A Local's Guide to the Perfect Tokyo Experience
Transcript
I'm Melinda Jo, a food writer based in Tokyo
for more than 15 years.
Over that time, I've helped a lot
of people navigate this confusing
but beautiful city that we call Tokyo.
Today, I'm gonna curate my perfect Tokyo experience,
looking at a number of recommendations from the internet,
but ultimately I would like to take you
to some places off the beaten track.

[bouncy music]
When you come to Tokyo, of course you have to eat sushi.
Tokyo is the birthplace of Nigiri sushi,
which is the kind of sushi that we all know and love.
We have so many options here in Tokyo from your cheap eats,
standing sushi
or the Kaiten sushi, which is the revolving sushi bar
to the little neighborhood run
mom and pop style sushi restaurants,
and of course the high end Omakase style sushi restaurants.
When you're looking for sushi in Tokyo,
you're gonna see a ton of recommendations,
especially concentrated around Oshiage
where the old fish market was.
So one of the main ones will be Sushizanmai
which is of course a very solid chain.
My recommendation is Sushi Kadowaki in Ginza.
It's a relatively newly open space,
and the reason I love it is that it's traditional style,
but with innovation,
and you have a very, very charming sushi chef
that makes you feel very comfortable.
[both speaking in Japanese]
Of course, this is an Omakase course
so it's all chef selection, seasonal,
and whatever the chef thinks is best on the day.
One of the things that's really special is how he uses fish
that is not actually found in a lot of other restaurants.
Instead of getting the fish from the market,
he has direct relationships with fishermen
and with special distributors.
Mm!

There's only one way to take in
the staggering scale of Tokyo,
and that's with a view from above.
Let's take a look at what the internet says
for recommended views.
Alright, yeah, Mori Tower in Roppongi of course,
a great choice.
Oh, the metropolitan building in Shinjuku.
That's a great idea, especially if you want
to get a view without having to pay an entrance fee.
So if I'm going to pick a place with a view,
I feel like we should also have some time to enjoy that view
with a great drink.
And so my pick is the Ritz Carlton Tokyo.
For me, the bar at the Ritz Carlton Tokyo achieves
the trifecta of great location, wonderful view,
and world-class cocktails.
Also, it opens at 3:00 PM
and I'm a big fan of day drinking, so this is my choice for
where to go when you wanna have an afternoon tipple
and watch the sunset, I'm gonna meet my friend, producer,
Erico Miagawa
and we're going to have some drinks mixed
by one of my favorite bartenders in Tokyo, Wada-san.
So it looks like the menu is based on the seasons.
Yes, if we see, oh, this is a beautiful season with Japan,
it's easy, but that's pretty much anyone does.
So why don't we go further,
which is sweet Wind travels around the season of Japan.
Okay, so what do you recommend for us today?
Why don't we introduce our spring cocktail,
which is Usui, Sakura Zen Sen.
Oh, this is based on American rye whiskey,
and honey comes from Kurume City
and lemon comes from Hiroshima
and Aromatized with a little bit of matcha.
Matcha comes from Kyoto Uji.
[Melinda] You said that this has a story?
What you see leaking is Tears of Geisha.
Oh. Isn't that so cool?
That's so cool. Drink.
Comes in waves. Right? Yeah.
[upbeat music]
If you're coming to Tokyo for the first time,
of course you wanna have ramen.
I was the same way when I first came to Tokyo
oh so many years ago, I had ramen all the time.
It was such an easy way to go get something
that was delicious and filling
and great for just one person.
There are so many great places to choose from.
Let's see what the internet says.
We have ramen Ichiran, the Shinyokohama Ramen Museum,
also Ramen Street in Tokyo Station.
Actually, these are all great choices.
Shinyokohama Ramen Museum is so much fun, actually,
it's like going to the Disneyland of Ramen.
The Ramen Street in Tokyo Station is also a really good way
to see what's going on in the ramen scene today,
all in one place.
What I really recommend is an experience
that you can have only in Tokyo,
and that's why I wanna take you to Ginza Hachigou.

