Mesa County fairgrounds converted into a fire base camp for the Turner Gulch fire

MESA COUNTY Colo. (KREX)- The Turner Gulch fire continues to burn, pushed by red flag conditions that have made firefighting efforts challenging. The fire has now burned 24,945 acres, following almost a 5,000 acre growth overnight and is 49% contained. After the Mesa County Fair wrapped up, crews began transforming these fairgrounds into a base camp for firefighters battling the Turner Gulch fire. Northern Rockies Incident Management Team 2 Public Information Officer, Emily Ficker tells WesternSlopeNow more about the location of camp: 'Fairgrounds are a good location for an incident command post for a fire because they have the room that we need to be able to set up all of the things that we need. An incident is supported by finance, logistics, operations, ground support, public information and liaisons.' The location is ideal, with enough space, power, and internet to keep operations moving smoothly. Oftentimes, schools are used for fire bases but with Wednesday marking the first day of school in Mesa County, and the fire still active, planners knew a long-term option would be needed. On Wednesday, a pick-me-up took place at base camp– therapy dogs made a special visit to help boost morale for crews who've been working tirelessly. Many of the crew members have pets back at home that they miss, and were more than excited for the arrival of the dogs. Fire crews will remain staged at the fairgrounds as long as needed. Red flag conditions are expected to continue through the end of the week. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
