Portugal win Nations League with penalty win against Spain
Talk of the first meeting between 40-year-old Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo and 17-year-old Spain winger Lamine Yamal dominated the build-up to the Allianz Arena showdown.
Ronaldo's 61st-minute equaliser forced extra time but both players had been substituted by the time an absorbing contest was decided from 12 yards.
Mikel Oyarzabal had earlier given Spain a half-time lead after the opening goal from his Real Sociedad team-mate Martin Zubimendi was cancelled out by impressive Portugal full-back Nuno Mendes.
Portugal celebrated a second Nations League triumph, having won the inaugural tournament in 2019, with Ronaldo pictured in tears following the shootout.
Goals seemed extremely likely in Bavaria, with Euro 2024 winners Spain having reached the final with a thrilling 5-4 win over France, while Portugal came from behind to beat Germany 2-1.
Pedri and Nico Williams each threatened before Luis de la Fuente's side capitalised on their early ascendancy with a scrappy 21st-minute opener.
Oyarzabal sparked the attack with a delightful flick in midfield and, after Portugal goalkeeper Costa and defenders Ruben Dias and Joao Neves made a mess of dealing with Yamal's delivery into the box, Zubimendi was on hand for a simple finish into the unguarded net.
Portugal trailed for just four minutes.
Marauding left-back Mendes – fresh from his Champions League triumph with Paris St Germain – claimed the leveller, bursting into the box beyond Oscar Mingueza to blast an angled drive into the bottom right corner for his first international goal.
Martinez's side enjoyed increased possession and were largely subduing Spain before falling behind again in the final minute of the half.
With Portuguese players appealing for a foul on Bernardo Silva by Robin Le Normand, Pedri drove forward and poked the ball through for Oyarzabal – who scored the winner in last summer's European Championship final against England – to divert an instinctive, first-time finish past Costa.
Bruno Fernandes briefly thought he had levelled four minutes into the second period but Pedro Neto was offside before providing the assist.
A second equaliser of the evening eventually arrived with 29 minutes to go.
Mendes breezed past Yamal on Portugal's left and, after his low cross looped up off Le Normand, Ronaldo held off Marc Cucurella to volley home his 138th goal for his country.
With the clock ticking towards an additional half an hour, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner limped off two minutes from time to be replaced by Goncalo Ramos.
Portugal substitute Nelson Semedo scuffed wide early in extra time, while tempers threatened to boil over during a brief flashpoint after Mendes went down in Spain's box under a challenge from Alex Baena.
Yamal was withdrawn ahead of a cagey second period of extra time before Portugal held their nerve to prevail on spot-kicks, with Spain substitute Morata the only man to miss.
Earlier, Kylian Mbappe scored his 50th goal for France to help them claim third place with a 2-0 victory over Germany in Stuttgart.
Germany spurned several chances to take the lead, most notably when Florian Wirtz saw his effort come back off the goal frame, before Mbappe struck on the stroke of half-time to put France ahead.
Mbappe is now just one goal off Thierry Henry as France's second all-time leading goalscorer, and the Real Madrid forward then teed up substitute Michael Olise late on to secure a win for the visitors.
Goalkeeper Mike Maignan was just as important for France, who lost a nine-goal semi-final thriller to Spain on Thursday, in this third-placed play-off as he made several important saves throughout.

Thomas Partey drops major hint about Arsenal future with midfielder's contract set to expire and Mikel Arteta's side nearing a move for £51m Martin Zubimendi
Thomas Partey has issued a clear update on his Arsenal future amid ongoing speculation that he will leave the Emirates. The Ghanaian has been at Arsenal since 2020 and played an integral role in Mikel Arteta 's side last season. Both Arteta and the midfielder are keen to extend his stay but his contract expires at the end of the month and he is yet to renew his deal. Arsenal look set to secure a £51million deal for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi, who is being touted as a replacement for Partey. While Arsenal announced their released list last week, Partey was among three players who they said were still having deals negotiated. And the 31-year-old has revealed that his family will be the decisive factor when making a decision on his future. Asked if Arsenal's Zubimendi interest was impacting his decision, he told 3Sports: 'I think the first thing is where are you happy and where do you feel at home. At the end of the day you've been in football, you've been in different teams. 'Then it's about what is your next objective what do you want to achieve next. You still have to look at all this and at the end of the day we all have a family that needs money, this is our mind. 'We are not getting younger. There are a lot of things where you have to look now with a family, where you want them to be happy. When you are young you just play anywhere. 'I'm an Arsenal fan, I can't decide anything and just have to leave it to my agent and the club. Me, I just want to enjoy football.' Partey played in all but three of Arsenal's Premier League fixtures last season, scoring four goals and claiming two assists, as they came second for the third consecutive campaign. Asked if last season represented the best form of his career, he said: 'I think they will say about the availability because I was available throughout the whole season so of course they will say that.' 'Every moment, every year or every time in training there I feel I've been in my best because I can't count how many games I was not giving all my best. 'Sometimes it may go bad but every game I go all out and try to give my best. I feel happy in me, every year injury or no injury which is part of it I have given my best.' Since joining Arsenal for £50m, Partey has made 130 league appearances, scoring nine goals. Last week Arsenal released 20 players including Jorginho, Raheem Sterling and Kieran Tierney.

