Plea seeks to curb excessive ticket pricing by multiplexes
Kochi: High court has sought the state govt's stand in a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking judicial intervention to regulate alleged profiteering by multiplex operators through excessive ticket pricing.
A bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji directed the state govt to file a counter affidavit and adjourned the matter to July 1. The petition was filed by G Manu Nair, a resident of Thiruvarppu in Kottayam.
In the petition, Nair alleged that cinema chains routinely inflate ticket prices based on demand, time slot and release status, resulting in exorbitant rates, particularly during the initial week of screening.
He contended that such price fluctuations occur without any public approval or oversight by licensing authorities under the Kerala Cinemas (Regulation) Act, 1958 and its Rules.
The petitioner further pointed out that several Indian states have introduced legal mechanisms to cap cinema ticket rates and ensure affordability. Andhra Pradesh, for instance, imposed upper limits for various theatre classes and mandated a quota of affordable seats. Telangana introduced price caps across seating categories, and Karnataka directed a ceiling of Rs 200 for multiplex tickets. Tamil Nadu has not only instituted a price control regime but also ensured judicial oversight through directions issued by the Madras high court for strict enforcement against overcharging, he added.

Gambling ring bust: 14 held from hotel with Rs 25.3 lakh in Mohali
In a major crackdown on illegal gambling and fraud, the Mohali police raided KC Royal Hotel at Zirakpur and arrested 14 individuals involved in operating a betting and fraud racket. The raid led to the seizure of Rs 25.3 lakh in Indian currency, 19 mobile phones, playing cards, a betting register (net book), seven cars, and one Activa scooter. The arrests were made based on a tip-off received by Station House Officer (SHO) Satinder Singh of Zirakpur police station, who led the raid with his team. 'We received specific information that the owner of KC Royal Hotel, Senti, along with his manager, was luring innocent people with promises of high returns and operating a betting racket on the hotel's third floor,' SSP Hans said. An FIR was registered under sections 3 and 4 of the Gambling Act and Section 318(4) of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita). The arrested individuals were identified as Ravi from Dhakoli, Surinder Singh, Shivam, Anil Kumar and Sunil Kumar, residents of Chandigarh, Vijay Kumar, Arvind Kumar from Abohar, Naveen Kumar from Ganganagar, Ashok Kumar from Panchkula, Sukhjinder Singh from Moga, Pitabeer from Baltana, Subhash Chandra, Ashok Kumar from Panchkula, and Raj Bahadur, a Nepal national. Police are conducting in-depth interrogations, and major revelations are expected during the ongoing investigation, said SSP.

Singer Mangli arrested during drug bust at b'day bash
Hyderabad: Famous Tollywood singer Mangli was arrested on Wednesday after police raided a private birthday party she hosted at Tripura Resort near Irlapalli in Chevella, on the city outskirts. During the raid, police discovered drugs and imported liquor at the venue. Of the 48 guests tested, nine tested positive for drug use. Police also seized foreign liquor from the resort premises. A case has been registered against Mangli and several others under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Additionally, Mangli has been charged with organising the event without obtaining prior permission or necessary clearances. Nearly 50 guests reportedly attended the party, including Mangli's family, industry colleagues, and well-known Telugu personalities.

AP govt to celebrate first anniversary on a grand scale
Vijayawada: The TDP-led NDA government is set to celebrate its first anniversary on a grand scale on Thursday. Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan, ministers, MPs, MLAs, MLCs, officials and a large number of people will participate in the first anniversary programme to be organised in Amaravati. The NDA government assumed charge on June 12, 2024. The government will use the celebratory function as a key platform to showcase its achievements over the past one year. It will also be used to communicate the government's vision and strategic objectives for the next four years, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive development and good governance. In the first anniversary programme, the coalition government is going to highlight its achievements, including distribution of Rs 2,720 crore every month towards pensions to 64 lakh people. The government also issued DSC notification to fill 16,347 teacher posts and conducted tests. Under the Deepam scheme, the state government has been giving three gas cylinders to women free of cost by spending Rs 2,684 crore. The state government, as per its promise, repaired roads at a length of 20,000 km at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore. Coming to the welfare of fishermen, the government allotted Rs 259 crore and distributed Rs 20,000 each during the fishing holiday period. Besides, 203 Anna Canteens were set up and 61 more will come up soon.
