Kansas State Football Preview 2025: Wildcats Due for a College Football Playoff Run

Miami Herald17-06-2025
As a program, Kansas State is way overdue to be in the College Football Playoff.Chris Klieman has been terrific since taking over in 2019. The Wildcats went 5-7 in 2018, the new guy came in, and - let's throw out 2020; it was a weird time - he's pulling off winning seasons, won three bowls in the last four years, and …This year, Kansas State should be good enough to earn its way into the CFP.

It started last season 7-1, had relatively easy games against Houston and Cincinnati, two battles against Arizona State and Iowa State, and it would've been in had it closed 3-1. But it went 1-3.The 2022 team would've been in an expanded CFP, thanks to beating TCU for the Big 12 title, but that's back in the old days of the four-team version. Instead, the Wildcats went to the Sugar Bowl and got walloped by Alabama.
The 2012 team would've made a 12-team College Football Playoff. The 2011 team would've been in the discussion, and if you want to go old school, Kansas State would've at least been really, really close to ten CFPs between 1993 to 2003 if the current format had been in place. It'll be hard for every Big 12 team to make it through the schedule without some bumps. It's not like getting through the SEC or Big Ten, but there isn't a week off in the Big 12 season. It's not impossible, though, for a team that should be as good as 2025 Kansas State.
Klieman has built up the team over the last six years. It's consistently good, and now in the portal era, he and his staff have been able to fill in the gaps with the right guys who should instantly fit.Kansas State is one of the best programs that haven't enjoyed the playoff spotlight. That might change very, very soon. Kansas State Offense BreakdownKansas State Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season

Ohio State football black stripe alert: Defensive end becomes part of the 'brotherhood'

We're just a little over two weeks before the start of the Ohio State football season, and that means there's still time for some black stripes to be shed. Sure enough, we had a couple of those occur on Wednesday, when two incoming transfers became official members of the brotherhood by shedding their black stripes. One of those was North Carolina defensive end transfer Beau Atkinson. He was a force coming off the edge for the Tar Heels last year and should be counted on heavily in the rotation at defensive end for an OSU team looking to replace some key starters off the defensive line from last season -- one that was a key group that helped lead the Buckeyes to a College Football Playoff national championship. "Appreciate y'all welcoming me in the last couple of months. Shoutout rushmen, shoutout coach J (Larry Johnson), all the boys. Let's keep working," Atkinson said in a short ceremony. "Go Bucks!" We'll continue to keep an eye on any more black stripes that go into the garbage can as we make our way through the last couple of weeks of fall camp and on towards the titanic clash with No. 1 Texas on Aug. 30. LSU football coordinator says veteran wide receiver can take LSU's offense to next level

LSU football needs to up its explosive play rate in 2025. LSU ranked No. 25 nationally with 431.5 yards, but not much of that yardage came from the big play. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was effective in the quick game and intermediate areas, but LSU lacked the personnel to push the ball down the field. LSU's lack of a run game played a part but LSU didn't have the speed on the outside to run by defensive backs. Chris Hilton does, though. Hilton finally got back to full health in LSU's final two games of 2024 and it added another element to LSU's offense. Hilton combined for 218 yards and three touchdowns vs. Oklahoma and Baylor and LSU's passing game looked like a complete product. Hilton is gearing up for year five at LSU. And with an offseason of good health, a true breakout year could be in store. Hilton i entering year five at LSU. After a healthy offseason, Hilton is staring at a career year. LSU offensive coordinator Joe Sloan is ready to see Hilton's full impact. "I think you can look at the last couple games last year, our ability to attack vertically really changes when he's out there," Sloan said. Hilton averages 21.2 yards per catch in his career at LSU. Even when the consistency hasn't been there, the big play potential has. "Being able to push the ball down the field is a huge thing. Chris has been consistent. I think he has a great attitude, great body language and is attacking every day," Sloan said. Hilton signed with LSU in 2021 -- the same class as Nussmeier. Ed Orgeron was still head coach when Hilton signed his letter of intent. Hilton was a four-star recruit and No. 79-ranked player in the class. He's talented, but injuries have prevented Hilton from being a top contributor on a weekly basis. "He's going to play really good football. I've been excited for him. I know he's been through a lot," Sloan said. LSU's offense needs to take another step if it hopes to reach the College Football Playoff. The Tigers can't do that without an explosive passing game. "When safeties come down, we need to be able to push the ball down the field. And Chris absolutely helps us. Because ultimately it's about scoring points. It's not just about yards, right? Yards is one thing. But we've got to score points. And that comes from, you know, explosive – a lot of times it comes from explosive play touchdowns. And he definitely gives us the opportunity to do that," Sloan said.

