UAE Receives First Batch Of French Rafale Fighter Jets In 'Historic Deal' Worth Dh63.5 Billion

Gulf Insider30-01-2025

The first batch of 80 Rafale fighter jets from France has been handed over to the UAE as part of a 'historic deal' that reflects the strategic partnership between the countries, it was announced on Thursday.
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) received the jets — which are among the most advanced in the world — from French company Dassault Aviation.
This historic Rafale deal, worth 16.6 billion euros (about Dh63.5 billion), is one of the most prominent defence deals in the history of UAE-French relations. It includes the production of 80 fighter jets equipped with the latest defence technologies.
The acquisition of this type of aircraft comes as part of a comprehensive plan to modernise the UAE's defence capabilities, in line with security changes and challenges at the regional and international levels, the MOD said.
The aircraft were received during an official ceremony in Paris, attended by Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Minister of State for Defence Affairs, along with other top Emirati and French officials.
'Our armed forces, thanks to the unlimited support of President Sheikh Mohamed, have achieved a qualitative leap in terms of equipment and modernisation, making them among the most efficient and prepared forces in the region and the world,' Al Mazrouei said.
The strategy of the armed forces focuses on the careful acquisition of advanced weapons and equipment, aligned with the evolving dynamics of future conflicts and technological advancements, he added.
The Rafale aircraft have proven their efficiency in many military operations around the world, said Maj-Gen Rashid Mohammed Al Shamsi, commander of the Air Force.
The UAE's acquisition of these jets supports the building of advanced and integrated armed forces and enhances the state's plans to develop the capabilities of its air force and air defence systems.
The Rafale aircraft are characterised by technologies that enable the implementation of multiple missions such as reconnaissance and attacking land and sea targets with high accuracy, making them a qualitative addition to the UAE Air Force, said Maj-Gen Al Shamsi.
The agreement included an integrated training programme to qualify pilots and technicians.
Al Shamsi said this historic deal came as a result of a careful study of global defence markets and intensive negotiations to obtain the best types of aircraft and air defence systems.
The UAE Armed Forces will continue their efforts to develop their defence systems and provide them with the latest military technologies, he added.
in line with current and future security challenges, pointing out the ministry's commitment to searching for new technologies and products that double the striking power of the Air Force, in a way that serves national interests and enhances the UAE's position as a leading defence force.

US Warns Britain & France Not To Recognize Palestinian State

The US has warned Britain and France against recognizing a Palestinian state at a UN conference later this month, Middle East Eye can reveal. France and Saudi Arabia are set to co-host a major UN conference on the two-state solution beginning on June 17 in New York. France is reportedly gearing up to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state at the conference. MEE understands that France has been lobbying Britain to do so as well. French officials believe the British government is onboard with the plan, according to French media. But Washington privately begun to warn Britain and France against unilaterally recognizing Palestine, sources with knowledge of the matter in the British Foreign Office told MEE. At the same time Arab states are urging them to proceed with the move, sources said. In late May, UN member states held consultations in preparation for the conference during which the Arab Group urged states to recognize Palestinian statehood. The Arab Group said they would measure the success of the conference by whether significant states recognize Palestine, Foreign Office sources added. Click here to read more… Source Zero Hedge

US Refuses Air Cover For European 'Reassurance Force' In Postwar Ukraine

The British and French-led effort to establish a 'coalition of the willing' to stand up to Russia and defend Ukraine just hit another major roadblock, as Bloomberg is reporting Wednesday the US has effectively vetoed a plan to provide American air defenses to back a 'reassurance force' for postwar Ukraine. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been insisting that US-backed air defenses are key to any future permanent settlement plans for ending the war. Western proposals for ending the war have all featured foreign-backed and monitored security guarantees for Ukraine. On this, Starmer had said back in February that 'There must be a US backstop' and that the 'US security guarantee is the only way to effectively deter Russia from attacking Ukraine again.' After Western billions already sunk into keeping Ukraine's military and civic infrastructure afloat, the UK and France are also seeking from President Trump pledges of future air power, and border surveillance and intelligence. The Europeans also envision a strong, permanent security bulwark backed by the United States along NATO's eastern flank. Yet, President Trump has repeatedly warned allies that if NATO countries don't pay their fair share they won't be protected. This despite European leaders as well as some US politicians expressing recent concern that the Atlantic alliance is becoming weaker than ever, and that Article 5 collective defense is in peril. Trump has lashed out at NATO countries for not even meeting their current two percent spending goal while the unfair burden has long fallen United States. 'We appreciate the work that the allies, particularly France and the United Kingdom together with Germany and others have undertaken to develop the coalition of the willing,' US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said at a press breifing Brussels on Wednesday. 'We are counting on all our European allies to continue taking the leadership position in contributing military resources and providing the political capital to make security guarantees a reality.' All of this comes as it was only on Tuesday that Dutch slapped down a proposal to increase defense spending to 3.5% of gross domestic product (GDP), key to NATO's capability targets, in a non-binding motion. Nasdaq Dubai welcomes Mashreq's $500m sukuk listing

Nasdaq Dubai welcomed leading Dubai-based bank Mashreq debut listing on the exchange with the admission of a $500 million sukuk issued by Mashreq Al Islami Sukuk Company. The Trust Certificates, due in 2030, were issued under Mashreq's $2.5 billion Trust Certificate Issuance Programme and are being admitted as a secondary listing following strong demand in the primary market. This marks an important milestone for Mashreq as it expands its access to international capital markets and strengthens its presence in the Islamic finance space. It also reflects Nasdaq Dubai's continued role in connecting regional issuers with a global investor base through a well-regulated and diversified platform. Senior officials from Mashreq, including Ahmed Abdelaal, Group Chief Executive Officer; Joel Van Dusen, Group Head of Corporate & Investment Banking; and Salman Hadi, Group Head of Treasury & Global Markets, attended the market opening ceremony at Nasdaq Dubai to celebrate the listing. The bell was rung by Ahmed Abdelaal in the presence of Hamed Ali, CEO of Nasdaq Dubai and Dubai Financial Market (DFM). On the debut sukuk, Mashreq Chairman Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair said: "This sukuk listing marks an important step in Mashreq's commitment to strengthening the global Islamic finance landscape. It is a clear demonstration of Mashreq's long-term commitment to Islamic finance, the deepening of cross-border capital flows, and the UAE's continued emergence as a global nexus for ethical and Sharia-compliant financing." "Through this programme, we are proud to reinforce investor trust and contribute meaningfully to the maturing of Islamic capital markets," he stated. Abdelaal said the debut listing on Nasdaq Dubai marks a new chapter in Mashreq's capital markets journey. "This sukuk issuance not only attracted strong investor interest, but also affirms our disciplined approach to funding, even in a complex macro environment. As we continue to diversify our capital structure through Sharia-compliant channels, we remain committed to delivering strong fundamentals, market transparency, and sustainable value for all stakeholders," he added. Welcoming the Mashreq listing, Ali said it reflects the bank's growing ambitions in the Islamic finance sector and underscores DFM's role as a leading marketplace that connects regional issuers with global investors. "As Dubai continues to strengthen its capital markets infrastructure, we at DFM remain committed to providing an efficient and transparent platform that supports diverse financing needs and promotes sustainable growth across the financial ecosystem," he stated. With this listing, the total value of sukuk listed on Nasdaq Dubai has reached $97.2 billion, further strengthening the exchange's position as one of the world's largest centres for Islamic fixed income. The overall value of debt securities listed on Nasdaq Dubai now stands at over $140 billion, across 163 issuances, said Ali.
