Ten pilgrims from Bihar died and 35 others were injured as their bus rammed into a truck parked on the roadside in West Bengal's Burdwan town on Friday, officials said.Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief over the accident and announced ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased.The pilgrims, who belonged to Motihari in Bihar's East Champaran district, were returning home after visiting Gangasagar in South 24 Parganas district when the accident happened on NH-19 near Phaguipur in Purba Bardhaman district, the officials said.Among the deceased were eight men and two women, they added.The injured persons, including six children, were admitted to the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, officials said."There were 45 people on the luxury bus. Efforts are being made to contact their families," an official said."The pilgrims began their journey from Motihari on August 8. They first visited Deoghar and then went to Gangasagar," he said.A statement issued by the Bihar government said, "The CM has expressed condolences over the casualties in the road accident that took place on the roadside in Burdwan. He is deeply saddened by the deaths of Bihar natives in the incident, and announced ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the immediate family members of the deceased."Besides, the CM also announced Rs 50,000 as compensation for each injured passenger.The CM has also directed the officials to remain in touch with their counterparts in West Bengal and ensure proper treatment for the injured persons.He also asked officials to ensure that bodies of deceased hailing from the state reach their native place in East Champaran, it said.

The plane landed safely and no crew members or passengers were injured in the incident. Tailstrikes refer to instances where the tail of an airplane touches the runway during takeoff or landing. These incidents are deemed serious and are compulsorily reported to the DCGA for investigation and action. This is not the first such instance involving the airline. Earlier in March, another IndiGo Airbus A321's tail struck the runway during landing at Chennai airport. In 2023, the DGCA had charged IndiGo a penalty of Rs 30 lakh after four cases of tailstrikes were reported in six months. The regulator, in its audit, had identified gaps in the airline's engineering procedures and training. The spokesperson added that safety procedures were being adhered to. 'At IndiGo, the safety of our customers, crew, and airplanes is our utmost priority. We are taking all possible attempts to reduce any follow-on effect on our operations with this event,' the spokesperson said. After Saturday's incident, the plane was taken out of service for inspection and repairs. The DGCA will go over technical information, crew members' actions and weather conditions prior to issuing a final report. Examinations of such occurrences usually involve pilot crew simulator checks, engineering inspections and recommending additional correction steps if necessary.

Chandigarh: Budget for the repair of 100 PGI houses in Sector 12 proposed
Recently, information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act showed that 323 houses of different categories of PGI faculty and non-faculty staff have been lying vacant in sectors 12 and 24, Chandigarh, for years, causing the institute an annual financial loss of around Rs 5.5 crore. These houses cover multiple types, including 1, 2, 3, 4, 13D, 13JE, 13JC, 13JFE, 11H, 12H, B1, B2, and C. With many houses vacant, and many employees waiting for official accommodation, and living on rent, the non-allotment of vacant houses has caused not only financial loss to the institute, but also inconvenience to employees. Residential houses in PGI are primarily built for faculty, resident doctors, nursing staff, and other employees, and many are awaiting repairs for years, increasing annual maintenance costs. After the RTI development, a meeting was held early this week by the Priority Committee to discuss the need for repair and maintenance of houses in the PGI residential complex of Sector 12. As per records, engineers from the institute inspected the site in June and the case was highlighted to the committee. The repair work of 100 houses in the complex is expected to be completed in about five to six months. Demand for staff housing in PGI is high, and new doctors and employees often have to rent expensive accommodation outside the campus. Many staff members believe that timely repair and maintenance of these houses would bring them significant relief. Recommendations have been made to speed up the upkeep and allotment process. Proposals include earmarking a separate budget for repairs and undertaking large-scale renovations.

Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini announces grants for cattle welfare in state
KURUKSHETRA: Haryana chief minister (CM) Nayab Singh Saini reaffirmed his government's commitment to cow protection and gaushala development while participating in the Gaushala Fodder Grant Distribution Programme at a private institution in Kurukshetra on the occasion of Janmashtami on Saturday. Expressing happiness at celebrating Lord Krishna's birth anniversary among cow devotees, CM Saini extended his greetings to all cattle rearers and gaushala managers. 'The greatness of the cow has been extensively described in our Vedas. Immediately after our government was formed, we passed the Cow Protection Bill in the state assembly to strengthen this tradition,' he said. Announcing new initiatives, Saini said that Rs 1.80 crore has been allocated to 19 gaushalas in Kurukshetra district for fodder, while Rs 88.50 crore will be distributed across Haryana's gaushalas this year. So far, the state government has already released Rs 358.50 crore for cow fodder support. Highlighting Haryana's progress, the CM informed that over the past decade 686 gaushalas have been registered in the state, housing and nurturing more than four lakh stray cattle. To modernize gaushalas, solar energy plants have been installed in 330 gaushalas, and the process is underway to cover the remaining ones. Additionally, 800 e-rickshaws are being procured to support gaushala operations, and electricity is being provided at a subsidized rate of Rs 2 per unit. CM Saini announced that no stamp duty will be charged on gaushala registries. For healthcare, veterinary officers will conduct weekly visits to gaushalas with over 3,000 cattle, while Veterinary Livestock Development Assistants (VLDA) will serve smaller gaushalas on a weekly basis. The government has also released Rs 8 crore for village cattle sanctuaries and is providing Rs 10 lakh per gaushala to build sheds in 200 selected gaushalas for stray cattle rehabilitation. 'I am happy to share that sheds have already been completed in 51 gaushalas, and funds have been disbursed accordingly,' Saini added. Recognizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's contribution, he praised the implementation of the National Gokul Mission, aimed at preserving and promoting indigenous cow breeds. Under this scheme, Haryana has extended Rs 6.50 crore in grants to 101 gaushalas for essential machinery. Concluding his address, CM Saini said, 'Our government has taken historic steps to promote gaushala development and protect our cattle heritage, ensuring that Haryana continues to lead in cow welfare and preservation.' One-time fee on binola machines reduced by 50% Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini reaffirmed that the state government stands firmly with traders who work tirelessly for Haryana's development and assured that all their issues will be resolved on priority. Responding to their demand, he announced that the one-time fee on binola machines (oil extractor and oil-cake fodder making machine) has been reduced from Rs 42,000 to Rs 21,000. The CM made this announcement while interacting with members of the Haryana Oil Mills Association at the Multi Art Culture Centre in Kurukshetra.
