Tuyut gets new Mini FoSCC to boost forest compliance, enforcement in rural Sarawak

MIRI (May 9): The Sarawak Forest Department has launched a new Mini Forest One Stop Compliance Centre (FoSCC) in Tuyut to enhance sustainable forest management and strengthen enforcement in remote areas.
The ceremony was officiated by the Forest Department Sarawak director Datu Hamden Mohammad, who expressed gratitude to all attendees and partners involved in establishing the facility.
'The presence of this mini FoSCC is highly meaningful in supporting the JHS' continuous efforts to manage forests sustainably and with integrity,' he said.
The newly launched facility will serve as a vital platform for license holders and forest officers, streamlining processes related to compliance, enforcement, and timber audit.
First introduced in 2017, the FoSCC concept decentralises forest department operations, particularly in rural areas, to reduce the need for long-distance travel among stakeholders.
The Tuyut branch is part of a broader initiative under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which includes the upgrading of five FoSCCs. These upgraded centres feature mobile container-based offices equipped with solar power, clean water supply, basic furniture, and ICT facilities.
'This initiative also aims to address compliance gaps and prevent revenue leakages in forest revenue management while improving environmental conservation overall,' Hamden added.
He stressed that regular patrols, transparency, and strong governance remain central to the department's efforts to combat illegal logging and promote good forestry practices.
To date, 30 FoSCCs and six Forest Checking Stations (FCS) are operational and play a key role in daily enforcement and licensing activities.
Hamden expressed hope that the new facility would benefit both the department and the surrounding community by promoting more efficient and responsible forest management.
'Let us continue to work hand in hand – government agencies, local communities, and all stakeholders – to safeguard Sarawak's forests for future generations,' he said.

Lintas badly needs road upgrade: Phoong

Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 Text Size: Phoong also proposed the construction of an express lane connecting the Inanam flyover directly to Kota Kinabalu International Airport to avoid dangerous lane merging, similar to infrastructure seen in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Kota Kinabalu: State Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe called for urgent federal action to upgrade Jalan Lintas, describing it as a traffic accident black spot that poses serious safety risks and can no longer be ignored. In response to viral reports of multiple fatal accidents, Phoong, who is also Luyang Assemblyman, said Jalan Lintas as one of the city's busiest highways, is severely outdated and no longer meets public needs. Advertisement He said the road has not kept pace with rapid urbanisation, particularly in areas like Luyang, Sembulan, Kolombong and Lintas, which has led to uncontrolled additions of exits and U-turns that worsen safety conditions. He stressed the urgent need for upgrading works and urged the Federal Government to include Jalan Lintas in the next 13th Malaysia Plan. 'Locations near Khidmat and the Iramanis Starbucks are high-risk areas frequently referred to online as 'death U-turn' zones due to the alarming frequency of accidents and viral videos of collisions. Phoong noted that the last major upgrade to Jalan Lintas took place a decade ago under the 11th Malaysia Plan, when several U-turn and intersection flyovers were constructed. Advertisement 'Since then, the population and number of vehicles using the road have doubled, and the surrounding areas have continued to develop rapidly,' he said, in a statement. Phoong also proposed the construction of an express lane connecting the Inanam flyover directly to Kota Kinabalu International Airport to avoid dangerous lane merging, similar to infrastructure seen in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. He has engaged with relevant agencies to submit a comprehensive proposal for Jalan Lintas upgrades under RMK13. He called on the Sabah Public Works Department (JKR) to push the project forward with strong justification and ensure it is given high priority. 'The road upgrade must be integrated with proper public transport planning to match the pace of development in Kota Kinabalu and surrounding areas. 'The time for planning is over and further delays will only continue to endanger lives and hinder progress in the city,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? He mentioned that the project was originally scheduled for completion in May, but it encountered a minor delay due to the rainy weather earlier this year. Chieng revealed that he raised the funding for Phase 2 during the recent State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting. 'As we are set to complete hase 1 of the project in August, we require phase 2 to bring the project to fruition. The design, proposal, and working paper originate from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sibu and have received approval from DID Sarawak. 'During the (recent) DUN sitting session, I brought up this topic, and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian responded, stating that for the second phase of this project, the DID is putting up the submission under the Sarawak government (for) RMK13 (13th Malaysia Plan), Rolling Plan 1 in 2026, with the project costing RM56.6 million,' he said. Chieng made the remarks to reporters during a sacrificial meat distribution programme at Masjid Al-Muhajirin Sentosa, attended by SUPP Bukit Assek chairman Datuk Chieng Buong Toon and mosque chairman Ramli Hussin. He also announced a second project request for upgrading the drainage system and associated works in the Jerrwit and Ek Dee areas, including Kampung Saujana. 'With the project cost of RM41.75 million, it will be put out under RMK13, rolling plan 2. 'We are thrilled that Bukit Assek (constituency) will benefit from these two projects as well,' he said. drainage project infrastructure joseph chieng lead Taman Rimba Bukit Lima

Bung Moktar calls for more inclusive implementation of People's Income Initiative

Bung during his recent visit to Tawau Market. KOTA KINABALU (June 6): Kinabatangan Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin has raised concerns over the implementation of the People's Income Initiative (IPR), saying it remains inadequate in addressing the pressing needs of rural communities in Sabah. He pointed out that although the IPR is a key policy under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) and was well-intended, its on-ground execution in the state's interior has yet to reach the level needed to make meaningful impact. 'Sabah's hardcore poverty rate stands at 1.2 per cent, six times higher than the national average of 0.2 per cent. This is not just a statistic, but a stark indicator of the developmental gap that persists,' he said in a statement today, after visiting Tawau Market recently. Bung stressed that many Sabahans, particularly single mothers, the elderly and youth in rural areas, continue to live in hardship due to limited access to opportunities and targeted assistance. He urged the Ministry of Economy to restructure the delivery of the IPR so that it becomes more inclusive and better aligned with the unique realities faced by Sabah's rural population. He also proposed that in-person outreach initiatives be prioritised, involving physical engagements at community halls, schools, places of worship and other grassroots centres, in close collaboration with village heads, the Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs) and local NGOs. 'The government must go to the people, not the other way round,' he said. Bung added that federal policies like the IPR must be tailored to reflect the actual context of communities on the ground, taking into account geographical challenges, cultural differences and economic limitations specific to Sabah. 'It is time the government stops viewing Sabah merely as the poorest state, and instead begins recognising it as a strategic development partner capable of making a significant contribution to the nation's future,' he said. 'I believe that with a strengthened and well-targeted implementation of the IPR, Sabah can break free from the cycle of poverty and move towards a more prosperous future,' he added.
