'Single most stupid rule': Delhi's fuel ban on old vehicles faces flak
The decision triggered widespread discontent on social media. Citizens questioned the logic of age-based bans despite valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates.
Enforcement underway; 80 vehicles seized on Day 1
On the first day of enforcement, citywide checks led to the seizure of 80 vehicles — including 67 two-wheelers and 12 cars — for violating the new regulation, according to news agency PTI.
Teams from the Transport Department, Delhi Police, Traffic Police, and Municipal Corporation of Delhi joined the drive that began at 6 am.
The move has left many social media users shocked and perplexed. Some questioned the relevance of continuing to mandate Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates if vehicles were to be banned solely based on age.
Strategic affairs analyst Sushant Sareen criticised the policy's logic in a post on X, stating, "Single most stupid rule. Scrap a polluting vehicle even if it's 1 year old; allow a non-polluting vehicle even if it's 20 years old. Enforce pollution norms strictly. But scraping vehicles just on age of vehicle is a brainless thing to do. Since it's NGC-dictated, no one wants to challenge this foolishness."
Policy slammed for hurting middle-class vehicle owners
Entrepreneur Arun Prabhudesai also criticised the ban's lack of support measures for car owners: "Out of these 62 lakh car owners, most would have spent their entire life savings to buy their dream car, taken it on EMI, spent years paying it off and then one day, it's suddenly banned. For those who've maintained their vehicle well, this policy shouldn't apply. There's a reason why PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificates exist."

Prabhudesai said the policy looked good on paper but failed to consider ground realities such as the high cost of electric vehicles (EVs), limited exchange schemes, and poor charging infrastructure.
A Delhi resident posted that he is being forced to sell his Range Rover SUV at a throwaway price due to the new rule. He also shared a photograph of his Range Rover -- an SUV currently in its eighth year.

Another user remarked that India was attempting to impose Nordic-style regulations while lacking basic urban infrastructure. 'We don't even have footpaths,' the post read, comparing the policy to practices in Sweden and Norway.
Why the rule is being enforced
The BJP-led Delhi government's action follows directives from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) aimed at tackling emissions from older vehicles. It builds on previous orders from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banning aged diesel and petrol vehicles from plying on roads.
The Delhi government has now extended this to fuel stations, preventing refuelling as a means to ensure stricter compliance.

Jaishankar on Wednesday (August 20) pressed Russia to address India's ballooning trade deficit even as Moscow pledged to keep supplying discounted oil despite US tariff threats and said it hoped trilateral talks with India and China would soon resume. Jaishankar, who is in Moscow to co-chair the 26th session of the Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation, noted that bilateral trade had risen more than five-fold in four years, from $13 billion in 2021 to $ 68 billion in 2024-25, but that India's trade deficit with Russia had widened nearly nine times to $58.9 billion. 'So we need to address that urgently,' he said in his opening remarks. India's trade with Russia had long remained modest until the Ukraine war, when traditional crude suppliers in West Asia shifted exports toward Europe. India responded by sharply increasing its purchases of discounted Russian oil, driving a surge in overall trade volumes. Outlining the agenda of the inter-governmental commission, Jaishankar listed the need to remove tariff and non-tariff barriers, ease logistics bottlenecks, expand connectivity projects such as the International North-South Transport Corridor and the Chennai-Vladivostok Corridor, and ensure smooth payment mechanisms. He also called for the early conclusion of the India-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement and closer engagement between businesses to help reach the revised target of growing bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030. Russian first deputy prime minister Denis Manturov, who co-chaired the meeting, was quoted by Interfax as saying that shipments of crude, petroleum products and coal to India would continue, while Moscow also saw scope for expanding liquefied natural gas exports. Manturov added that Russia was seeking deeper cooperation with India in nuclear energy. In New Delhi, Russian officials echoed that oil supplies to India would remain steady despite Washington's decision to raise tariffs on Indian exports to 50%, half of which the US has linked to Russian crude imports. Roman Babushkin, the charge d'affaires at the Russian embassy, said Moscow and New Delhi would find ways to overcome the US measures in their 'national interests'. 'I want to highlight that despite the political situation, we can predict … the same level of oil import,' he told reporters. Deputy trade commissioner Evgeny Griva said discounted prices made Russian oil 'very profitable' for India, with supplies averaging 5%-7% cheaper than other sources. He said Moscow had developed a 'special mechanism' to keep flows uninterrupted and had begun accepting rupee payments after resolving issues that had left billions of dollars stuck in Indian banks. Babushkin, the second-seniormost Russian diplomat in India, also hoped that with warming ties between New Delhi and Beijing, there would be potential to revive trilateral cooperation with India and China under what it calls a 'greater Eurasian partnership'. Trade deficit rising due to oil buy, need to address it: EAM in Russia
Photo/PTI NEW DELHI: On a visit to Moscow, external affairs minister S Jaishankar has suggested measures to further expand the trade relationship and to address the trade deficit of $58.9 billion that has resulted from India's increased oil procurement from Russia. The minister said this trade imbalance needed to be addressed urgently. Ahead of Jaishankar's meeting with his counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Thursday, Russia said in a statement that the main emphasis would be on promoting transportation, logistics, banking and financial chains independent from countries imposing sanctions, as well as expanding the use of national currencies in mutual settlements. Addressing tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, removing bottlenecks in logistics, promoting connectivity, effecting payment mechanisms smoothly and early conclusion of the India-Eurasian Economic Union FTA, whose terms of reference were finalised on Wednesday, were some of the measures he suggested to diversify trade relations and address the imbalance. "They will not only help to address the imbalance and grow our trade, but also hasten the timely achievement of our revised trade target of $100 billion by 2030," said Jaishankar, co-chairing the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) with Russia's first deputy PM Denis Manturov. Lavrov is expected to brief him about the Russia-US summit in Alaska. "It is planned to touch upon the issues of enhancing cooperation in the transport, energy, agricultural and scientific-technical spheres," said the Russian statement.

'We have noted the comments of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal related to resumption of border trade between India and China through the Lipulekh pass," he said. 'Our position in this regard has been consistent and clear. Border trade between India and China through Lipulekh pass had commenced in 1954 and has been going on for decades," he added. Jaiswal said the trade had been disrupted in recent years due to COVID-19 pandemic and other developments, and both sides have now agreed to resume it. 'As regards territorial claims, our position remains that such claims are neither justified nor based on historical facts and evidence. Any unilateral artificial enlargement of territorial claims is untenable," he said. 'India remains open to constructive interaction with Nepal on resolving agreed outstanding boundary issues through dialogue and diplomacy," he added.