Thomas Frank's dream Tottenham XI with Man Utd's top target leading 3 signings
Thomas Frank could see some new signings at Totteham when he is appointed Spurs' successor to Ange Postecoglou, including a Brentford star and another Manchester United target Tottenham are on course to have a deal wrapped up for Brentford's Thomas Frank. The Danish coach is set to be the man to succeed Europa League-winning boss Ange Postcoglou in north London but the changes aren't likely to stop there. Frank is a coach rather than a manger and will be tasked with improving the squad at his disposal. But after the Lilywhites finished in 17th position, the 51-year-old will rarely have a stronger position to negotiate from over what he requires in the transfer market. There will be key decisions to make over a number of players with the future of captain Son Heung-min a hot topic. But Tottenham technical director Johan Lange will be the figure heading up much of the recruitment, possibly alongside a returning Fabio Paratici. With a return to Champions League football to manage in addition to the battles of the Premier League, the pressure will be on Frank to deliver on both fronts. And perhaps a new player or two can help boost Spurs' numbers and quality ahead of a better season. Mirror Football takes a look at how Spurs could line up under Frank next term. Guglielmo Vicario is set to remain the club's No.1 with the likes of January signing Antonin Kinsky to provide back-up. Goalkeepers Fraser Forster, 37, and Alfie Whiteman, 26, are both set to be released at the expiry of their contracts. The Spurs backline will see Kevin Danso make his loan move permanent this summer after arriving amidst the club's injury nightmare midway through the season. Already there is some competition with talented stars such as Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Radu Dragusin at Frank's disposal. With Dragusin still recovering from an ACL injury and Romero being linked to a possible exit for Atletico Madrid, perhaps there is room for another however. Spurs have already been linked to Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite, AS Roma defender Evan Ndicka and Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi. If Spurs can take advantage of Guehi entering the final year of his contract with the Eagles, perhaps he his most likely to slip into a backline including Pedro Porro, Van de Ven and Destiny Udogie. In midfield Frank will have talented youngsters to choose from in Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr, while only one of older options Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur is likely to extend their stay via a new contract. The latter could help provide a base alongside Sarr if Spurs plan to stick with the players they have. Adam Wharton and Eberechi Eze have both drawn interest from Tottenham but could prove difficult to prise away from Selhurst Park ahead of Oliver Glasner's side heading into Europe and being notoriously tough negotiators. With James Maddison already in the squad, Frank has an option to play in an advanced role and Dejan Kulusevski could also thrive in such a position. Across Spurs' frontline a familiar face could arrive in the form of Bryan Mbeumo to provide plenty of goalscoring threat from the right side. Frank is said to have asked for the Cameroon international to follow him from Brentford. On the opposite flank could be Son Heung-min but after securing his place as a Spurs legend by virtue of finally winning a trophy, he could find new competition. Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo is of interest to Tottenham and would appear to fit in with Frank's philosophies. Up front, Dominic Solanke is the obvious option to lead the frontline. Son could provide some support in that position throughout the season, in addition to Richarlison but Solanke will be handed the responsibility. Dream Tottenham XI: Vicario; Porro, Guehi, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Sarr; Mbeumo, Kulusevski, Semenyo; Solanke.

'I would love that' - Liverpool urged to hijack £60m Manchester United transfer
Emile Heskey wants Liverpool to hijack a Manchester United transfer deal as the Reds look to bolster Arne Slot's squad this summer. Liverpool have already signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and are closing in on a huge deal for his former teammate Florian Wirtz. The Anfield club are also pushing to sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and want to sign another attacker to strengthen Slot's attacking firepower. Liverpool won the Premier League by ten points last season but know reinforcements are needed ahead of their title defence with Manchester City expected to come back stronger and Arsenal well-placed for another title tilt. At the other end of the table, Manchester United made Matheus Cunha their first summer signing and are now working on a deal for Bryan Mbeumo. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. Mbeumo has verbally agreed a move to Old Trafford but United are yet to meet Brentford's £60m valuation for a player who scored 20 Premier League goals last season. The Cameroon international was linked with Tottenham and Newcastle United before Manchester United emerged as the frontrunners to secure his signature. But Heskey wishes Mbeumo was heading for his former club Liverpool, insisting he would have been a perfect addition to Slot's squad. 'It's hard to ever say Liverpool make mistakes in the market, because their strategy is usually just so solid,' the former England striker told Prime Casino. 'I would have loved to have seen Bryan Mbeumo at Anfield with Liverpool though. He's got loads going for him. Manchester United In: Matheus Cunha Out: Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof Liverpool In: Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi Out: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher 'He was someone that is tried and tested in the Premier League for a few years as well. His work rate's astounding. He knows where the goal is. He's very, very technical and understands the way that Liverpool would want to play. 'So it was interesting to see that they never really went in for him.' Mbeumo looks set to join a Manchester United team that finished just 15th in the Premier League last season and will not be involved in any European competition next year. Asked how United were able to attract Mbeumo and Cunha despite their dismal 2024-25 campaign, Heskey added: 'The thing is with United is that they still have the pull to attract players. 'Normally, Mbeumo would be wanting Champions League football, knowing what the club are going to do. 'Even now, without Europe, in a transitional phase, United can still get hold of players like him and Matheus Cunha. More Trending 'It's a bit like when I chose Liverpool, who weren't yet at their best. I always supported Liverpool, but I always wanted to be in on the ground floor on their comeback. 'I understood the assignment, and I saw where things were going if they went well. 'Mbeumo probably feels the same. He can be part of something that can be great again. 'Let's be honest, it's Liverpool and Manchester United when you're abroad. They're the only two clubs who matter to the rest of the world.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
