Dabang Delhi beat Jaipur Patriots in UTT opener

Ahmedabad, May 31 (PTI) Former champions Dabang Delhi TTC started their campaign on a positive note by outplaying Jaipur Patriots 11-4 in the opening match of Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) here Saturday.
Quek Izaac of Singapore came from a game down to beat American Kanak Jha 2-1 (5-11 11-5 11-9) in the first men's singles match to hand 2018 champions Dabang Delhi the lead.
India international Sreeja Akula brought Jaipur Patriots back with a 2-1 (4-11 11-9 11-10) win over Maria Xiao of Spain in women's singles.
Olympian Sathiyan Gnanasekaran then joined forces with Xiao for Dabang Delhi and defeated the pair of Jha and Akula 3-0 (11-6 11-10 11-6) in the mixed doubles match.
Gnanasekaran was on fire then, scoring an easy 3-0 (11-6 11-7 11-6) win over Jeet Chandra in the reverse men's singles.
Diya Chitale took looked in good touch and was quick with both her forehand and backhand shots. She used top spin serves and powerful forehand smashed to prevail over Netherland's Britt Eerland to hand Dabang Delhi an easy win and confident start.
In the league stage of UTT league, a game is won when a player scores first 11 points, with a golden point used deciding games that are tied at 10-10.

Shubman Gill won't find Test captaincy easy, needs to work on batting: Ricky Ponting
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes Shubman Gill's promotion to India's Test captaincy comes with more challenges and feels the young batter would be better off moving down to No. 4 in the batting order during the demanding five-Test series in England, starting June 20."His white-ball form has been incredibly good. He's got a little bit of work to do on his Test match batting. And that's never easy when you're a new captain, to have to worry about your batting to the degree that he's going to have to, it won't be easy for him," Ponting told PTI during the IPL, where he coached Punjab Kings to the who began his Test career as an opener, has in recent months batted at No. 3. With the additional burden of captaincy, Ponting feels it is prudent to shield him slightly in the batting order. "India have made the right investment in Gill the captain," he said. "I actually named him as captain for the Sydney Test match last summer when Rohit didn't play that game and there was a bit of an injury cloud over Bumrah, or as that game went on, Bumrah actually broke down in that game."And look, I don't know Shubman that well. I've spoken to him six, eight, 10 times, maybe the last couple of years around different things and around batting and around leadership. He's done a great job with GT (Gujarat Titans), no doubt about that," he he just seemed the sort of guy that the extra responsibility wouldn't faze too much. It seems like he's got a really level head on his shoulders. He's someone that's going to be around in Indian cricket for another 10 years."In his 32-Test career, Gill has shown flair but also a tendency to play with hard hands-a habit that has often led to his downfall in challenging conditions. His defensive game, in particular, has come under believes the issue is more mental than technical. "(But) I think sometimes you might just get a little bit either ahead of himself or a little bit lazy in the middle of a Test match innings. You can't afford to do that. You've got to be 100 per cent committed to every ball that you face through six or seven hours of every think that's the challenge for Shubman..." Despite comparing India's new Test captain Shubman Gill, to the legendary Virender Sehwag, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting outlined that a similar approach is likely to meet a fresh challenge in the upcoming tour of England, and hence has work to do on his Test match batting. The Aussie great also called for a change in his batting position, considering the added responsibility of captaincy. Speaking to PTI, Ponting addressed Gill's much-criticised defensive technique, which has cost the youngster multiple times in his short career thus far. And although he sees no technical flaw in his approach, he reckoned Gill has to work on the mental side of Test match batting. "It's a bit both. Legendary cricketer Kapil Dev expressed concern over the stampede that killed 11 and injured 47 in Bengaluru during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2025 victory celebrations on Tuesday evening. According to officials, the immediate cause of the tragedy was the collapse of a temporary slab placed over a drain near the stadium, which gave way under the weight of the crowd, triggering panic and incident has sparked criticism of RCB's handling of the event, with sources confirming that the team went ahead with the announcement of a bus parade despite without nod from the police. The RCB management reportedly sought permission from the Bengaluru City Police on June 3 but proceeded to tweet details of the parade route and timing without formal clearance. The tweet, which went viral, included a link for 'free passes (limited entry)', resulting in an overwhelming sources claim they had advised RCB to delay the event to Sunday, to allow for security arrangements and avoid weekday traffic congestion. However, the victory parade went ahead on June 4, a day after the final, with minimal coordination with civic and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) have since issued statements mourning the loss of lives and expressing solidarity with the families of the victims. RCB announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of 11 dead in the incident has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for accountability and an official inquiry into how such a large-scale event was allowed to proceed without adequate planning or security.
