Ludhiana: 22 arrested for cyber fraud, ₹14 lakh seized
The first case dates back to February 2025 when Sanjeev Pandhi, a Machhiwara resident, was duped of ₹3.72 crore through a fake online trading company. The fraudsters lured him via Telegram app. Those arrested in this case are Neeraj Singhania from Dubai, his wife Sarita Singhania alias Ritu, Gurjot Singh of Salana in Fatehgarh Sahib, Baldev Krishan of Zirakpur, Parvinder Singh alias Tony of Chandigarh, Samaksh Bhatt and Amritpal Kaur of Mohali, Prince, Anmol Chauhan and Rahul Sagwan of Ludhiana, and five Moga residents — Prabjot Singh, Gurvinder Singh, Amol Singh, Simran Singh and Beant Kaur. The police recovered ₹9.35 lakh.
In another case, Mahendra Pratap Singh Gill from Machhiwara lost ₹2.65 crore after an unidentified caller posed as a law enforcement officer and threatened him under the pretext of a bank account inquiry. The police have arrested Karnamjit Singh and Gurveer Singh of Mohali, Kuljit Singh, Sanjeev Mittal, Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, Amritpal Singh alias Doctor and Mohan Singh of Jalandhar. Jalandhar residents Kuljit Singh and Mohan Singh have been identified as key suspects. Cops have recovered ₹5 lakh and are pursuing the remaining accused.
During the campaign, the cybercrime team also recovered 100 mobile phones linked to theft and fraud cases. SSP Jyoti Yadav said the police are determined to ensure victims recover their lost money. 'Those who cheat people of their hard-earned savings will not be spared. Investigations into bank accounts used in these frauds are underway, and efforts are being made to return funds to the victims,' she said.
Police have appealed to the public to stay vigilant against suspicious calls, links and online trading offers, and to immediately report such incidents on the Cyber Crime Helpline.

AIIMS doctor hit by car, dragged fro metres in road rage case
A doctor and professor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in south Delhi was allegedly hit by a car and dragged for a few metres under the wheels after an argument over the traffic on Monday, police said on Wednesday. The 29-year-old accused driver was detained on Wednesday and is being questioned. To help commuters,he said he gestured the Swift driver to move back his vehicle so others could pass. However, he did not move back, instead hit the doctor with his car. He hit the complainant twice before almost running over him and dragging him along with the car…' The accused has been identified as Shivam (single name), a private firm employee in Faridabad. The officer added that the doctor managed to escape from the car after sometime, but sustained injuries. The hospital management informed the police about the injured doctor. An FIR was lodged on Monday under BNS Section 110 (attempting to commit culpable homicide) at the Hauz Khas police station. HT tried reaching out to the victim, but could not get through. Another official said, 'The doctor had given his statement and we also spoke to others present near gate no 1. With the help of CCTV footage of the area, the accused was identified and nabbed." 'He is being interrogated about the sequence of the events and the motive behind the incident. It looks like he intentionally dragged the doctor to cause him harm.'

Sahibabad market violence: Trader held over remarks against woman
Ghaziabad: The Ghaziabad police have arrested Bijender Yadav, a trader at Sahibabad vegetable market, for allegedly making insulting remarks against a woman, the wife of a government officer, said officials on Wednesday. A spokesperson of the Congress' city unit has said that trader Yadav is not holding any party responsibility as of now. (HT Photos (Video grab)) On August 14, Yadav, along with 100-150 unidentified people, was booked in an FIR registered at the Link Road police station under the BNS sections for insulting the modesty of a woman, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, criminal intimidation, and threats that cause fear of death, grievous hurt, destruction of property by fire, or other serious offenses. 'Yadav, named in the FIR, was arrested on Tuesday under section 151 of Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) (to prevent the commission of cognizable offences). The FIR was lodged by the woman. However, even after a lot of persuasion, she or her husband has not come to the police to provide their statements so far. An investigation is underway,' said assistant commissioner of police (Sahibabad circle) Shweta Yadav. The woman alleged in her FIR that Yadav allegedly gave a speech to the Sahibabad vegetable market traders on August 11, and also passed insulting remarks against her and her husband. The incidents later took an ugly turn, and a group of men allegedly opened fire at traders, leaving two men injured. Several purported videos of the speech, firing and violence also went viral on the social media. Later, eight suspects of a group were arrested on August 11 evening for rioting, attempted murder, and violence. Earlier, Yadav, who is also ex-Congress district president, told HT that due to traders' harassment he had made the remarks. A spokesperson of the Congress' city unit said that Yadav is not holding any party responsibility as of now.

SUV rams stationary truck on Mathura Road, 1 dead

An investigating officer said the deceased was identified as Satbir Singh, who was employed as a driver for a family in south Delhi's Panchsheel Park in Hauz Khas. While Singh's family alleged that Juneja is the employer's son, police have not confirmed his profile yet. Deputy commissioner of police (southeast) Hemant Tiwari said Sarita Vihar police station received a call at 2.20am about a fatal accident on Mathura Road. When a police team reached the spot, they found a truck with Nagaland registration number on the carriageway from Ashram Chowk towards Badarpur. A Jeep Meridian SUV bearing Uttar Pradesh's registration number, with the front portion completely damaged, was found crashed into the rear portion of the truck 'In the collision, Singh, on the front passenger seat sustained injuries and died at a hospital. The third occupant of the car, Rajeev Sharma, is also a driver. It's not clear if they were also injured,' the DCP added. In a photograph circulating on social media, an empty alcohol bottle was found on a vehicle's seat. However, HT could not independently verify if the photo was of the same SUV that was involved in the accident. Police said they are also probing why the truck was stationed on one of the busiest roads of the city and where its driver and helper were. Singh lived with his family at IP Extension in east Delhi. His brother, Deepak Yadav, told media that he last spoke to him around 10.30pm on Tuesday. 'My brother told me that he was returning home. He was on the way when his employer's son, who recently came to India from Dubai, called him back and took him somewhere. Initially, my brother was driving the SUV but later Juneja took the wheel. I don't know if he failed to see the stationary truck. He could either be inebriated or did not have enough experience to drive on roads in India,' added Yadav.
