Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission launches review after last month's severe storms
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission will undertake a post-storm review following last month's deadly storms that severed electric service to more than 500,000 customers across the southwestern Pennsylvania region.
Led by the Commission's Bureau of Technical Utility Services, the review will "examine how utilities responded to this significant event, assess the impact of the storm on infrastructure and operations, and identify opportunities to improve planning and resilience for future storms," according to a news release from the PUC.
"This was not a routine weather event," said PUC Chairman Steve DeFrank. "The intensity and scale of the damage - impacting electric systems, roads, communications networks, and other infrastructure - demand a closer look. As we continue to recover, we also need to understand what happened, what worked, what didn't, and what can be done better moving forward."
The review will explore storm-related issues involving Duquesne Light and FirstEnergy utilities.
Officials will examine issues like outage causes, review the efficacy of utility emergency response plans, and provide recommendations that utilities, communities, residents, and businesses can take to better prepare for future extreme weather.
"Our goal is to evaluate every storm to learn, adapt, and strengthen Pennsylvania's utility systems," said PUC Vice Chair Kimberly Barrow. "It is important to study how storm intensity, patterns, and impacts are changing so that we can better prepare and protect our communities."
According to Commission records, Duquesne Light has not experienced storm-related outages of this magnitude since at least 1993.
"The strength of our utility network lies not just in how we respond to today's challenges, but in how we prepare for tomorrow's," Chairman DeFrank added. "We regularly examine the impact of major storms in Pennsylvania because every emergency situation is a learning opportunity - and we are committed to turning those lessons into action."

Scattered rain and heat expected in Acadiana this week
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – After a humid start to the day, temperatures warm quickly through the day reaching the lower 90s in the afternoon. A few storms will develop, but much of the area will stay rain-free today. Tonight, any rain comes to an end as temperatures settle in the 70s. Sunday will see similar conditions around the area with hot temperatures in the afternoon but there will be a better rain chances. Showers and storms should be more scattered in nature allowing for some cooling effects for Acadiana. In the tropics, dry air and wind shear continue to prevent any tropical development and no tropical activity is expected through the next 7 days. Locally, we will be watching an increase in rain chances next week as a weak cold front settles across the area. This will lead to widespread daily storm chances with some heavier rainfall possible towards midweek. The good news with the rain chances is that temperatures will remain cooler in the upper 80s for highs. Download the KLFY Weather App by clicking here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. After heavy rains bring flash flooding to the Pittsburgh area, cleanup efforts begin
Friday evening was a flat-out dangerous time to be outside as heavy rains hit the region and brought fast, flash flooding. Now, on Saturday, a ton of cleanup lies ahead. The streets were flooded in Wall Borough, leaving many to grab whatever they could and get out, leaving the mess behind. That mess included sheds being damaged, cars submerged, and even a natural gas line being exposed. Valley Avenue in Wall Borough turned into a river as torrential waters rushed down the street, leaving residents shocked and stunned. "[It] looks pretty bad, the roads tore up, I have water coming through the walls of my basement and into my living room," said Pattie Marshall, a resident of Valley Avenue. The severe weather swept through the Pittsburgh area, not just on Valley Avenue, but others, leaving the same results: flash flooding and water rescues. Meanwhile, in Wall Borough, the streets were covered with debris, damaged homes, sheds that were pulled off their foundations, and vehicles pushed into fences. Luckily, emergency crews were able to move in quickly and get the road reopened. No injuries were reported during the flooding, but now, many are left with damaged homes and a big cleanup effort ahead of them. Impacts from Friday's strong storms Not far from Wall Borough, a car became nearly completely submerged in water on the Tri-Boro Expressway in Monroeville. A spokesperson for Allegheny County said swift water rescue teams were sent to impacted areas, including North Versailles and White Oak. At least three rescues were made from two homes in North Versailles, and one person was rescued from a car in floodwaters in White Oak.

Staying muggy with some showers today
Typical Saturday–clouds and showers! It is a dry, albeit muggy start with patchy fog. We will see showers develop later this morning and continue through the afternoon. This will definitely affect some outdoor plans, so my apologies in advance. It will be cooler, but still humid with highs in the low 70s. At least Sunday will be drier! I don't think we'll see a lot of sunshine tomorrow since the clouds will drag their heels, but there will be some breaks and blue sky with lower humidity. I've introduced a few showers into the forecast for Monday. And of course, we are still tracking some afternoon thundershowers on Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday look like the best days of the week! Today: Cloudy with showers/storms developing late morning. Cooler, still humid. Highs in the low 70s. Tonight: Mostly cloudy with patchy fog. Lows near 60°. Sunday: Partial sun. Less humid, highs in the mid to upper 70s. Monday: Mostly cloudy with a few spotty showers. Highs in the low 70s. Tuesday: Mainly cloudy with a round of afternoon showers/storms. Highs in the low 70s. Wednesday: Brighter and warmer. Highs in the low 80s. Thursday: Nice and bright. Highs in the low to mid 80s. Friday: More clouds with a chance of showers. Highs in the low to mid 80s. Saturday: Watching for a chance of showers. Highs in the mid 70s. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
