Miley Cyrus reflects on the 2018 fire that destroyed her $2.52m Malibu home
Miley Cyrus is revisiting the moment her life — and home — went up in flames. Years on, and stronger, she has a glass-half-full perspective on the tragedy.
During a recent Q&A at her 'Something Beautiful' event in New York, the pop singer described the destruction of her Malibu compound in the 2018 Woolsey Fire as a turning point.
The $2.52 million property, which included a four-bedroom residence and her personal recording studio, Rainbowland, was reduced to ash just weeks before she married Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth.
'When my house burned down, that was the biggest blessing I've ever had in my life, actually,' Cyrus said, according to People.
'Losing everything and being able to rebuild, and to be able to be purposeful and choose every piece that I'm gonna collect — or also just about the people in my life.'
The 2-acre estate wasn't just a home. It was the birthplace of her recording career, where Cyrus, then a teen, laid down tracks for her first album in 2005.
But the fire brought more than physical loss.
'A lot of my relationships also burned down,' she said. 'That again just led me to such magic and to have so much gratitude.'
Cyrus and Hemsworth had spent nearly a decade in an on-and-off relationship before marrying in December 2018. By August 2019, they had separated, and their divorce was finalised in early 2020.
At the time of the fire, Cyrus was filming Netflix's popular 'Black Mirror' in South Africa.
She recalled receiving the news while strapped to a gurney, in costume for her character Ashley O.
'Actually as my house was burning down I was strapped to a gurney with my hands locked in handcuffs strapped to a bed,' she shared on TikTok in 2023.
The following day, she was on set again filming a dance-heavy music video. 'The show must go on,' she said.
Looking back, she said she would have told her younger self to embrace the difficult times.
'They are only leading you into the light.'
Cyrus, who stepped back from touring in 2023, is now preparing to release her ninth studio album, 'Something Beautiful,' on May 30.
The project will be accompanied by a visual film premiering June 6 at the Tribeca Film Festival. One of the album's eight producers is Maxx Morando, drummer for the band Lilly, whom Cyrus began dating in 2021.
'This album has to start with me loving it,' she said. 'Whether you know it or not, it's gonna be coming through the speakers when you're listening.'
Hemsworth, 35, has since entered a quieter chapter.
He began dating Australian model Gabriella Brooks in late 2019, though the couple didn't appear publicly together until the following year.
Brooks made her runway debut at Australia Fashion Week in 2023. Cue fashion brand director Kate Bielenberg called her 'such a great girl' and praised her as the embodiment of 'cool girl vibes.'

How Justin Baldoni feels after $600m countersuit against Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds dismissed
Justin Baldoni's team remains confident despite a judge dismissing the actor's $400 million countersuit against his It Ends With Us co-star Blake Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds. 'Ms. Lively and her team's predictable declaration of victory is false, so let us be clear about the latest ruling,' the actor's lawyer, Bryan Freedman, told Page Six in a statement on Tuesday. 'While the Court dismissed the defamation related claims, the Court has invited us to amend four out of the seven claims against Ms. Lively, which will showcase additional evidence and refined allegations,' he continued. 'This case is about false accusations of sexual harassment and retaliation and a non-existent smear campaign, which Ms. Lively's own team conveniently describes as 'untraceable' because they cannot prove what never happened.' Freedman also claimed that Lively's allegations are 'no truer today than they were yesterday.' 'And with the facts on our side, we march forward with the same confidence that we had when Ms. Lively and her cohorts initiated this battle and look forward to her forthcoming deposition, which I will be taking,' he said. 'We are grateful for the organic show of support from the public and for the dedication of the internet sleuth community who continue to cover the case with discernment and integrity.' A Baldoni insider echoed Freedman's optimism, telling the Daily Mail on Monday, 'Even though it is a stumble, Justin still has full trust with his legal team. 'He is looking to figure out how to move forward from this current setback,' the source continued. While he feels confident that his lawyers will pull through, the Jane the Virgin alum, 41, sees things as 'a tale of two worlds right now.' 'Justin feels this is a huge kick to the guts,' the source admitted. On Monday, Judge Lewis J. Liman granted the motion to dismiss the actor's January countersuit, along with his $250 million (A$380 million) libel lawsuit against the New York Times, according to documents obtained by Page Six. The judge wrote that Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios, 'have not alleged that Lively is responsible for any statements other than the statements in her [California Civil Rights Department] complaint, which are privileged.' Liman said that Baldoni's complaint 'alleged that Reynolds and [publicist Leslie] Sloane made additional statements accusing Baldoni of sexual misconduct and that the 'Times' made additional statements accusing the Wayfarer Parties of engaging in a smear campaign.' 'The Wayfarer Parties have not alleged that Reynolds, Sloane or the 'Times' would have seriously doubted these statements were true based on the information available to them, as is required for them to be liable for defamation under applicable law,' he continued. Baldoni's lawyers have until June 23 to amend their claims for breach of implied covenant. Lively's legal team, Esra Hudson & Mike Gottlieb, called the move a 'total victory and a complete vindication' in a statement to Page Six. 'As we have said from day one, this '$400 million' (A$600 million) lawsuit was a sham, and the Court saw right through it,' the statement said. The Gossip Girl alum, 37, was seen celebrating the news at the Chanel Tribeca Festival Artists Dinner in New York City on Monday night. In August 2024, feud rumours swirled for Baldoni and Lively after their project, a film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's book of the same name, premiered in New York City. Lively went on to sue the movie's director for sexual harassment, retaliation, breach of contract, infliction of emotional distress, invasion of privacy and lost wages three months later. Baldoni denied any wrongdoing and hit back with his $400 million countersuit, accusing Lively and Reynolds of defamation, as well as a lawsuit accusing the New York Times (the first outlet to report on the actress' lawsuit) of libel. He has also accused Lively of bulldozing him throughout the movie project and taking over his directorial duties.

