Lack of big name signings part of why Revolution languish at back of MLS pack
'Obviously, a difficult game against very good team,' Gil said. 'We work defensively, not many chances for teams. But, obviously, right now the difference between both teams — I think they are a contender for sure. They win many good things during their last years, and another team [the Revolution] that the last two years were a bad team. Obviously, we tried to compete but . . .' Actually, the Revolution matched up well with LAFC in most positions. But they could not equal LAFC's forward combination of Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-Min, playing his second MLS game since arriving on a free transfer from Tottenham Hotspur. Son set up both goals, causing a turnover as Marky Delgado finished (51st minute), and assisting Mathieu Choinière in stoppage time. Son also helped attract a crowd of 27,043 — many saluting his heritage by displaying South Korean flags — and acknowledged the support with a postgame walk-around of Gillette Stadium. With Bob Bradley coaching, LAFC showed it could compete in MLS starting from scratch. Actually, Tata Martino and Atlanta United were a step ahead, winning the 2018 MLS Cup in their second season. Unlike Atlanta United, though, LAFC continued to build on early success, adding Gareth Bale from Tottenham alongside Bouanga and Carlos Vela as they captured the 2022 MLS Cup title. Advertisement The Revolution have never pursued similarly ambitious signings, but under Bruce Arena broke LAFC's points record in 2021. They slid mostly downhill since, and after going 9-21-4 (31 points) last year, the Revolution revamped the roster. But lineups have failed to click, and they have slumped to a 1-9-2 record since May 31. Against LAFC, the Revolution produced early chances, but collapsed under pressure early in the second half. And when the Revolution did break through, they confronted another difference-maker, Hugo Lloris, who won the 2018 World Cup as France's goalkeeper. 'I think not just in attack,' Gil said of the Revolution's problems. 'Obviously, we are not having the best season in attack, we are not scoring many goals. But, then, when we score many [goals], then we concede many, too, you know. So, in the end, it's just finding a way to win games, and we are not finding the way. 'It's difficult, not just for me, for everyone. In the last two years, we lose many games, we don't win a lot, so it's difficult to say we are in a good way. We need to be honest and true, and the reality is that we need to change. We are, like I say, far, far, far from this team. So, right now, we are not there and hopefully we can be soon but we need to change many many things.' Advertisement Gil, though, did not offer solutions. 'I don't know,' the league's 2021 MVP said. 'It's not my job, you know. My job is just try to play, to be the best Carles, and try to help the team. I repeat, I'm just a player and just — I want to win. 'What I know is, not just me, but everyone sees. I don't think anyone in the front office, players, are going to say we are in a good way, this is what we want, no, in the last two years. So, I think when you are in bad situations and the feeling is also bad — it's not like, 'Oh, we are doing good things but it is not happening.' No, it's many games, two consecutive seasons. 'So, in the end, it's try to find a way. And this club deserves that, and the fans, too, and, hopefully, we can be back [to] some years ago, when we were one of the best clubs in the league.' The Revolution have tried to develop a competitive squad, but can't match the ambition of LAFC or Inter Miami. Coach Caleb Porter said they are close to adding a player, but whoever the Revolution bring in will certainly not have the impact of Son, Bale, or Bouanga. Which means playoffs remain a longshot this year, and you can forget about winning an MLS Cup. The roster and salary cap restrictions to promote parity has long meant anyone could maintain hope of contending for a title, despite regular-season failures. A league mantra states that if you make it to the playoffs, 'anything can happen.' But LAFC and Inter Miami are negating that idea by pushing the envelope on league policies, breaking a cycle of mediocrity. Last year, an Apple TV executive encouraged others to emulate the interest generated by Lionel Messi, whatever the cost (it's modest, compared to other soccer leagues). Anyone witnessing the enthusiasm surrounding Miami and LAFC visits to Gillette Stadium would have to agree. Lionel Messi Returns From Injury, Scores Inter Miami's Game-Winner vs. MLS Champs
After missing Inter Miami's last two games with a leg muscle injury, Lionel Messi returned to MLS action on Saturday night, coming off the Herons' substitutes' bench at halftime and scoring the match-winning goal with six minutes to play and adding an assist in an eventual 3-1 victory over the LA Galaxy. With his team leading the defending MLS Cup champions 1-0 at the interval on a Jordi Alba strike, Miami coach Javier Mascherano inserted Messi for Venezuelan winger Telasco Segovia. It took the Argentine World Cup winner time to settle into the contest. Joseph Paintsil then equalized for the visitors just before the hour mark. But sure enough, the GOAT gave his legion of pink-clad worshipers pink-clad at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale the special moment they hoped to see when news broke about an hour before kickoff that Messi was listed as an available sub. Messi delivered it in brilliant individual fashion. On the right side of the field near the Galaxy' penalty box, Luis Suarez sent a backwards pass to Rodrigo De Paul, who squared the ball to Messi standing about 40 yards from the visitors' goal. The 38-year-old suddenly exploded past a defender then slalomed around several more before blasting an unstoppable left-footed shot into the bottom corner of keeper Novak Micovic's net. It was Messi's MLS-leading 19th goal of the regular season, putting him one ahead of Nashville SC striker Sam Surridge. (Nashville visits NYCFC on Sunday.) Suarez added an insurance tally for the hosts in second-half stoppage time off a seeing-eye feed from his former Barcelona running mate: Saturday's result pulled Miami, which claimed the Supporters Shield in 2024, within five points of Eastern Conference pacesetter Philadelphia Union, who lost to the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. However, Messi & friends have played three fewer games. Messi was injured early in an Aug. 2 Leagues Cup contest against Mexican club Necaxa. He missed the Herons' final group game win over Pumas and a 4-1 Aug. 10 loss to Florida rival Orlando City.
