the creation of a new liquor category called Maharashtra-made liquor, which will be grain-based and produced exclusively by Maharashtra-based manufacturers. Producers will need to register new brands under this classification. ADVERTISEMENT In parallel, licensing costs for businesses operating in the liquor trade have been revised upward. Sealed foreign liquor retail licences (FL-2) will now incur an additional 15% fee, while hotel and restaurant licences (FL-3) will be subject to a 10% enhance regulatory oversight, the government has established a new divisional office in Mumbai, along with six new superintendent offices across key districts — Mumbai suburbs, Thane, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, and Ahilyanagar. The organisational revamp includes the creation of 1,223 new posts, comprising 744 fresh positions and 479 supervisory roles. ADVERTISEMENT An integrated control room will also be set up, equipped with an AI-based system to monitor liquor manufacturing, distilleries, and wholesale activity across the state. The move stems from recommendations submitted by a secretary-level study group that reviewed policies and best practices from other states.