The balance is really important,
and that's what I'm finding in this bowl of ramen.
You have the texture of the noodles,
which is both delicate and pliant
and with enough chew
to make you feel like you're really eating noodles,
but you see that they are thin so
that they don't feel too overpowering.
There's not a trace of heaviness in this for me at all.
It's really the natural flavor
of the ingredients coming through.
[upbeat music]
Well, of course, Kyoto is the capital of temples in Japan,
but in Tokyo we also have a lot of cool temples to visit.
So let's take a look at what the recommended ones are.
The very first one that comes up is of course,
Senso-ji in Asakusa
and it is a beautiful temple.
It is iconic, it is huge.
And if you need to get your Instagram moment,
then of course I think you should go there.
But I recommend
for a really unique experience
right here in the middle of Tokyo, Fukagawa Fudo-do.
[peaceful music] [water splashing]
One of the things that makes the temple so unique is
that every day, five times a day,
they perform a Goma ritual, which is a fire ritual.
That is a time that people can pray
for different wishes and come for spiritual purification.
It doesn't matter if you are yourself religious,
it's just more you get a sense of
how these institutions are still very much
a part of people's lives here.

When people come to Tokyo,
they always ask me about Kobe beef,
but I think there's a little misunderstanding
about what exactly Kobe beef is.
Kobe beef refers specifically to a brand of beef
made from cattle grown in a certain prefecture in Japan,
Hyōgo prefecture.
It is one kind of beef in the category of Wagyu.
Kobe beef is of course delicious.
It's strictly regulated,
but there are many other brands of Japanese beef
or Wagyu that are also wonderful.
So where can you taste this succulent beef?
Let's see what the internet says.
Okay, so it's so popular that tons of things come up,
and I'm sure that a lot of them are great.
But I would like to take you to
what I think is maybe the best Wagyu experience.
Wagyumafia. [crowd cheering]
There's no way to put into words the intensity of the energy
and the pure flavor that they deliver here at Wagyu Mafia.
[both speaking in Japanese]
[Melinda] I mean, really spectacular.
It's not like at a restaurant at all,
and it's not like at a house.
It really feels like a performance.
[both speaking in Japanese]
You are such a big personality.
When people think about Wagyumafia,
they think about the performance
and they think about indulgence.
Food has to be fun, food has to be enjoyable.
Before Wagyumafia, you sit down quiet for two hours,
very end of the meal,
you get a tiny bit of Kobe beef,
but you're not allowed to talk big, you know?
With Wagyumafia, I wanted to create excitement
'cause I think the happiness is new part of our money.
People shout and I have a 93-year-old lady
as a one of my regular customers.
She can understand that. She said, oh, I feel young now.
This is a food I wanna serve to my family.
Right, right. And my friends.
And I want to eat. Yes.
Yeah, day off, no, I come back to Wagyumafia to eat it.

Tokyo's drinking culture
and its bar scene is legendary, not only for the precision
and craft of bartenders at high-end cocktail bars,
but also for the sheer breadth
and variety of the drinking establishments
that we have here.
We have lively Izaki
where you can get a cheap and easy drink.
We have bars that are standing room only
where you can drop in to say hi and have a beer.
And then we have experiences
that you can only find here in Tokyo.
I'm gonna take you to a one of a kind place called Twillo.
The best way to describe it is that
it's a kind of food truck meets high-end cocktail bar
that moves around the city in a different place every night.

One of the things that makes the city
so dynamic is the way that you have old
and new right next to each other.
You might have a restaurant that is a hundred years old
next to a really tiny contemporary restaurant
with only eight seats.
Or you might find the most unusual shop stuck
in a high rise building with no real sign.
When you walk around Tokyo,
you will always find something new.
There's so much to see in this city.
You have to just be open with all of your senses
and start taking a look.

