Canucks shock Stars with 3 goals in final minute, OT win
The Vancouver Canucks woke up late during their game against the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night, and their Western Conference opponent paid the price.
The Stars had already clinched a playoff spot and had hopes of catching the Winnipeg Jets for first in the Central Division. The Canucks, whose playoff hopes were already on the ropes, were set to hit a major roadblock with another defeat.
Vancouver trailed 5-2 with one minute left in the third period. Somehow, their fortunes changed rather quickly.
Aatu Raty got one past Casey DeSmith to make it a two-goal game. Moments later, Pius Suter added more pressure on Dallas with a goal of his own. Suter followed up with another score with seven seconds remaining in regulation.
Just like that, the game was tied.
Vancouver's momentum continued to build in the overtime period, and nearly four minutes into the extra frame, Kiefer Sherwood scored his 18th goal of the season to give the Canucks the victory. Sherwood took a pass from Connor Garland from behind the net to deliver the game-winning goal.
The Canucks won 6-5.
"Says a lot about the group," Sherwood said. "'Gar' just made an absolute crazy play. Kind of felt like slow motion, got his head up and put it on my tape."
Vancouver became the first NHL team to score three times in the final minute of regulation. Each score came without their goalie on the ice.
"That's got to be one up there," Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet said. "I loved the fight, obviously, in the third period. To do that is a character win for a lot of guys, for the team.
"My son texted me – 'You looked like last year's team in the third.'"
The Canucks won the Pacific Division last year but have nearly fallen out of playoff contention altogether. The team is 36-29-13 with 85 points.
The Stars are four points behind the Jets for the top spot in the Central Division.
Stars captain Jamie Benn called the loss "unacceptable."
"That game should have been wrapped up," Benn said. "We should have found a way to get it done there."

VANCOUVER - Tristan Blackmon's pre-game meal included some unusual sides on Sunday — pickle juice, caffeine pills and Red Bull. After battling a gastrointestinal illness that took out about half of the Vancouver Whitecaps squad earlier in the week, the veteran defender was ready to ingest whatever it took to get his energy levels back ahead of a matchup with his team's regional rivals, the Seattle Sounders. The additions worked. Blackmon was a force as the 'Caps (10-1-5) blanked the Sounders 3-0. 'It was weird circumstances. I didn't train all week. I trained the day before the game because I wasn't feeling that great,' Blackmon said of the lead up. 'But I just told the staff that I wanted to be there and help the guys out as much as I could. 'Definitely got a little winded towards the end of the game, but happy we got the result.' The result extended Vancouver's club-record unbeaten streak in Major League Soccer play to 11 games (6-0-5). The 'Caps will look to stretch the mark further on Saturday when they visit the Columbus Crew (7-3-7). Players and staff continued to recover this week, but the team was able to train more this week, said head coach Jesper Sorensen. 'We can see in training sessions, (players) have more energy now, and they get a little better every day,' he said. 'We can see it in the faces and the eyes … I think that everybody looks a little bit better than they did a week ago. And, yeah, they couldn't look any worse anyway, so it could only go one direction.' Vancouver announced Thursday that it will be without defender Sam Adekugbe for the rest of the season after he tore his Achilles tendon while playing for Canada on Tuesday. The club will also miss four players to international duty come Sunday. Forward Jayden Nelson and midfielder Ali Ahmed are with Canada as the team prepares for its Gold Cup opener against Honduras in Vancouver on Tuesday. Striker Brian White and midfielder Sebastian Berhalter are with the U.S. team for the same tournament. The Whitecaps will get four players back from international duty, though. Peja Stojakovic on honest reason Lakers defeated Kings in 2002 WCF Perhaps the most classic series that the Shaquille O'Neal-Kobe Bryant-led Los Angeles Lakers ever played was the 2002 Western Conference finals. In that series, they went up against a very talented Sacramento Kings team that had spent the past few years building a squad that could topple them at the most important time of year. The Kings weren't just talented — they were ahead of their time. They were one of the first NBA teams to play modern-day "pace and space" basketball at a time when the league was hopelessly infected with stagnant, slowdown basketball. The 2002 West finals went back and forth, and in the end, the Lakers prevailed in Game 7 in overtime by six points. To this day, the Sacramento area still hasn't gotten over that loss, and of course, they still blame the referees who officiated Game 6 at Staples Center for allegedly manipulating the results in L.A.'s favor. But Peja Stojakovic, the sharpshooting starting small forward on that Sacramento team, has a simpler explanation for why his team lost. But if we're being honest and fair as athletes, we missed a lot of shots, a lot of free throws. We didn't secure defensive rebounds when we needed to… So without going too deep into anything else — because sports always have those moments we look back on, like Game 6 — those moments leave a mark on our careers. But I truly believe that, as a team, we played better basketball the following year. We were more complete and more mature." In that seventh game, the Kings shot an embarrassing 16-of-30 from the free throw line. Stojakovic, who was arguably the NBA's best pure shooter back then, went just 3-of-12 from the field, and with time running down in the fourth quarter, he choked. With under 15 seconds to go and Los Angeles leading by one point, Hedo Türkoğlu fed a wide-open Stojakovic in the corner. The latter released a 3-pointer, but it hit nothing but air and went straight into O'Neal's arms. Referee conspiracy or no referee conspiracy, the Kings only have themselves to blame for losing that game and not winning the NBA championship.
