Rob Cross enjoys win and breaks silence after being hit with five-year director ban
Englishman sets off-oche issues aside to progress at Nordic Masters by beating Swede Andreas Harryson 6-4
Battling Rob Cross made a winning return on his first appearance since receiving a five-year ban as a director after his company failed to pay over £400,000 in tax.
News broke on Thursday over the former World Champion's issue away from the oche.
But, as he returned for the Nordic Darts Masters on Friday night, Cross got a success as he defeated Swede Andreas Harryson 6-4 to progress to Saturday's final stages.
The Englishman was delighted to get the win in Denmark and, when asked after the victory about his experiences in Copenhagen, he said: 'Yesterday, I walked 14 and a half miles around the city, so it's been nice and I enjoyed it. It's a great place just to go out, really. Fill your lungs up with a bit of air. I've enjoyed my time here. I enjoyed my time last year and it's always a privilege to come back."
Cross made the final in 2024 and, asked what it would mean to go one better, he said: "Just a great tournament, a great place in the world and the World Series always offers itself. But to win it this weekend, it would mean a lot. I've had a little bit of time off, a few difficulties, but, at the same time, it would mean a lot to me.'
Cross didn't find his best against Harryson, but said: 'I enjoyed the match, I'm not going to lie. I've walked in this weekend, I've just come off of probably two and a half weeks off, I've not really picked them up. A little bit lazy, I suppose. But I needed that. A little bit of a freshen up, but to win that match there, I'll be better tomorrow now. That's 100 per cent.
'I'm where I'm at, you know, if I've not really been playing, where do you (know where your game is? I could have gone out there tonight and hit 120, or I could have gone out there and hit a 48, to be honest. I'm very happy just to get over the line and keep pushing.
'To win this would be fantastic. The crowd's amazing. There's no booing out there, there's only fairness and credit to the Copenhagen people that come out and watch. I appreciate that. That could have been even tougher for me with a few boos, a few whistles.
"That could have really swung the game in his favour, I suppose. Not having that gives me the comfort. We all feel it sometimes when they're not quite going, if the crowd gets on your back, darts can be tough. They are very appreciative, but to win it this week, it would mean a lot to me.'

Gary Lineker laughed at the German reaction to Thomas Tuchel taking England job
Thomas Tuchel's announcement as England boss came as a surprise to many as Gary Lineker was informed of the reaction the German public had upon learning of the football manager's next role Gary Lineker couldn't help but laugh when learning of Germany's general reaction to Thomas Tuchel becoming the new England manager. The ex-Chelsea boss was announced as Gareth Southgate's successor with the Three Lions last October. As only the third foreign manager in England history and first since Fabio Capello left his role in 2012, the decision to appoint the German certainly came as a surprise to some in the footballing world. However, the 51-year-old has enjoyed a winning start to his England career, earning victories over Albania and Latvia in their opening two games of the 2026 World Cup qualifying. The Three Lions return to action on Saturday where they travel to Barcelona to take on Andorra. While there were portions of supporters were delighted with the decision to appoint a manager with the pedigree that Tuchel possesses, there was also blowback – notably from Harry Redknapp, who admitted he was sad the FA didn't choose an Englishman to lead the national team. Wanting to learn the reaction from Germany of their countryman now leading England, Lineker was joined by German journalist Raphael Honigstein on an episode of The Rest Is Football just days after the news Tuchel's appointment had been confirmed. Given the long-standing rivalry that exists between Germany and England, Lineker asked: "Rafa, in Germany, what are they saying? A German coach managing England – what are they saying? I'll be fascinated to know," to which, the Munich-born journalist replied: "Well so far I haven't really seen any big think pieces or big opinions, I think it's just very matter of fact – 'Hooray there's another German manager in a top position.' "That reflects well on German football, it reflects well on German coaching. It's England and Wembley for places which is really seen as something which is sacred and a hallowed turf and so on. And I think people, by large, are just sort of proud that there is a German at the helm of this storied football nation. I think that is the grounds of opinion. "When it goes towards tournaments – and god forbid we play each other in the knockouts, it goes to penalties – I don't know what's going to happen." Before nodding towards a potential final between the two rivals, a laughing Lineker then added: "And in the end, the German always wins – not the Germans." Despite the tradition of rivalry that defined the relationship between Germany and England, Honigstein claimed that Germans don't dislike England as a football country before adding a jibe about their failure to win an international tournament for almost 60 years. "There is no real dislike towards England as a football nation," he said. "If anything, I think it's sort of a mild, positive attitude. We look up to England, we like English football, we sometimes make fun of them when they don't win – which happens not so frequently any more, they win a little too much for my taste. "It's much more good-natured I would say from our perspective - then there's more sort of real animosity for example that we have with the Italians and the Dutch. "England is a much milder rivalry, and of course, it's also easier to have good relations with a nation that doesn't win anything. So that's helped in the last sixty-odd years." It was the journalist's last statement that also left Lineker grinning, before adding: "Well let's hope that a German can change that." Having lost their opening two league fixtures to reigning champions Poole and Plymouth last month, the Capital outfit were under pressure to deliver on home shale against a Cheetahs side - hit by injury and rider unavailability - spearheaded by former Monarch, and legend, Sam Masters. Co-promoter Alex Harkess had spoken prior to the meeting about getting the job done in the early part of the match. However, Monarchs' advantage was a slender two points with just four heats remaining and that was largely down to some exemplary riding by Masters. The 34-year-old Australian, who made 233 appearances in Blue and Gold and a double league winner in 2014 and 2015, went through the card unbeaten scoring an 18-point maximum. Former Monarchs and guests Lasse Fredriksen and Jacob Hook also contributed well, but that was about it for the visitors. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad As for the hosts, who were without skipper Paco Castagna, Victor Palovaara scored 20 for the third consecutive home meeting in what was his final outing at reserve - only Masters getting the better of the Swede in the first race of the evening. Palovaara will move into the main body of the team and take the No.1 berth for Monarchs' next fixture which is away at Oxford on Wednesday, June 18. "I'm going to have to step it up if I'm going to score these high points later in the season," Palovaara said afterwards. "It's good. It just shows how much I love this track and how much fun I'm having coming here. I really enjoy it and it's looking good so far. I'm hoping I can keep it going. I want to be higher up in the the team and now I've scored enough points to be there, so I just need to keep winning heats and stay there." New signing Michael Palm Toft made his debut and scored five including a heat six win when he teamed up with Kye Thomson to deliver a 5-1. This was Palm Toft's first fixture of 2025 so the former Scunthorpe star can be satisfied with his night's work. Thomson, meanwhile, scored handsomely, 12 paid 14 from his six outings and looked on the pace. The victory takes Monarchs off the foot of the Championship and up four places to fifth. Their next home fixture isn't until Friday, June 27 when the Redcar Bears make the trip north from Teesside.
