, the Dronacharya of endgame, showed no mercy against Arjun Erigaisi. Ruthlessness reigned in the fourth round of Norway chess meet in Stavanger on Thursday.
Stunningly, the Norwegian World No.

1 had pointed out the correct 30th move (Qe7) to the world via a confession box during the live webcast. That move would have given Arjun the best chance to draw the game.
Most importantly, Carlsen also explained the logic behind it. When you are a pawn less in the queen, double rook and pawns endgame, it's better to exchange queens first.

However, Arjun allowed a rook trade first — human answer to the pressure on the board and chaos inside.
And the queen exchange never happened. It was just a marginal inaccuracy, but Carlsen turned that into a cardinal mistake.

He went for a rook exchange and played with such beauty and precision that both Stockfish (chess engine) and Caissa (chess goddess) would have doffed their hats to the endgame masterclass from the white side of an English opening game that lasted 48 moves.
It was nigh impossible to stop Carlsen when he played at high level, especially after he drew his previous two classical games against Nakamura and Wei Yi and lost both in the Armageddon.
Carlsen brought his king to the centre against Arjun while facing the checks in the queen and three pawns vs queen and four pawns climax to score three points.
In his only previous game in classical format against Arjun (Wijk aan Zee 2023, Reti, Zukertort Symmetrical), the first grab had happened on the 28th turn. Carlsen had won with black pieces then.

It meant Carlsen moved into the sole lead with six rounds to go in this six-player double round robin elite event. He is on eight points followed by Caruana on 7. The bottom-placed Yi (4) is not too behind in terms of points. Both Gukesh and Arjun are joint fourth with 4.5 points each.
On the women's side, joint leader K Humpy could not capitalise on R Vaishali beating co-leader Anna Muzychuk of Ukraine in Armageddon. Humpy lost in the Armageddon against China's women's world champion Ju Wenjun.
Both Humpy and Muzychuk are on 7 points. Vaishali is sixth and last on 3.5 points.

State to use AI to detect fake applications in UG college admissions

Kolkata: The state higher education department will use an application driven by artificial intelligence (AI) in its centralised admission portal to weed out fake applications for undergraduate college admissions this year. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The system, which was test-piloted during last year's admission, will be deployed with minor modifications this year to detect fake profiles, fake images, fake identities and block them. In 2020, actress Sunny Leone's name featured in the merit list of Asutosh College — she was the highest-scoring candidate for BA (Honours) in English. Investigation revealed the application was fake, a prank that had slipped through the verification process. There have been other instances when names of celebrities, including actors and footballers Messi and Ronaldo, were detected in undergraduate college applications. The higher education department hopes the use of AI tool will help it avoid such embarrassments. "We expect the enhanced AI-driven application programme to improve the integrity and efficiency of the admission process, ensuring that only genuine applications are considered. The use of advanced technology in this manner reflects a significant step forward in combating fraudulent activities during admission," an official said. Using the latest technology, the portal will be able to identify fake candidates by sifting through ID proof, mobile numbers, names and images. Last year, there were over 50 lakh applications from around 4 lakh candidates in the first phase. Using the AI tool, multiple cases were identified where names and images did not match, and they were blocked. According to sources in Bikash Bhavan, multiple cyber cafés were identified where fake profiles were created. "The portal was able to weed out fake applications last year. The number of complaints was minimal. I am confident there will be even fewer fake profiles this year. We have the latest technology that can easily identify if a candidate is genuine or fake and block the fake profiles. We even have a mechanism that can recognise images," said an official. Several college principals acknowledged that the centralised portal had reduced the tiresome job of spotting fake applications. "Earlier, identifying fake applications was a huge challenge. Now, it is being handled efficiently by the centralised system. Inviting applications, sorting, and preparing merit lists — everything is being done by the centralised system," said New Alipore College principal Jaydeep Sarangi.

Adnan Sami addresses public curiosity about his weight loss, dismissing surgery rumors. He reveals his father's illness and a doctor's warning served as a wake-up call, prompting a commitment to change. Guided by a nutritionist's high-protein diet in Houston, Sami shed 120 kg in six months through dedicated lifestyle adjustments, emphasizing discipline over surgical intervention. Adnan Sami 's incredible transformation has long been the subject of public curiosity and speculation. Now, the acclaimed singer and composer is finally telling his side of the story. In a heartfelt conversation, Sami sheds light on the emotional turning point that sparked his weight loss journey and puts an end to rumours about surgical intervention. No Surgery, Just Discipline In his recent appearance on India TV's Aap Ki Adalat with Rajat Sharma, Adnan recalled a turning point in his life that pushed him to begin his weight loss journey. At the time, his father was battling pancreatic cancer and took him to London's Cromwell Hospital for a check-up. The doctor gave a grim warning, telling him that if he continued with his current lifestyle, he might not survive another six months. While the warning initially didn't shake him, it was his father's emotional plea later that night—urging him to change for the sake of his future—that truly hit home. Deeply moved, Adnan made a firm commitment that very night to turn his life around and began working towards a healthier lifestyle. Guided by Nutrition, Driven by Determination The composer and singer clarified that his dramatic weight loss had nothing to do with bariatric surgery or liposuction. Speaking on Aap Ki Adalat, he shared that a skilled nutritionist in Houston designed a high-protein diet plan for him, which helped him shed the extra kilos. For those unaware, the singer had lost around 120 kg in just six months back in 2016, dropping from 230 kg through dedicated lifestyle changes.