5 College Football Bounceback Teams to Watch in 2025: Who's Ready to Rebound?

Bad schedules, bad injuries, bad luck, bad personal changes. It happens to the best of teams, and college football fans will usually move past one down almost never accept two in a row. If a program is really that good, it proves that past success wasn't a blip, gets over problems in a flash, and then everything is back to five teams have all been fantastic over recent seasons, and all five struggled mightily last year. They're all about to bounce back this season. dd 5. Alabama - Alabama 2025 Preview It's all relative. One college football team's clunker is another's dream season. At almost anywhere else, if you go 9-3 in the regular season and come within a whisker of making the College Football Playoff, you've done something right. At Alabama, the panic sirens go Bryant himself could've taken over the Tide after Nick Saban, and there would've been a tough transition to deal with. On the plus side, the Vanderbilt loss was a blip, the Tennessee loss was close, and any year Bama blows out LSU and beats Auburn by two touchdowns is a the second year under Kalen DeBoer, the team is good enough to not just get to the CFP but win it all. (But, just getting into the tournament would be a bounceback year.) 4. Washington - Washington 2025 Preview After playing for the national title in the 2023 season, 2024 was supposed to be a down year, to a lost quarterback Michael Penix Jr., along with almost all the stars from the high-powered offense, as head coach Kalen DeBoer took his talents to off a massive year at Arizona, head coach Jedd Fisch stepped in, started the rebuild, and it was the program's second losing season since 2009, including a brutal loss to Washington State and a tough bowl loss to Louisville in the final won't be a return to the success of two years ago, but Fisch did a great job through the portal, he has a potential star in quarterback Demond Williams, and the schedule has a base of six almost-certain wins to build off of. 3. Florida State - Florida State 2025 Preview The Florida State football program let 2023 beat it the rough finish and heartbreak of not making the College Football Playoff, a tough loss to Georgia Tech in Ireland became an early breaking point in a brutal 2-10 season - the program's worst since going 1-10 in Seminoles won't bounce all the way back, but if they can pull off a win over Alabama in the opener ...Even if that doesn't happen, split the dates with Miami and Clemson, and there's a real shot FSU could be playing for the ACC title. 2. Oklahoma - Oklahoma 2025 Preview This needs to be more like a breakthrough season for head coach Brent Venables than a bounceback. With two 6-7 seasons wrapped around a 10-3 run in 2023 that wasn't as strong as the record made it appear, it's time for Oklahoma to be a player the second half of the schedule is brutal, and Michigan comes to Norman in Week 2, but it's Oklahoma. It's supposed to beat the great teams, and this year's version has the talent to do it. 1. Utah - Utah 2025 Preview Utah was going to walk right into the Big 12 like it owned the place, go to the College Football Playoff, and all the success from the Kyle Whittingham era in the Pac-12 was going to transfer over. But instead of bouncing back from a disappointing 8-5 2023, it clunked with a 5-7 four different quarterbacks see meaningful time was part of the problem, and now that's solved by getting Devon Dampier from New Mexico. He's just the highest-profile skill star from a tremendous haul of parts for the D will be fantastic, the O will be far better, and after losing four games by one score, here comes the pivot. This will be the season last year's was supposed to be. Related: 5 College Football Teams That Will Surprise in 2025: Who Could Be This Year's Indiana? © 2025 The Arena Group Holdings, Inc.
