Abu Dhabi introduces gene-editing therapy for sickle cell disease for first time in UAE
The Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DoH), the regulator of the healthcare sector in the emirate, has announced the introduction of CASGEVY, the first CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing therapy in the UAE.
This achievement opens new horizons and offers innovative treatment for patients suffering from sickle cell disease (SCD) and transfusion dependent beta-thalassemia (TDT), positioning Abu Dhabi as a leading destination for life sciences and is a significant achievement in the field of innovation and gene therapies.
The innovative treatment, provided by Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC), in coordination with DoH and in collaboration with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, a leading biotechnology company. The first patient is scheduled to begin the groundbreaking therapy at Yas Clinic Hospital in April of this year.
CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing is an innovative technology that enables precise genome editing to treat certain genetic diseases by targeting and altering specific DNA sequences.
CASGEVY is a one-time treatment tailored for each patient by extracting stem cells from the patient's bone marrow, genetically editing them in the lab, and then re-implanting them into the patient's body to provide long-term positive effects.
In line with DoH's commitment to fostering innovation and ensuring the health and safety of patients in the emirate, the department has established regulations and guidelines for the management of gene therapies, according to the highest international standards.
The treatment has been included in insurance coverage in accordance with established regulations and standards.
Dr Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the DoH, said: "The Department of Health - Abu Dhabi remains dedicated to safeguarding the health and well-being of our community while continuously enhancing the quality of care. Our goal is to establish the world's most efficient healthcare system through the adoption of the latest innovations and promising technologies.
'By harnessing genomic sciences, we aim to develop cutting-edge therapeutic solutions to complex health challenges, solidifying Abu Dhabi's position as a global leader in healthcare, life sciences, and innovation."
Dr Maysoon Al Karam, Chief Medical Officer at ADSCC and Yas Clinic, said: "Partnerships with leading biotechnology companies such as Vertex Pharmaceuticals represent a significant milestone in ADSCC's global mission, aligning with the UAE's vision and strategic health priorities. Patients with genetic disorders such as thalassemia and sickle cell disease will greatly benefit from this revolutionary treatment, which we aim to offer as one of the first advanced gene therapies in the country.
'As the UAE's leading cellular research institution and the UAE's first FACT-accredited centre, we strive through such partnerships to drive medical innovation, developing treatments for a range of critical diseases, and reinforcing Abu Dhabi's position as a global hub for life sciences, in line with the UAE's leadership vision.'

UAE: New unified card for people of determination to grant easier access to services
Starting January 2026, people of determination (PoD) in Abu Dhabi will benefit from a new unified card that will grant them access to a wider range of services at both federal and local levels, Abu Dhabi Media Office announced on June 9. The new card is part of a larger collaboration between the Ministry of Family and the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination. Through this joint initiative, the goal is to build a more inclusive, streamlined system that better serves the needs of PoD across the emirate. Under this collaboration, both entities will work together to align legislation and regulations, standardise diagnostic and assessment procedures, and begin accepting card applications through the Zayed Higher Organization for Abu Dhabi residents. They also plan to launch joint training programmes and share expertise to improve the skills of professionals working in this sector. In addition, they also plan a full implementation of the Unified National Disability Classification. Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. In addition to streamlining access to services, the partnership will focus on protecting the rights of PoD, improving communication channels, and participating in local and international events. Both entities also aim to develop smarter systems — like integrated data platforms and mobile apps — to ensure better service delivery. Plans are also underway to upgrade care and rehabilitation centres, develop more inclusive educational curricula, and launch awareness campaigns to promote greater societal understanding. Employment stability and professional empowerment for people of determination are also key priorities under the agreement. 'We see People of Determination as a cornerstone of our social fabric, fully entitled to their rights and eager to contribute meaningfully to their country's development. This collaboration with Zayed Higher Organization is an extension of the UAE's approach, which has turned inclusive support from a slogan into a living reality," said Hessa Abdulrahman Tahlak, assistant undersecretary for the Development Sector at the Ministry of Family. "We are not merely providing services, we are building a humane and social system where difference becomes a driver for excellence and challenges a gateway to opportunities," she added. Abdullah Al Humaidan, Secretary-General of the Zayed Higher Organisation, echoed this sentiment, calling the collaboration a strategic move toward delivering unified, efficient, and inclusive services. He also highlighted the adoption of technology and digital integration to raise service efficiency and ensure full inclusion of PoD. 'We believe that creating an inclusive environment for People of Determination starts with effective institutional cooperation', Al Humaidan said.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi performs UAE's first robotic cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC
ABU DHABI - Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has successfully performed the UAE's first robotic cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) to treat a rare appendiceal tumour, in a medical milestone that reinforces Abu Dhabi's position as a global destination for innovative healthcare. The complex procedure, performed on a 48-year-old patient, involved the removal of multiple internal organs to prevent the spread of the tumour in her abdomen. This groundbreaking procedure was led by Dr. Yasir Akmal, Staff Physician in the Digestive Disease Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and an American Fellowship-trained surgical oncologist, and a multi-disciplinary team. Appendiceal tumours account for less than 1 percent of malignancies worldwide and are found in approximately 1.4 percent of patients who undergo an appendectomy. The patient initially presented symptoms resembling appendicitis, leading to the removal of her appendix. However, during the procedure, her surgeon discovered gelatinous deposits, a jelly-like substance, in the abdominal cavity. A subsequent pathology report confirmed the presence of a rare low-grade mucinous neoplasm, a tumour that, if untreated, could spread throughout the abdomen and result in a condition known as pseudomyxoma peritonei or 'jelly belly." Dr. Georges-Pascal Haber, Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said, 'We are pushing the boundaries of robotic surgery and are proud to have used such an advanced technology for a complex procedure like Paola's. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is a leader in surgical innovation, continuously refining minimally invasive techniques to improve outcomes and enhance quality of life.' Following the tumour removal, HIPEC treatment (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) was administered— a technique where heated chemotherapy (42 degrees Celsius) is circulated within the abdominal cavity for 90 minutes to eliminate any residual cancer cells. Highlighting both the preventive and curative nature of the surgery, Dr. Akmal said that the patient's condition was diagnosed at an advanced but treatable stage, and thanks to the timely intervention of the multidisciplinary team, supported by specialised AI-driven diagnostic tools, the team was able to navigate the process of eliminating the cancer cells in her body with precision.
