Parts of Limpopo to be affected by a 11-hour power outage

Eskom has confirmed that areas supplied by the Vaalwater and Dorset substations in Limpopo will experience an 11-hour power outage on Wednesday, 1 May, due to emergency maintenance on the Nylstroom-Vaalwater 66kv line. The outage is scheduled from 9:00 to 20:00 and will affect Vaalwater Town, Vaalwater Township, and neighbouring farms.
The power utility said this action is necessary to ensure the reliability of supply and to prevent potential long-term disruptions.
'The safety and well-being of our community and customers are paramount, and we urge all customers to treat all electrical connections as live during this period,' Eskom said in a statement.
It also asked customers not to log faults during the power outage. Eskom maintenance amid system improvements
The emergency work comes as Eskom continues with its broader maintenance programme ahead of the winter season.
'Planned maintenance continues to ensure system readiness for increased winter demand, to meet regulatory requirements and to ensure environmental compliance,' the utility said.
Over the first 24 days of April 2025, Eskom placed 7 164MW under planned maintenance, amounting to 15.32% of total generation capacity—an increase from last year's 11.52%. At the same time, the Unplanned Capacity Loss Factor (UCLF) has improved to 27.82%, a drop of about 2.1% from the same period in 2024.
Eskom noted that between 18 and 24 April, average unplanned power outages dropped to 13 430MW, 472MW less than last year.
Eskom also revealed that it had spent about R2.19 billion year-to-date on fuel for Open-Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGTS), generating 372.05 GWh—more than double the output in 2024. The utility expects this fuel usage to decrease as maintenance slows down over winter.

Orlando Pirates set sights on Atlantis-born talent

Orlando Pirates may reignite their pursuit of long-time target Jaedin Rhodes, as preparations for the upcoming season intensify. The Soweto giants, reflecting on a campaign that delivered both triumph and heartbreak, are already making moves in the transfer market. Last season brought the MTN8 Cup back to the Bucs' cabinet, but they fell just short of glory in both the CAF Champions League semifinals and the Nedbank Cup. Despite parting ways with head coach Jose Riveiro, the club remains focused on rebuilding a title-challenging squad. One name firmly back in the mix is 22-year-old Jaedin Rhodes. The Cape Town City midfielder, born in Atlantis, remains a top priority despite an underwhelming season on paper. Rhodes featured in 28 matches across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing a single assist. Still, Pirates remain undeterred. According to a source, they plan to renew efforts to bring Rhodes to Johannesburg during the upcoming transfer window, despite City's past resistance. 'Pirates have always shown an interest in Rhodes, and he fits the physical and technical profile in terms of age as well,' a source told The South African . Cape Town City's current predicament may tip the scales. The Citizens are staring down the barrel of a Promotion/Relegation Play-Off clash, currently set to involve Casric Stars and Orbit College. This uncertainty could make it increasingly difficult for the club to hold onto key players like Rhodes. Making things trickier for the Pirates, however, is Rhodes' contract situation. Just last year, he extended his stay with City by signing a five-year deal, making a potential move more complex and possibly more expensive. 'His numbers are not great but they believe he could do well at Orlando Stadium. The new coach that comes in will also play a role in how he progresses, should he come,' the source added. Despite modest statistics, Pirates see long-term potential in Rhodes. His age, athleticism, and technical style align with the club's long-term strategic goals. JUST IN: EFF loses court bid to interdict fuel levy increase

The Western Cape High Court has dismissed the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) application to interdict the 4% fuel levy increase. The 4% hike was announced by the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, when he tabled the revised 2025 Budget Speech for the third time in May and will be effective from Wednesday, 4 June. In challenging the proposed hike, the EFF argued that the fuel levy increase places an unjust burden on the working class and the poor, who are already reeling from rising costs of living, stagnant wages, and ongoing economic hardship. The party maintained that the levy is both economically unjust and unconstitutional, as it deepens inequality and undermines access to essential goods and services. Moreover, the EFF had argued that the standing committee on finance sits on Wednesday 4 June and it is only then that such an increase can be approved. Not before, as the 2025 fuel levy increases have been slated to go into effect the same day. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Here is the official petrol price for June 2025

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has confirmed the official fuel price adjustments for this month which will take effect from midnight on Tuesday, 3 June. May saw volatility in the oil price and the strengthening of the rand against the dollar relative to April. This resulted in a consistent over-recovery in fuel prices. However, a hike in the general fuel levy from the latest budget undercut this by around 15 cents per litre. This has translated to a small reduction in petrol prices in June. Petrol will be cut by 5 cents per litre for 93 and 95, and there will be a decrease of 37 cents per litre for diesel.
