On the Hunt for Spies, Iran Executes a Nuclear Scientist
The judiciary said the scientist, Roozbeh Vadi, had worked at one of the country's most sensitive and important nuclear sites and had access to the type of classified information sought by Iran's enemies. Mr. Vadi was executed by hanging after he was found guilty of espionage and providing information to Israel, the judiciary said.
The execution follows a 12-day war with Israel and the United States in June, when Israel assassinated at least 30 Iranian senior military commanders and 11 nuclear scientists.
Iranian officials have acknowledged publicly that Israel's widespread infiltration of its security and intelligence apparatuses enabled Israel to eliminate key parts of Iran's military chain of command in the war's first night and helped it launch drone attacks from inside Iran. Following the war, officials have blamed Israel for a series of explosions and fires around the country.
While the two countries have been locked in a long-running shadow war, the apparent accuracy of Israel's information and its launching attacks inside the country has rattled Iranian officials.
Since the war ended, authorities have swept up hundreds of people, including activists and dissidents, on suspicions of spying and threatening national security, Iranian media reports and rights groups say.

BEIRUT (AP) — A U.S. congress member said Thursday that Washington will push Israel to withdraw from all of southern Lebanon if the Lebanese army asserts full control over the country. After Tuesday's cabinet meeting, Hezbollah accused the government of caving to U.S. and Israeli pressure and said it would 'treat this decision as if it does not exist.' Hezbollah officials have said the group will not discuss giving up its remaining arsenal until Israel withdraws from five hills it is occupying inside Lebanon and stops almost daily airstrikes that have killed or wounded hundreds of people, most of them Hezbollah members, since the latest Israel-Hezbollah war ended in November with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire. Israel has accused Hezbollah of trying to rebuild its military capabilities and said it is protecting its border. Since the ceasefire, Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for one attack fired across the border. Issa, who is of Lebanese origin, said that the U.S. must 'help all the neighbors around understand that it is the exclusive right of the Lebanese Armed Forces to make decisions.' Lebanese Army to Prepare Plan to Disarm Hezbollah
The Lebanese government on Aug. 5 authorized its army to draw up a plan to restrict weapons across the country to six official security agencies by year's end, a move that would effectively dismantle Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Shiite Muslim terrorist group that operates independently of the state.