India International Visitor Spending Hits Record High
STR reported China hotel data for the week ended May 31st. China hotel RevPAR fell 13% year-over-year, up against a tough comp of a 2% increase in the year-ago week. The decline was split somewhat evenly, with occupancy down 6.4% and ADR down 7%. The World Travel & Tourism Council said international visitor spending in India jumped to an all-time high of US$36.8 billion in 2024, up 9% over the pre-pandemic levels in 2019. India welcomes 20 million foreign tourists in 2024, surpassing 2019 figures by 2.3 million. They are projecting increases in 2025 off the record performance bolstered by increasing air connectivity, digital visa systems, and rising global interest in India's heritage and natural assets. Domestic tourism generated US$185.6 billion in 2024, up 22% from 2019 levels. The WTTC also expects that to rise in 2025, driven by younger demographics, increased disposable incomes, and a stronger post-pandemic preference for local exploration. The report indicated domestic tourists contributed nearly 84% of the total visitor spending in 2024. India's total travel and tourism GDP contribution in 2024 stood at US$249.3 billion, up 20% over 2019, about 6.6% of the national economy. Japan welcomed more than 3.9 million foreign visitors in April 2025, driven by U.S. demand and major cultural events. That is a new record, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization, and up 28.5% from April 2024. Arrivals from the United States were up 43% year-over-year, with visitors from the U.S. already topping one million in the first four months of the year. Thailand's government is on a full-court press to try to offset the negative perception and reception to their casino entertainment complexes plan. The expectation had been a quick passage so they could get them open before MGM opens their massive IR in Osaka, Japan. That has all changed. The government's press conference on the matter laid out plans for passage of the bill in 2026 (originally expected very early 2025), looking like fewer properties than before with higher budgets, opening in 2030-2031, right around the time MGM is expected to open in Japan. It also seems like they are changing their tune on the locals being allowed to gamble as the previous, very unpopular by the industry, plan to only have those with a lot of money in the bank to be allowed to gamble changed to only those on a negative list, such as self-exclusion or family exclusion being unable to enter the casino. Those areas without casinos will be viewed as potential for entertainment facilities like stadiums and cruise/yacht terminals. Next month is when lawmakers will start debating the bill, and there is still the Senate study, which is looking like it will have a negative bias, so this is definitely still not a sure thing. Hilton Tokyo announced it will redo its ballroom as part of a multi-million dollar phased renovation of event spaces to meet the growing demand from international and domestic markets. The remodel will transform the Shinjuku property's entire fourth floor, comprising a total floor space of 1,422 square meters, to create modern, tech-ready areas for flexible event experiences. This follows the completion of renovations on the third floor last year, which added 200 square meters of meeting space to the existing 1,000 square meters. This latest phase is due to be completed in October. The Kiku Ballroom will be remodeled to allow for partitioning into four sections. The hotel has 830 guest rooms and is known as a premier destination for events. IHG Hotels & Resorts has expanded its hotel management portfolio in Vietnam by signing an agreement with Nha Trang Bay JSC, a member of the GreenSpark Group. IHG will manage the voco Scenia Bay Nha Trang – By IHG, opening around the end of this year. The 250-unit property will have 28 floors, located less than an hour's drive from Cam Ranh International Airport. Amenities will include a swimming pool, restaurant, bars, and meeting facilities, and will be IHG's fourth hotel in the region. They have 20 hotels across eight brands scattered across the country. Dusit Princess Melaka, Dusit International's debut property in Malaysia, held its grand opening on May 29th. The hotel unveiled one of the largest meeting and event spaces in Melaka, further enhancing the city's appeal as a regional MICE destination. The 296-room hotel is located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage City. Pontiac Land Group, developer and owner of Capella Sydney, is looking for more mixed-use projects in Australia. Pontiac said they were attracted to the NSW capital due to high government spending on infrastructure, such as the metro, Australia's biggest public transport project. The 192-room Capella Sydney was opened two years ago. City Developments Ltd. agreed to sell its 50.1% stake in the South Beach mixed project in Singapore to its Malaysian partner, IOI Properties Group, for about S$834.2 million. The deal values the complex at S$2.75 billion, including the S$1.16 billion in liabilities. The project in Singapore's CBD includes retail space, a 34-story office tower, and a 45-story building housing JW Marriott Hotel Singapore. Far East Orchard Ltd. announced the termination of its joint venture agreement with Real Hospitality Group Asia Co. Ltd. The JV had been formed to establish a hospitality management business in China, but Far East said the JV had been unable to find suitable opportunities, so it was terminated. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts has expanded its presence in Eastern India with the opening of Ramada by Wyndham Ranchi Bariatu Road, marking the brand's debut in the capital of Jharkhand. The hotel is located in the premium Rameshwaram Colony on Bariatu Road and was developed by Shakambari Builders Private Limited. The 2025 China Dragon Boat Tournament (Sichuan · Bazhong Enyang Stage) Concludes Successfully
