Lima'25 off to a flying start
LANGKAWI: Three F/A-18D Hornet and three Sukhoi SU-30MKM fighter jets soared over the skies here with a spectacular aerial display.
Then, tactical divers from the navy and police parachuted from an aircraft to a stage to hand a black box to the Prime Minister.
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim then activated a slot card in the box – and the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25) was under way.
The 17th edition saw a spectacular start with aerial displays by the Royal Malaysian Air Force at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre and a tactical sea demonstration by the navy.
Thousands, including local and foreign delegates, came to witness the event, according to Bernama.
After the opening act by the Hornets and the Sukhoi, there was a formation and aerobatic air show involving all 25 aerial assets, including six Pilatus PC-7 MK II training aircraft, two A400M transport aircraft, three C130H aircraft and eight helicopters of various types.
This was followed by a demonstration of tactical manoeuvres involving boats and jet skis from various maritime enforcement agencies.
Another highlight was a coordinated inter-agency maritime capability demonstration, with inter-agency coordinated 'hostage rescue operation' that showcased the combined expertise of the nation's security forces.

The final segment featured a fly-past and sail-past, where aircraft and vessels involved in the demonstration performed a ceremonial pass in front of the main stage, saluting the dignitaries in attendance.
The Prime Minister then took part in the fleet review of Lima'25, a naval tradition practised around the world involving the inspection of ships at sea.
This year's Lima marks a significant national agenda as part of the government's strategic commitment to position Malaysia as a global hub for maritime and aerospace industries.
This year's event brings together 860 exhibitors from 24 countries, with 426 international and 434 local companies.
The five-day exhibition, which ends on Saturday, is themed 'Today's Innovation, Tomorrow's Achievements'.
Lima remains one of the largest maritime and aerospace exhibitions in South-East Asia since its inception in 1991.

Anwar, who is also finance minister, said the decision to set up the task force was made during the special Cabinet committee on national governance meeting today. 'As part of efforts to strengthen the role of the national audit department through amendments to the Audit Act 1957, the meeting agreed to establish a task force to address serious irregularities,' he said in a Facebook post. During the meeting, he stressed the importance of addressing audit findings related to financial irregularities that could undermine the country's fiscal management. He said the new task force will ensure that follow-up actions are more holistic, targeted and have high impact, in keeping with the principles of accountability, transparency and integrity. Last month, Auditor-General Wan Suraya Wan Radzi said the amended Audit Act, which came into force last year, empowers the department to conduct audits on 1,856 GLCs. She was quoted as saying the amendment expands the department's scope, thereby strengthening the government's oversight of governance and financial management within GLCs. The changes include the expansion of the auditor-general's powers to include audits of entities receiving government financial guarantees, by introducing the 'follow the public money' audit approach. Wan Suraya said, moving forward, all GLCs would be held accountable for any irregularities identified in the auditor-general's report. She highlighted that the committee responsible for following up on actions taken based on the auditor-general's report had uncovered several instances of leakages in state and federal financial statements, which are now in the process of being recovered. She added that beyond the recovery of public funds, the audit process aims to determine whether serious irregularities, governance lapses or systemic failures have occurred.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will be setting up a special task force to address serious financial irregularities to strengthen the credibility of the country's fiscal management, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a post on his social media account, he said the decision was made during the Special Cabinet Committee on National Governance (JKKTN) meeting he chaired earlier today. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said that the committee had taken a serious view of the audit findings on financial irregularities as they could potentially affect the credibility of the country's fiscal management. "In line with efforts to strengthen the role of the National Audit Department through amendments to the Audit Act 1957, the JKKTN agreed to establish a special task force to address serious financial irregularities," he said, adding that this is to ensure more holistic, targeted, and effective response measures in accordance with the principles of accountability, transparency, and integrity. - BERNAMA

Teoh Beng Hock's sister demands accountability
KUALA LUMPUR: The sister of Teoh Beng Hock has demanded transparency and accountability from the authorities after the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) and police decided not to pursue further action in the 2009 case. Beng Hock's sister, Lee Lan expressed her dismay over the decision for no further action (NFA), especially given that multiple court rulings had established the death was not due to suicide or an accident. She said that the Court of Appeal had ruled in 2014 that Teoh's death was caused by the actions of individuals, including Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers, and demanded that the police investigate the case under the proper criminal provisions. "The recent police investigation of the case was under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement, instead of provisions appropriate for a homicide case. "The post-mortem revealed serious neck injuries, yet no one has been held is a clear case of homicide," she said at a solidarity event for her brother. She also called for those currently in the government to act appropriately as they had in the past stood by the fact that he was killed. "Those in government now, had in the past stood by the fact that Beng Hock was killed. "Why now NFA? It's a slap on their face (on what they have stood for)," she said. Last month, Beng Hock's family was informed by police that their latest investigation into the case had been classified as requiring no further action or NFA. On Nov 21 last year, the High Court had directed the police to complete their long-delayed investigation into the death more than 15 years ago. Beng Hock died on July 16, 2009 at the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). An inquest was held and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that his death was caused by "one or more persons unknown", including MACC officers. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. Prior to 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh's death, but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor. Meanwhile, Eliminating Deaths and Abuse in Custody Together (Edict) chairman M. Visvanathan, said he would be able to solve the case within 21 days if he were appointed as a special prosecutor. Speaking at the same event, he called for the A-GC to appoint him as an ad hoc prosecutor to oversee the case involving Beng Hock's death. This, he said as three doctors had confirmed that Beng Hock had injuries to his neck which occurred prior to his fall from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam. "I propose to the AG, prime minister and home ministry, make me the ad hoc prosecutor. I will solve this case within 21 days of my appointment," he said.
