John Mulaney didn't meet Olivia Munn's mother until after their son was born

Perth Now14-05-2025

John Mulaney didn't meet Olivia Munn's mother until after their first child had been born.
The 44-year-old actress gave birth to son Malcolm, three, in November 2021 after starting to date the 'Everybody's Live' host earlier that year, and her mother Dung Kim Schmid didn't get to meet him until after their new arrival.
Olivia told 'Late Night With Seth Meyers': "So Malcolm was born the day before Thanksgiving and my mom comes, first of all, never met John by this point."
Her mother didn't "even say 'hi' to John" at first, instead removing frozen turkeys from her luggage as she revealed a family "tradition" to the 'Saturday Night Live' star.
Olivia - who gave birth to baby girl Méi June in September last year - recalled: "She says to John, 'You know, it's so exciting, in my family with all of our kids, the tradition [is] we put a drumstick in their hand for their first Thanksgiving when they're a baby'...
"I was like, 'That's not a tradition. What is she talking about?' "
John thought the tradition was "cool", but Olivia was totally baffled by her mother insisted it happened for "everybody's first Thanksgiving".
She phoned her siblings to see if they had any photos to back their mother up.
She added: "They said, 'No because she's lying. That's not true.' "
However, they still took the photo, and her mother made sure to get the last laugh.
Revealing the snap on the late night talk show, she said: "So, in this photo, John's holding Malcolm. My mom gets her turkey leg, she puts it there, she pats his hand and goes, 'Okay a new tradition.' "
John - who revealed last summer he had secretly tied the knot with actress Olivia in New York City - previously opened up about his new in-laws, including Kim, who immigrated from Vietnam to the US in 1975.
Asked about getting to know his wife's family, he told 'Late Night with Seth Myers': "It's the greatest single time in my life.
"I've been in a lot of interesting situations. I've never - marrying into a large Vietnamese family is one of the most fun things I've ever done."
When his friend asked for more details, John quipped: "If I did a perfectly accurate impersonation of my mother-in-law, it would be a career ender."

Daryl Hall believes that he helped break down racial barriers in music

Daryl Hall believes that he blazed a trail for modern artists. The 78-year-old singer found fame as the lead vocalist in duo Hall and Oates - alongside John Oates - during the 1970s and 1980s and considers himself a "pioneer" for helping to destroy racial barriers in music. Daryl told Classic Pop magazine: "I was one of those pioneers in breaking down those barriers between Black music and white music, whatever that means. "My earliest success was on Black radio in America. I had to break into the white pop world in America. That was secondary, after the fact. So that's where my roots are. That's where my initial success started." The 'Maneater' vocalist added: "I think it had a lot to do with me as a singer and my background. "Being from Philly, a very colourblind area, helped me be able to break those barriers down. Luckily, I figured out how to do it." Daryl is now performing solo as he finds himself embroiled in an legal battle with John after he sued his musical partner in 2023 to prevent him from selling their stake in publishing company Whole Oats Enterprises and admits that he feels less constrained playing alone. He explained: "I really was restricted. When I was (performing) with John on stage, we had this rule that we couldn't play any other work than what we did under the Hall and Oates name. "And it was very restrictive to me, because I love all those solo songs - I wrote most of them - but there was a lot that I had been doing over the years that I couldn't play. I had no outlet. "So now, I'm completely liberated and it's much more fun." Daryl also believes that his soulful singing voice has gotten better with age. The 'Private Eyes' hitmaker explained: "Well, with age and maturity, my voice has mellowed and kind of opened up in a way. I had maybe more high note facility as a young guy. You know, I could sing into the stratosphere. Now, I've lost a little of that, but I've gained other things. "I'm basically a soul singer, and I think my voice is more appropriate sounding to my emotions and my soulful thing than it used to be when I was a young kid. "So, it came from wisdom and experience. And a few whiskeys, too."

Joss Stone looks forward to UK homecoming

Joss Stone is looking forward to relocating to the UK. The 38-year-old singer - who has Violet, four, Shackleton, two, and Bear, seven months, with husband Cody DaLuz - left the UK for the US eight years ago, but she's now planning to return to her roots in Devon, south-west England, later this year. The 'You Had Me' hitmaker - who is expecting another baby in a few weeks' time - told HELLO! magazine: "We'll be back for my eldest, Violet, to start school. Me and my siblings can all help each other and it'll be lovely for the kids. "When I went away I was 30 and I told my mum: 'I'm not coming back until I have a husband and a kid' - and I'm coming back with four!" Joss has loved bonding with Bear over the last seven months. The singer - who married Cody in 2023 - shared: "We brought him home the night before Thanksgiving and he is just so mellow. "I don't know if it's because he is the third, or if it's because of who he is. He's so gorgeous. I love him." Meanwhile, Joss recently revealed that her husband sleeps in a separate room to her. The music star and Cody actually changed their nightly routine because of their children. Joss said on the 'A Cuppa Love' podcast: "I sleep with my daughter Violet now. "Cody watches horror movies. Every now and then I'll wake up and I'll go in and give him a little cuddle. "It's so crazy - we have so many children, I have to make sure that they stay asleep without screaming. So this is a children's scenario. "I'm like, I'm not going to be in there, waking [Cody] up every five minutes. I go in with my baby Violet who, by the way, will not go to sleep unless I'm there - that's probably my fault, but I love that - and then I do my whole night shift. But it's crazy. "People are like, 'Oh, that's so bad!' But I'm still not going in there because he watches horror movies. I'm not doing that."

Country star Kelsea Ballerini 'needs a break'

Kelsea Ballerini plans to "figure out what's next" over the summer. The 31-year-old singer wrapped Kelsea Ballerini Live on Tour in April and she now plans to take a prolonged break from the music industry, before embarking on her next challenge. Kelsea - who also made her debut on 'The Voice' earlier this year - said on 'TODAY with Jenna and Friends': "I need a break! "And I've never been able to say that before, but I really think it's just time for me to pump the brakes, figure out what's next, have a summer, what?! Go to the beach? Huh? Learn to cook a new meal, hang out with the dogs, so that's kind of my agenda." Kelsea observed that her plans are often derailed by unforeseen events and career opportunities. She added: "I'm very open to whatever is out there." Kelsea also revealed that she relished her experience on 'The Voice'. The 'Half of My Hometown' hitmaker reflected: "I think ending my first arena tour, ending my first time on 'The Voice', it's just been such a beautiful season of doing things that are out of my comfort zone and bigger than I've ever done and it's been really fulfilling. I love being in that seat." Earlier this month, John Legend observed that Kelsea has been "very good" on 'The Voice'. The singer debuted as a coach on the hit TV show in February, and John was impressed by his co-star, describing her as a "wonderful" addition to the line-up. John, 46 - who serves as one of the coaches alongside Kelsea, Michael Buble and Adam Levine - told 'Extra': "She took to the show quickly. "She's been a guest on the show before; she guest coached for Kelly [Clarkson] before and so I think she came in just knowing how everything worked and she was ready to go. "She has such a great personality. She's been very good at winning artists for her team, especially the ladies. I definitely knew I had no chance against her with some of the ladies. You could tell the girl power thing was working. "She's been wonderful and she's been great to get to know on the show."