Sichuan, China, June 5, 2025 -- On May 31, the first day of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, the finals of the 2025 China Dragon Boat Tournament – Sichuan Bazhong Enyang Stage – officially kicked off with intense competition at the Enyang Dragon Boat Park. Organized by the Social Sports Guidance Center of the General Administration of Sport of China, the Sports and Youth Program Center of China Media Group, and the China Dragon Boat Association, this event marks the opening leg of this year's national tournament. The competition featured seven categories: Professional Men's, Professional Women's, Elite Open, Youth Men's, Youth Women's, Local Men's, and a special U16 'Children's Day' division. Athletes competed in four race formats: 100m, 200m, and 500m straight courses, as well as a 1,000m round-trip race. A total of 48 teams from 28 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities across the country—comprising approximately 1,100 athletes—participated in the tournament. The opening ceremony began at 9:30 a.m. and showcased a vibrant cultural program, including the traditional dance performance Song Dynasty Style, recitations from Dream of Splendor and Li Sao, the children's folk song Zhang the Blacksmith and Li the Blacksmith, and the musical performance Rise of the Chinese Dragon. Stirring choral renditions of A Folk Song for the Party and My Motherland and I further energized the crowd, adding to the festive atmosphere. On the Enyang River, dragon boats raced fiercely, their paddles slicing through the water with rhythmic precision. On the banks, Enyang Dragon Boat Park was filled with cheering spectators, their chants and applause creating a spirited and electric ambiance. The event captured the essence and thrill of dragon boat racing, leaving both participants and audiences exhilarated. After a day of intense and closely contested races, eight teams claimed victories across 22 race categories. Among the top performers, teams such as Shunde Lecong Louvre, Sichuan Jiangkouchun, and Northeast Electric Power University secured first place in overall team scores across seven divisions. 'I just happened to be traveling in Sichuan by car and stumbled upon the dragon boat race,' said Geng Yuegao, a dragon boat enthusiast from Yancheng, Jiangsu. 'The atmosphere is incredible—we all want to get in the water and paddle!' During the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, Bazhong is also hosting a series of themed cultural events. Highlights include the opening of the Song-style urban street zone 'Dream of Splendor' in Enyang and the 'Enyang Night' intangible cultural heritage fireworks show, offering plenty to look forward to. Geng added that he plans to explore Bazhong while following the tournament. The China Dragon Boat Tournament is currently the nation's premier dragon boat competition, known for the highest level of athletic performance, the largest prize pool, and the strongest reputation and influence across the sport. This marks the third consecutive year that this national-level event has been hosted in Bazhong. According to a representative from the China Dragon Boat Association, Bazhong offers an exceptional natural environment for hosting water sports. The Enyang River, the venue for the tournament, features a wide and straight river course with ideal depth, crystal-clear water, and calm flow. Its picturesque surroundings and excellent viewing angles from both banks make it an outstanding setting for competitive water events. In addition to its natural advantages, Bazhong brings strong capabilities in event organization, competition management, hospitality, and volunteer services. Through what has come to be known as the 'Bazhong warmth,' the city provides a welcoming, seamless, and heartwarming experience for athletes and visitors alike. In recent years, Bazhong has seen a remarkable rise in public fitness initiatives. By the end of last year, the city had built 10 sports parks, 6 public sports venues, and 342 tennis and badminton courts, making physical activity increasingly accessible to residents. Since the beginning of this year, Bazhong has set a clear goal: to host distinctive sports and cultural events every month. Under the guiding framework of '23 flagship events + 63 supporting activities,' the city has already successfully launched several high-profile national and provincial events. These include the National Youth Science and Audiovisual Conference, the China BMX Freestyle League, and the first leg of the 2025 China Canoe Marathon Open (Sichuan · Bazhou Stage). 'By hosting festivals and major sporting events, we aim to attract more people to discover Bazhong, fall in love with it, and remember it,' said a representative from the Bazhong Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Sports and Tourism. The city is committed to amplifying the synergy between events and urban development, striving to convert event-driven traffic into long-term consumption and economic vitality. Sport as a Gateway to Scenic EncountersBazhong has firmly established a strategic vision of 'cultivating people through sports and energizing the city through events.' The goal is to build the 'Active Bazhong' brand and position the city as an international destination for mountain-based outdoor recreation and leisure. Beyond the economic benefits, major events have become a platform for cultural and creative expression. Accompanying activities such as drone light shows and displays of intangible cultural heritage blend Bazhong's rich millennia-old cultural legacy with contemporary sports, breathing new life into the revolutionary old base area. This dual impact of 'sports events' and 'urban revitalization' reflects the city's dynamic approach to development and cultural preservation.
