Portugal win Nations League with penalty win against Spain

Talk of the first meeting between 40-year-old Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo and 17-year-old Spain winger Lamine Yamal dominated the build-up to the Allianz Arena showdown.
Ronaldo's 61st-minute equaliser forced extra time but both players had been substituted by the time an absorbing contest was decided from 12 yards.
Mikel Oyarzabal had earlier given Spain a half-time lead after the opening goal from his Real Sociedad team-mate Martin Zubimendi was cancelled out by impressive Portugal full-back Nuno Mendes.
Portugal celebrated a second Nations League triumph, having won the inaugural tournament in 2019, with Ronaldo pictured in tears following the shootout.
Goals seemed extremely likely in Bavaria, with Euro 2024 winners Spain having reached the final with a thrilling 5-4 win over France, while Portugal came from behind to beat Germany 2-1.
Pedri and Nico Williams each threatened before Luis de la Fuente's side capitalised on their early ascendancy with a scrappy 21st-minute opener.
Oyarzabal sparked the attack with a delightful flick in midfield and, after Portugal goalkeeper Costa and defenders Ruben Dias and Joao Neves made a mess of dealing with Yamal's delivery into the box, Zubimendi was on hand for a simple finish into the unguarded net.
Portugal trailed for just four minutes.
Marauding left-back Mendes – fresh from his Champions League triumph with Paris St Germain – claimed the leveller, bursting into the box beyond Oscar Mingueza to blast an angled drive into the bottom right corner for his first international goal.
Martinez's side enjoyed increased possession and were largely subduing Spain before falling behind again in the final minute of the half.
With Portuguese players appealing for a foul on Bernardo Silva by Robin Le Normand, Pedri drove forward and poked the ball through for Oyarzabal – who scored the winner in last summer's European Championship final against England – to divert an instinctive, first-time finish past Costa.
Bruno Fernandes briefly thought he had levelled four minutes into the second period but Pedro Neto was offside before providing the assist.
A second equaliser of the evening eventually arrived with 29 minutes to go.
Mendes breezed past Yamal on Portugal's left and, after his low cross looped up off Le Normand, Ronaldo held off Marc Cucurella to volley home his 138th goal for his country.
With the clock ticking towards an additional half an hour, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner limped off two minutes from time to be replaced by Goncalo Ramos.
Portugal substitute Nelson Semedo scuffed wide early in extra time, while tempers threatened to boil over during a brief flashpoint after Mendes went down in Spain's box under a challenge from Alex Baena.
Yamal was withdrawn ahead of a cagey second period of extra time before Portugal held their nerve to prevail on spot-kicks, with Spain substitute Morata the only man to miss.
Earlier, Kylian Mbappe scored his 50th goal for France to help them claim third place with a 2-0 victory over Germany in Stuttgart.
Germany spurned several chances to take the lead, most notably when Florian Wirtz saw his effort come back off the goal frame, before Mbappe struck on the stroke of half-time to put France ahead.
Mbappe is now just one goal off Thierry Henry as France's second all-time leading goalscorer, and the Real Madrid forward then teed up substitute Michael Olise late on to secure a win for the visitors.
Goalkeeper Mike Maignan was just as important for France, who lost a nine-goal semi-final thriller to Spain on Thursday, in this third-placed play-off as he made several important saves throughout.

Casemiro claims season has been 'successful' despite Man Utd misery

Even though Manchester United achieved their lowest finish in Premier League history, midfielder Casemiro stated that the 2024/25 season has been one of the "most successful" of his career to date Casemiro has surprisingly deemed this season one of his "most successful" after earning the trust of Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, despite a challenging period for the team. The Brazilian midfielder appeared to be on his way out of Old Trafford in January, after talks of a move to Saudi Arabia were bandied about last summer and re-emerged during the winter window. Yet when the dust settled, Casemiro remained with United. After initially falling out of Portuguese coach Amorim's favour, by around February he began to carve out more regular playing time in the Premier League and European competitions. ‌ The 33-year-old became integral to the squad that battled its way to the Europa League final, noticing an uptick in appearances as the season drew to a close. ‌ Casemiro, while on duty with the Brazil national team, has now shed light on discussions held with Amorim earlier in his tenure, boldly stating that, for him, personally, it was indeed a successful year. "This year has been one of the most important years of my career, if not the most. Even because of the coach's choice [Ruben Amorim]. I was left out [of the options], but I never stopped working," Casemiro revealed. "That's my great success. Everyone wants to talk about titles, victories and big games, but when you don't play and you manage to change the mind of a coach who arrives and doesn't play you. "You end up coming back, and now you're being praised by the coach who at first practically didn't count on you... it was one of my most successful years. "These are things that end up happening internally. I'm one of those people who, when things happen internally, I don't like to say too much." ‌ Despite United's struggles, Casemiro donned the Red Devils' kit 42 times this term, netting five times and contributing three assists. His personal comeback stands in stark contrast to United's disappointing campaign, which saw them lumber to their lowest Premier League ranking in history, finishing 15th, and suffering 14 defeats, a figure not seen since 1990. The Brazilian midfielder faced severe criticism in September following a harrowing first-half display against Liverpool, where his error led to Luis Diaz opening the scoring after just 35 minutes. Not long after, Casemiro lost possession again, allowing Diaz to score once more before Erik ten Hag subbed him off at the break, with United eventual 3-0 losers. ‌ Casemiro shed light on his discussions with his manager during challenging times, stating (via the Manchester Evening News): "I don't think there's been such a big relapse in my individual aspect, but when the club isn't playing well, changes are needed. "I spoke to him [Amorim] and he told me that it was more a question of choosing to play, that I should wait for the opportunity. Of course, he was open with me. "He said it was his choice, nothing against me. I had no choice but to carry on working and wait for the opportunity. When I played, I lived up to what he asked." Arsenal were set to sign midfielder before transfer snub and Real Madrid hijack

