Film Independent, the organization that puts on the Independent Spirit Awards, announced that the 41st edition of the award show honoring the best of indie film will take place on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2026. The organization also announced a new venue for the show, the Hollywood Palladium. The show usually takes place in a big tent on the Santa Monica beach, but the area is undergoing renovations in preparation for the 2028 Olympics.
Television superproducer David E. Kelley will receive the inaugural Showrunner Award at the ATX TV Festival, honoring his singular impact on the medium. The award presentation will include a screening of the first episode of his Apple TV+ series Presumed Innocent, followed by a conversation with Kelley about the series (which has been renewed for a second season), as well as a retrospective look into the many influential series that he has helmed over the course of his career, including The Practice, Ally McBeal, Big Little Lies, and more.
Indie powerhouse Mubi has found its next The Substance in Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. The company will distribute writer-director Jane Schoenbrun's (I Saw the TV Glow) horror movie Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, with Plan B producing. Hannah Einbinder (Hacks) and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) will star. The film is described as "an insane yet cozy midnight odyssey that beckons to unsuspecting viewers from the horror section at the local video store" about a director who becomes obsessed with casting the "final girl" for a horror movie.
Golden Globe nominee Joel Edgerton (Loving) and Academy Award nominee Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense) will star in black comic thriller Fangs alongside writer-director Lucy McKendrick, who is making her directorial debut. McKendrick will play Teddy (McKendrick), the daughter of a private prison mogul, who becomes obsessed with a charismatic inmate who goes by Fangs (Edgerton). "Consumed with desire for the self-proclaimed 'psychopath,' Teddy risks everything as her life spirals spectacularly out of control," per the official description.
Ted, Seth MacFarlane's dirty talking teddy bear franchise, is expanding again, with an animated sequel series set up at Peacock. (Peacock also has a live-action prequel series, which has been renewed for a second season.) MacFarlane, , , and Jessica Barth will reprise their movie roles for the series, which is set after the events of Ted 2, with Kyle Mooney and Liz Richman joining.
Carrie Coon (The White Lotus) and Lily James (Pam and Tommy) are set to star alongside previously announced (The Last of Us) and (The Order) in cult thriller Harmonia. The film is directed by Best Live-Action Short Film Oscar nominee Guy Nattiv (Skin) and based on his grandmother's own experience with a cult. Coon will play a troubled woman who meets a charismatic spiritual leader (James) who runs an all-female commune called Harmonia and abandons her life to join it. Ramsey and Young play her daughters, who go to rescue their mother and find themselves caught up in the cult.
Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) will star in "inspirational thriller" The Old Man in the Dunes for faith-based producer Angel Studios (The Sound of Freedom, King of Kings). The film tells the story of "an enigmatic old man living in the dunes who is unjustly accused of killing a local. His only hope is a steadfast public defender determined to unearth the truth." The film is written and directed by Christian Guiton in his feature debut and based on a short of the same name. The film will shoot later this year for a 2026 release.

The upcoming movie Superman has a lot of weight on its shoulders. In addition to having to make back its own budget and turn a profit for Warner Bros. Discovery, James Gunn's Superman has the honor of launching the DC Universe. Now a new report claims just how much Superman must make to turn a profit and boost the DCU going forward. The new live-action endeavor, which features actor David Corenswet as the titular superhero, also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl. As mentioned, the film will fully introduce the DC Universe as a live-action film franchise, one that will use these cast members and various others to carry their films and shows forward. Of course, the DCU's future also depends on the financial success of the film, which is said to have a $225 million budget according to The Wrap. The outlet additionally spoke to a talent agent who offered their insights regarding what the film must make in order to turn a profit. With the $225 million budget in mind, this agent suggests that James Gunn's Superman will have to make as much as $700 million worldwide in order to be called a success by the studio. 'While release dates are important, I don't think the challenge is ' Jurassic World: Rebirth ' or any other film,' they shared. 'The challenge is almost entirely a question of if Superman resonates with today's audience. Did they successfully update an Eisenhower-era character so the 2025 Gen Z audience can identify with him?' 'The simple brand recognition of Superman will probably take them to or close to $500 million worldwide, but anything above that will be because the audience identifies with the title character,' the insider added. Additionally, another source claims $500 million could be enough to turn a profit, but Warner Bros. Discovery is hoping to make much, much more in an effort to rejuvenate the studio. While there are several DC Universe projects in the pipeline regardless of how Superman performs at the box office, the franchise's future could still be much shorter-lived if Superman fails. As such, we'll have to see how Superman plays out when it hits theaters on July 11, 2025 and whether or not it makes a profit. To their horror, they find themselves locked in while a "Saw"-esque broadcast explains that they must compete in "The Blackening," a trivia-based game on Black culture, if they want to survive. To make it through the night, they'll have to rely on their wits along with their deep knowledge of horror movie clichés. "The Blackening" is hilariously self-aware, poking fun at classic genre tropes while still delivering suspense and surprises. 'Love Island' Contestant Issues Apology After Being Removed From Show For Saying The N-Word
Shortly after Peacock announced the "Love Island USA" cast in late May 2025, video clips of a new islander, Yulissa Escobar, saying the N-word on a previous podcast went viral online. During the season's second episode, which aired on June 4, 2025, the "Love Island USA" narrator, Iain Stirling, announced that producers had removed Escobar from the villa, which many fans assumed was due to her past problematic statements. Now, after some time to process the news that she'd no longer be in the running for the $100,000 grand prize on the most recent season of "Love Island," Escobar released an apology, which has drawn a mixed reaction from fans. On Instagram, Escobar posted a graphic that read, "Owning my mistakes; speaking my truth." In the caption, she wrote, "First, I want to apologize for using a word I had no right in using," referring to viral clips of her using the N-word while speaking about men during a previous podcast episode. "In those clips, I used a word I never should've used, a racial slur," she wrote. "I used it ignorantly, not fully understanding the weight, history, or pain behind it." She continued, "I wasn't trying to be offensive or harmful, but I recognize now that intention doesn't excuse impact. And the impact of that word is real. It's tied to generations of trauma, and it is not mine to use." Elsewhere, in her caption, Escobar explained that when she used the word, she was "speaking casually in conversation" and wasn't thinking "deeply or critically" about how her words could impact others. "The truth is, I didn't know better then, but I do now. I've taken the time to reflect, to learn, and to grow from that moment," she added. "I've changed a lot since then, not just in how I speak, but in how I show up, how I carry myself, and how I honor the experiences of others," Escobar continued. "Growth means recognizing when you were wrong, even if it's uncomfortable, and choosing to move forward with humility and accountability." As she finished, the now-former reality star explained that she was choosing to speak for herself and did not want anyone commenting on her behalf. "I'm choosing to speak for myself because I take full ownership of my actions. Do not listen to the fake statements. This is my official statement. This is me, speaking directly to you," she wrote. On X, formerly Twitter, many "Love Island" viewers voiced their opinions about Escobar's statement, with many questioning its sincerity. "Girl, you just got kicked out of the villa," one user wrote. "How much time have you really taken to reflect on this?" "I understand why they chose to have her exit the villa, but she didn't learn anything by that," another user commented. "This apology may or may not have been genuine. Having her stay in the villa and understand the weight of the word would have either been a better lesson or shown viewers how she really feels." "Not understanding the weight, history, or pain of the word? I don't buy it," a user posted. "It doesn't take thinking 'deeply or critically' to know not to say the number one racial slur," another user shared. "This is so embarrassing." However, under Escobar's Instagram post, the 27-year-old also received support from a handful of followers.
