Even Volkswagen Is Doing Horsepower Subscriptions Now

The latest car news, reviews, and features. Subscriptions are coming for us all, in every aspect of life, and all we can do is avoid them. That just became a little tougher for owners of Volkswagen's smallest EV, the ID.3, in the U.K. See, we're used to hearing about subscriptions for improved performance and creature comforts on luxury cars, but VW's trialing BMW and Mercedes-Benz's greatest hits of consumer-hostile policies and gating an additional 27 horsepower behind a $22.30 monthly payment on the ID.3. Alternatively, owners can shell out $878 to unlock that power permanently, for the life of the vehicle. This news comes courtesy of AutoExpress , and it's alarming for several reasons. First, again, the ID.3 isn't exactly a bargain, starting at the equivalent of $41,770, but it's also no Mercedes EQE. Second, as the article points out, the car is registered at 228 hp stock, which affects insurance rates, even though owners only get 201 hp before subscribing. So, you're paying a penalty on your insurance premium based on power that you can only access if you give Volkswagen yet more money every month. This monthly fee also lifts torque from the standard 195 lb-ft to 228 lb-ft, and VW says that the increase in output doesn't impact range—so at least there's that. The optional software upgrade applies to all trims of the ID.3 except for the speedy GTX variant, which has around 320 horsepower and costs $21,600 more. All told, that's roughly $63K—for VW's smallest EV! And you thought the Golf R was pricey. The more I learn about this thing, the less sad I am that it's not offered in the States. Side note: This is a $63,000 car. Hendryk Meyer/Volkswagen The best outcome we can hope for in these cases is that the outcry against it becomes so loud that VW relents. That's worked to some degree on this side of the pond, with BMW's heated-seat policies. But the retractions don't last forever, and automakers are pretty much set on biding their time until software-locking everything is normalized, and they can get away with all of it. Got tips? UK Proms event in Falmouth announced as 'cancelled' and website taken down

Uncertainty surrounds a two-night event scheduled to take place in Falmouth this September, following unconfirmed rumours that the organising company may be in difficulty. In May it was announced that the UK Proms in the Park 2025 tour would arrive in Falmouth for two nights of music at Pendennis Castle. The weekend was to feature the UK Dance Anthems Orchestra on Friday, September 5, hosted by Radio 1 DJ Arielle Free, and the UK Proms Orchestra on Saturday, September 6, hosted by Rob Rinder. However, Pendennis Castle posted on its Facebook page today (Saturday) to say that event had been cancelled. It said: 'We have been made aware that the promoter for the Night at the Proms has gone into liquidation, and unfortunately the event has been cancelled. 'Pendennis is only the third party hire, and sadly we have very little information other than to signpost you to the UK Proms. 'If we receive any further updates, we will keep you informed.' There are also many unhappy people on Facebook who have bought tickets and are unsure whether they will be getting a refund. One person, who booked through the Hall for Cornwall website, said she had received an email saying the event had been cancelled, adding that a second email followed to say a refund had been processed. However, others who bought tickets through different methods said they had not been notified of any event cancellation. The event's website, has been taken down and the event Facebook page, UK Proms in the Park, no longer exists. The company behind the event is UKAC Productions, but their website, also no longer exists. Companies House lists the directors for UKAC Productions Limited as being Justin Klekot and Peter Metcalfe, both who currently show up as still active. They were both quoted in May's event press release as being UK Proms directors and co-founders. However, a third director, Holly Teague, who was quoted in the press release as being UK Proms artistic director and co-founder, resigned on July 23 this year. The Packet has attempted to contact the organisers via Eventbrite, where the event remains listed but 'sold out'. We have also attempted to contact the PR company publicising the event for further clarification on the situation and advice on refunds should the events be cancelled. A voicemail has been left on the phone number provided, but the email address comes back undeliverable. U KAC Productions is described on Eventbrite as a 'UK based production company who primarily specialise in all genres of orchestral music and concerts at iconic historical locations.' It goes on to add: 'The Production company are the organisers of the UK Proms Tour and the owners of the UK Proms Orchestra, The Dance Anthems Orchestra, The Horror Ensemble and 3 Tenors.'

Kendrick Lamar's Streaming Smashes Return — But Which One Is More Impressive?

Kendrick Lamar is one of the top-performing rap artists in America when it comes to sales, as his fans seem much more willing to purchase his music than many other stars in the field. While sales of both his albums and singles play a large role in his continued success, streaming activity may be even more responsible for his presence on the Billboard charts. Several of Lamar's recent smashes return to streaming-only rankings in the United States, and he climbs on multiple tallies dedicated to the consumption metric. '30 for 30" with SZA is Back Two Lamar tracks find their way back to streaming-only tallies this frame. Technically, the higher-rising of the two is '30 for 30.' His tour partner SZA recruited him for the track, which reappears at No. 25 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs tally. 30 weeks into its life on the most competitive of all the streaming rankings that focus on R&B, hip-hop and rap, the cut barely makes it back as it lands in last place. 'Not Like Us' Returns to the Main Streaming Chart 'Not Like Us,' which may go down as Lamar's most famous and celebrated tune, is back on the Streaming Songs chart this week. In its sixty-first frame, the Drake diss tune reappears in last place at No. 50. While that is a much lower position than '30 for 30' manages on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs roster, it may be more impressive that 'Not Like Us' can be found on the Streaming Songs tally. The chart isn't focused on just one or several styles, which makes it that much more competitive. Also, 'Not Like Us' is much older than '30 for 30,' so the fact that it once again ranks as one of the 50-most-played tunes of any style or language throughout the United States is quite the feat. Kendrick Lamar Owns 20% of the Streaming List 'Not Like Us' is one of two tracks by Lamar that appear on the general Streaming Songs roster, as 'Luther,' another duet with SZA, rises two spaces to No. 31. When it comes to the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs tally, however, Lamar is far more successful this time around. He fills five spaces, occupying 20% of the list. His roundup includes 'Luther' with SZA, 'Not Like Us,' 'TV Off' with Lefty Gunplay, 'All the Stars,' yet another smash with SZA, and finally '30 for 30.' Those tracks appear at Nos. 3, 10, 17, 21 and 25, respectively.
