Tuyut gets new Mini FoSCC to boost forest compliance, enforcement in rural Sarawak

Hamden signs a plaque to officiate the event while others look on. MIRI (May 9): The Sarawak Forest Department has launched a new Mini Forest One Stop Compliance Centre (FoSCC) in Tuyut to enhance sustainable forest management and strengthen enforcement in remote areas. The ceremony was officiated by the Forest Department Sarawak director Datu Hamden Mohammad, who expressed gratitude to all attendees and partners involved in establishing the facility. 'The presence of this mini FoSCC is highly meaningful in supporting the JHS' continuous efforts to manage forests sustainably and with integrity,' he said. The newly launched facility will serve as a vital platform for license holders and forest officers, streamlining processes related to compliance, enforcement, and timber audit. First introduced in 2017, the FoSCC concept decentralises forest department operations, particularly in rural areas, to reduce the need for long-distance travel among stakeholders. The Tuyut branch is part of a broader initiative under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which includes the upgrading of five FoSCCs. These upgraded centres feature mobile container-based offices equipped with solar power, clean water supply, basic furniture, and ICT facilities. 'This initiative also aims to address compliance gaps and prevent revenue leakages in forest revenue management while improving environmental conservation overall,' Hamden added. He stressed that regular patrols, transparency, and strong governance remain central to the department's efforts to combat illegal logging and promote good forestry practices. To date, 30 FoSCCs and six Forest Checking Stations (FCS) are operational and play a key role in daily enforcement and licensing activities. Hamden expressed hope that the new facility would benefit both the department and the surrounding community by promoting more efficient and responsible forest management. 'Let us continue to work hand in hand – government agencies, local communities, and all stakeholders – to safeguard Sarawak's forests for future generations,' he said.

The goal is to inspire students to be better citizens no matter what career they pursue. 'I'm going into engineering, so at first, like, I didn't really think that law and judiciary really mattered to me, but he did, like, spark in us a desire to know more, and to be more active, like, voters and participants in the law, and this is an excellent way to be a more active participant in the law,' said Josiah Hazlewood, JHS senior. 'Not everybody is going to be an author, not everybody is going to design buildings, not everybody is going to be able to produce movies, but everyone has to be a citizen, and that's why this is really, really important,' said William G. Keczkemethy, JHS Constitution Team Coach. 'Every person should learn about the constitution, and unfortunately studies have shown that the public's knowledge about the constitution, and about the branches of the government has declined, so I'm excited to see that these kids are excelling,' said Shelly Dreyer, Mo. Joplin School District starts peer learning summit for educators

JOPLIN, Mo. — The Joplin School District has launched its first ever peer-to-peer learning opportunity for educators. The 'Joplin Connect Summit' highlights teachers already on staff – and how they can share their experience with others. Sessions Friday involved things like math – software – and the role technology plays in schools. Having the expert within the school district also means it's easier to follow up if there are questions down the road. 'They're within walking distance for everyone in the building. Or an email. Or a quick phone call. It's going to build that community you want in a high school, and that's the secondary part,' said JHS Principal Dr. Randy Oliver. Middle and high school staff members were part of sessions at the high school – while pre and elementary teachers worked out of East Middle School and Soaring Heights Elementary. Joplin High School introduces cell phone lockers aimed to boost student focus

JOPLIN, Mo. — A new option at Joplin High School is hoping to focus attention on classwork and away from distractions. 'Teachers have been starting to enforce us to put them in our lockers and to lock them up during class,' said Isaac Yust, JHS junior. Joplin High School junior Isaac Yust is ok with not using his cell phone during class. He says it helps get more work done – not the case in the past when he's seen fellow students scrolling at their desk. 'They would just, you know, just scroll through their social medias or whatever, and not listen to the teachers,' said Yust. All classrooms on campus now have the cell phone lockers. It's a clear plastic box with individual locks and keys. 'In class, we have a lot of students who pull their phones out. I mean, just non stop kind of and so with the locker, it's another step for us to kind of encourage them to use their brain and focus on the content of class and not be on the phone or checking the phone or looking at the phone,' said Rebecca Olivares, JHS teacher. Teacher Rebecca Olivares says the project is one more way to help separate teens from outside concerns, boosting the learning process. 'We see our students are much less likely to be able to focus for extended grades and time. It's distracting. It causes issues between students, you know, with the social media use,' said Olivares. It can also cut down on temptations to cheat. 'There are so many apps, you know, where you just take a picture and it tells you the answer to the problem. And so that causes problems for our students. Because they can't, they leave our room not really understanding,' said Olivares. Joplin High School has had a policy banning use of cell phones during class time for several years. They added the cell phone lockers when students returned from Christmas break this year. Couple wanted to adopt one shelter dog — but fell for three of them. ‘So grateful'

A couple wanted one Florida shelter dog — then adopted three of them. 'It was an incredible thing to watch a family come in, meet one dog, then fall in love with two others, too,' Samantha Ahnen, community engagement manager for the Jacksonville Humane Society, told McClatchy News via email. 'We are so grateful to folks like this family who open their hearts and homes to homeless pets, especially those who are older and have some health concerns.' One of the dogs, Piccolo, got a fresh start after he landed at the shelter in early February. The 'special' dog needed a home after his previous family couldn't provide adequate medical care. He didn't have most of his teeth and was in rough shape. 'Piccolo was 12-years-old, his fur was severely matted, and his tongue always stuck out to the side,' the shelter wrote Feb. 18 on Facebook. Over time, the shelter believed he would be an ideal candidate for its Senior Spotlight, a social media series that sometimes highlights older dogs waiting for new owners. 'Piccolo is a very sweet and enthusiastic pup,' Ahnen wrote in her email. 'Despite his age, Piccolo has an adventurous personality and loves going on long walks, playing, and making new human friends.' But Piccolo never made it into a Senior Spotlight post. Instead, his luck changed when he caught the eye of two shelter visitors. 'One day, a lovely couple visited JHS looking to adopt a small dog,' the humane society wrote. 'Little did they know they would leave with THREE. These folks not only adopted Piccolo, but also 9-year-old Max and 15-year-old Victor.' Max and Victor had arrived at the shelter after their previous families 'made the selfless decision' to surrender them, helping them get proper medical care, according to Ahnen. They are described as 'lovable and social pups' who have health conditions but defy expectations for older dogs. The dogs' heartwarming adoption resonated with several social media users. While some praised the couple for giving the trio a home, others said the good news made them emotional. 'Awww, I'm not crying, you're crying. Happy tears, here,' a Facebook user posted. 'Thankful to this lovely couple for giving Piccolo, Max, and Victor the opportunity to live out their golden years in a loving home.' 'Everyone at JHS was misty-eyed the day these 3 were adopted,' Ahnen wrote.
