At least 10 people, including a child, were killed in an Israeli air strike that set fire to a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in Gaza City, according to local emergency services.
The Palestinian Civil Defence reported recovering the bodies early on Wednesday after flames engulfed parts of the Yafa School, which had been converted into a shelter for families uprooted by ongoing hostilities.
Footage circulating on social media showed tents in flames, with melted canvas covering burnt furniture and beds. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as fire consumed the temporary shelters.
The attack occurred amid heavy overnight shelling and air raids in multiple locations across the Strip.
Civil defence teams also appealed for urgent assistance to rescue people trapped under rubble in Gaza City's Tuffah neighbourhood, where two residential buildings were hit.
Officials said rescue efforts were delayed due to the area being deemed a 'no-go zone' by Israeli forces.
Further casualties were reported in northern Gaza's Jabalia refugee camp, where two people, including a child, died in an earlier strike. In the south, one person was killed and several wounded in a drone attack on shelters in the al-Mawasi area, previously designated as a 'safe zone.'
Since resuming its offensive in March, Israel has imposed a total aid blockade on Gaza, citing ongoing efforts to retrieve hostages.
Over 51,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict since October 2023, according to Gaza's health ministry. The Israeli government has yet to comment on the latest incidents.

Israel strike on Lebanon kills two

BEIRUT: Lebanon said an Israeli drone strike on Tuesday killed a man and his son in a southern village, the latest deadly attack despite a November ceasefire, with Israel claiming the two. The Lebanese health ministry said in a statement that 'an Israeli enemy drone carried out a strike in the village of Shebaa, killing two people and wounding one'. The two dead were a father and his son, with the state-run National News Agency saying the man wounded was also his son. The Israeli military said it had killed a Hezbollah member and an operative with the Lebanese Resistance Brigades, which is affiliated with the group. A military statement said the two men were 'handling weapons used by Hezbollah for terrorist purposes and for observation of (Israeli) soldiers in the area', near the border. Israel strike on south Lebanon kills one Israel has repeatedly bombed its northern neighbour despite the November ceasefire that ended more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah including two months of full-blown war. In the capital Beirut, a Lebanese military official told AFP that army forces had launched a search in a building in the city's southern suburbs, a densely populated area where Hezbollah holds sway. The official said the forces were looking for weapons at the request of a five-member committee supervising the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire. Israel warned on Friday that it would keep up its strikes on Hezbollah targets across Lebanon. The Lebanese government has condemned a massive Israeli strike on south Beirut last week, on the eve of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. Hezbollah said the Israeli air raid levelled nine residential blocks. The Israeli military said the strikes targeted underground drone factories. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the attack as 'a flagrant violation' of the ceasefire agreement.

Israel waging 'campaign to obliterate Palestinian life in Gaza': UN expert

Listen to article UN experts said in a report on Tuesday that Israel committed the crime against humanity of "extermination" by killing civilians sheltering in schools and religious sites in Gaza, part of a "concerted campaign to obliterate Palestinian life." The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel was due to present the report to Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Council on June 17. "We are seeing more and more indications that Israel is carrying out a concerted campaign to obliterate Palestinian life in Gaza," former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, who chairs the commission, said in a statement. "Israel's targeting of the educational, cultural and religious life of the Palestinian people will harm the present generations and generations to come, hindering their right to self-determination," she added. The commission examined attacks on educational facilities and religious and cultural sites to assess if international law was breached. Israel disengaged from the Human Rights Council in February, alleging it was biased. When the commission's last report in March found Israel carried out "genocidal acts" against Palestinians by systematically destroying women's healthcare facilities during the conflict in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the findings were biased and antisemitic. In its latest report, the commission said Israel had destroyed more than 90% of the school and university buildings and more than half of all religious and cultural sites in Gaza. "Israeli forces committed war crimes, including directing attacks against civilians and wilful killing, in their attacks on educational facilities ... In killing civilians sheltering in schools and religious sites, Israeli security forces committed the crime against humanity of extermination," it said. The war was triggered when Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people in Israel in a surprise attack in October 2023, and took 251 hostages back to the enclave, according to Israeli tallies. Israel responded with a military campaign that has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities. Harm done to the Palestinian education system was not confined to Gaza, the report found, citing increased Israeli military operations in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as well as harassment of students and settler attacks there. "Israeli authorities have also targeted Israeli and Palestinian educational personnel and students inside Israel who expressed concern or solidarity with the civilian population in Gaza, resulting in their harassment, dismissal or suspension and in some cases humiliating arrests and detention," it said. "Israeli authorities have particularly targeted female educators and students, intending to deter women and girls from activism in public places," the commission added

Palestinian death toll mounts with over 35 killed since dawn

Israeli attacks across Gaza since early Tuesday killed 37 Palestinians and wounded over 200, including 19 fatalities near an Israeli-backed aid distribution site, according to medics. At least 19 Palestinians were killed and over 200 others were injured when Israeli forces opened fire at civilians who gathered to receive aid from an Israeli-backed aid distribution point near the Netzarim Corridor area, south of Gaza City. Witnesses, told Anadolu Agency, that Israeli quadcopter drones also opened fire towards the aid-seekers near the site. A medical source said 12 more people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Jabalia town in northern Gaza. Meanwhile, three people of a family were killed when a displaced persons' tent in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, was bombed by the Israeli army, while other strikes targeted homes and Red Crescent facilities in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, resulting in three more fatalities. The attacks came as Israeli drones dropped smoke bombs over the eastern areas of Gaza City, according to Wafa News Agency said. Israel's war on Gaza Israel has continued its military campaign in Gaza despite widespread international calls for a ceasefire, with nearly 54,900 Palestinians reported killed since October 2023, most of them women and children, according to Gaza's health authorities. Aid agencies warn that over 2 million residents of the besieged enclave face acute risks of famine and displacement. In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, citing allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Gaza conflict. Israel is also currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its military operations against Palestinian civilians in the territory.
