Report: Patriots CB Marcellas Dial suffers torn ACL

New England Patriots' second-year cornerback Marcellas Dial has torn the ACL in his left knee and likely will miss the entire season, ESPN reported on Tuesday. Dial suffered the injury Monday during practice and was carted off the field. A sixth-round pick out of South Carolina in 2024, the 24-year-old Dial played in all 17 games as a rookie. He made his lone start in the final week of the season and posted five tackles. Otherwise, Dial was a key member of the Patriots' special teams -- making seven of his 12 tackles on kick coverage. Dial was regarded as a backup to starting cornerbacks Carlton Davis III and Christian Gonzalez. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

UFC champ Dricus Du Plessis reveals best opponent he's faced: 'One hell of a fight'

UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis has fought some tough competition throughout his tenure with the promotion, but one opponent especially stands out to him. Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) endured two hard-fought battles with Sean Strickland, but it was his recent title defense against Israel Adesanya at UFC 305 that hit different. Du Plessis submitted Adesanya in Round 4 after a back-and-forth battle. "My toughest opponent to date, well that's a very open-ended question because there were fights that were the hardest for me," Du Plessis said in an interview with Betway South Africa. "I have to say probably Adesanya was the best guy I faced in his specific area, probably the fight I was most nervous for just in terms of how good he is. "He can catch you with anything, anytime. All the time I spent looking up to him and studying him because he was the benchmark. Knowing what he's capable of, I think he's the best guy I've faced and obviously if you watch that fight, it was one hell of a fight. It was a tough night at the office for both of us." Du Plessis will look to notch his third title defense when he takes on Khamzat Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 headliner on Aug. 16 at United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). The South African champ has finished all but two opponents in his career. "When you go on pure toughness, you have to go with either Brad Tavares or Sean Strickland," Du Plessis continued. "Just the amount of damage they were able to take and just keep going."

ESPN's Holly Rowe provides promising Caitlin Clark injury update

While Caitlin Clark missed her seventh straight contest during the Indiana Fever's road date at the Seattle Storm, ESPN reporter Holly Rowe provided an encouraging update on Clark's injury recovery. "Well, Stephanie White did give us a small update on Caitlin that she has started some full-court running, full-speed running the last four or five days. Still not doing full basketball activities, but there has been some progress made recently," Rowe reported. That's significant progress for Clark. Fever coach Stephanie White also provided an update on Clark during her pregame media session. "Yeah, we have updates and her recovery's going well. It's just, I think for us, staying the course, and making sure that we're really diligent about each step that we take and that we don't have setbacks and that we're patient with it. "I know she wants to be out here on the floor and we want her out here on the floor, but making sure that she's ready is the most important thing. I still don't know how far we are. We're going to take it one step at a time, one day at a time and go from there,' White said. Last Sunday, Rowe shared an injury update on the Indiana Fever star and provided a possible window for Clark to return. According to Rowe, Fever coach Stephanie White indicated Clark didn't get enough practice and conditioning time with the team when she made her return from a left groin injury. The Fever intend to be much more patient in this return from a right groin injury. With this injury return, the Fever want more of a ramp-up with more practice and conditioning time. That led Rowe to suggest later in August might make sense as a timeline for Clark's return from this right groin injury. Indiana has a break during the third week of August, between the Fever's Aug. 17 road game against the Connecticut Sun and their Aug. 22 home game against the Minnesota Lynx. In 13 games played, Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game on 36.7% field goal shooting and 27.9% 3-point accuracy.