Miley Cyrus details damaging effect raunchy image had on her personal life
Miley Cyrus' raunchy image caused her relationships to "fall apart". The 32-year-old singer recalled how she had a "hard time" in 2013 after causing controversy with her naked appearance in her 'Wrecking Ball' video and twerking on stage with Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards, and she found it hard to date because potential partners didn't like her sharing her "sexual expression" with the world. Miley - whose engagement to Liam Hemsworth ended that year before they reconciled three years later - said on the Wondery podcast Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky: "I lost everything during that time in my personal life because of the choices I was making professionally. "If I kept dressing or acting a certain way, my relationships fell apart. No one wanted to date me because they didn't want to be with a woman [whose] sexual expression part was not for them. It was like shared with the world. "So, like, guys, when I would try to date, when I was dating, or who I was engaged to at the time, that didn't work out because I was sharing a part of myself that men wanted to be saved for them only." And Miley - who has siblings Brandi, 38, Trace, 36, Christopher, 33, Braison, 31, and 25-year-old Noah - admitted her siblings felt "humiliated" by her public persona. She said: "That was the time where I just got hit so hard and I was so embarrassed. "There was even a time where my brother and sister didn't want to go to school because of how humiliated they were to be related to me. "I remember my brother at one point he was saying, 'I don't judge you, but you could understand how hard it is for me to go to school, and you be my sister.' I was a hard sibling to have as a little girl, so I was like 'All right we're even.' " The 'Flowers' hitmaker also found it hard to "go home and see my dad and like look him in the eyes and not feel super embarrassed." Miley recently hit out at the criticism she received over that time period. Asked what she sees when she looks back on that period, she told the New York Times newspaper: "I see adults not acting like it. I would never look at someone that's 18, 19, 20, 21 years old and judge them as an adult, because they're not yet. "At one point, there was even a petition. It was like 'Millions of Moms Against Miley' or something. "Isn't that crazy, this petition? In 2013, maybe that performance felt really shocking, but when you watch it back, it really wasn't that wild. I was dressed as a teddy bear."

Blake Lively issues statement after ‘defeat' of Justin Baldoni defamation lawsuit
In December, the actress sued co-star Baldoni for alleged sexual harassment on the set of the drama It Ends with Us, which he also directed. Lively also claimed the 41-year-old orchestrated a smear campaign against her around the film's release in August 2024. Baldoni, who has denied the allegations, filed a countersuit for alleged defamation and civil extortion against Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, and others. But on Monday, Judge Lewis J. Liman granted motions to dismiss the $400 million (£295 million) defamation lawsuit against Lively…