Real Madrid star Federico Valverde was close to clinching a move to Arsenal as a teenager but admitted he declined the transfer before the Spanish giants secured his signature Federico Valverde previously revealed he came close to signing for Arsenal, but backed out due to feeling uncomfortable during a short stint in England. The Real Madrid talisman had gone on trial with the Premier League side in 2016 while he was in the youth academy of his boyhood club Penarol in his home country of Uruguay. Despite the interest shown in him by the north London side, Valverde opted to turn down a move to England and instead chose the Spanish giants, where he's been ever since. ‌ Valverde's decision was certainly a fruitful one considering he's been a major part in the 14 trophies he's won at the club since 2017, including two Champions League titles and three La Liga trophies. ‌ It was in 2023 when the 26-year-old opened up about rejecting Arsenal and explained the various reasons behind his decision. "If you Google me, you will see stories about how I almost went to Arsenal when I was 16. That's maybe half-true," he wrote in his column for The Players' Tribune. "It's nothing against Arsenal, but I never wanted to go to England. At that time, the business side of football took over. Certain people were telling me, 'Who wouldn't want to go play for Arsenal? You want to stay here in Uruguay? That's crazy!' What they were really saying under their breath was, 'We can all make a lot of money if you go.' "You realise that your life is not your own in football. Especially at a young age, you feel more like a hostage. Even your family becomes a hostage. Football is an escape to a better life, especially for us in South America, and the vultures know that." Valverde cited the impossibility of his family coming to live with him and having to navigate a foreign country without knowing the language as reasons behind turning down the move. "They put the pressure on you in a 'nice' way," he added. "'Damn, Fede, if you go to Arsenal, you'll have a nice bed and a shower that stays warm for 30, 40 minutes! Who wouldn't want that life?' They sent me on trial to London for a week, and I just wasn't comfortable. ‌ "If you only think of material things, it sounds great. But we are not robots. The reality was that my family couldn't come to London with me. I'd have to live alone, not speaking the language, at 16-years-old. For every one kid who succeeds in moving overseas, you don't see the 100 who fail." Valverde will find himself playing alongside new team-mates in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen this season while reports suggest his club were intent on hijacking Arsenal's deal to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. ‌ Mikel Arteta's side have long been regarded as favourites to sign the Spain international who rejected a move to Liverpool last summer. According to Spanish outlet AS, Madrid had planned a "final attack" to convince the midfielder to remain in Spain. Despite the reports, The Athletic have insisted Arsenal expect Zubimendi to be present for pre-season training, with the club regarding the deal for the 26-year-old as complete.

Kieran Tierney has one nagging Celtic issue to overcome as he's tipped to regain hometown hero status

Hoops fans are thrilled to welcome back one of their favourites in a blockbuster signing and Paul Dickov shares his summer hope Kieran Tierney has been backed to be a Celtic hero second time around at the club – if the fans favourite can shake of his injury issues. The Hoops ace has confirmed his return to Parkhead on a bumper five year deal to rejoin with former boss Brendan Rodgers. ‌ Tierney departed on a £25m deal to Arsenal in 2020 – but has come back on a free in a blockbuster move from the champions. ‌ Former Gunners and Scotland striker Paul Dickov reckons it's a huge move for the Hoops and the full back as the 28-year-old will be determined to pick up where he left off. But there are some question marks around Tierney's fitness in recent seasons with a success of injuries hampering his game time. The Scotland star made just 23 appearances for Arsenal last season after getting crocked at Euro 2024 and his time in London was hindered by several issues. Scotland cap Dickov – who had two stints at Manchester City after starting out with the Gunners – is hoping Tierney can get the benefit of a pre-season at Celtic and come roaring back – as Hoops fans are thrilled to have one of their favourite sons back on board. Dickov, speaking to said: 'I think it's a good move for Kieran. His injuries have been horrendous in his time at Arsenal. I think it speaks volumes given the reception he got from Arsenal when he's appeared. ‌ 'He's a big hero up at Celtic. They'll be looking forward to him coming back. And from Kieran's point of view, it's imperative that he keeps fit. He's been so unlucky. 'Every time it looks like he's coming back from an injury and getting a bit of form, something happens and he's out again. "So from Kieran's point of view, I hope he has a good summer, gets a really good pre-season under his belt, and if he stays fit next season, he'll be a huge asset for Celtic once again.'
