EXCLUSIVE Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman surprises young girls at a local football club as she gears up to lead England Women to victory

Daily Mail03-07-2025
Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman surprised a young group of women at football training as she gears up to lead the England team to victory.
Arriving at Wembley Park, she turned up to teach the group about healthy eating as part of England's brand deal with Marks & Spencer.
Sarina, 55, surprised 25 girls aged between nine and 11 from Ark Academy, a local school.
Asked by the girls what it's like to train the Lionesses, she said: 'I love it and I am the lucky one to train with the best players in the country. They're so ambitious and so talented. And I hope I will continue that for a while.'
Asked about any advice for young women wanting to become a footballer, she said: 'Make mistakes because you learn from them.
'Work really hard and be a good person.'
Arriving at Wembley Park, she turned up to teach the group about healthy eating as part of England's brand deal with Marks & Spencer.
She continued: 'Winning with the Netherlands was one of my favourite moments in my career and winning in 2022 here in Wembley.
'I used to be a PE teacher and I think it's one of the coolest jobs you can have.
'I just loved it.'
It comes as the Lionesses are gearing up for their group stage matches, playing on Saturday against France.
Just yesterday it was announced Alessia Russo, Hannah Hampton, and Lucy Parker signed a huge new brand deal with Extra, the chewing gum brand.
Earlier this week it was revealed Wiegman's position as England head coach is not under threat, even if the Lionesses fail to progress beyond the group stage at this summer's European Championships.
England have been drawn in a 'group of death' alongside 2017 Euros champions the Netherlands and heavyweights France, as well as major tournament debutants Wales, and are coming into their title defence on an inconsistent run of form.
The year started with an impressive win against world champions Spain, as well as a 5-0 drubbing of Belgium in the Nations League, but both reverse fixtures away from home ended in disappointing defeats.
To add to this, the withdrawal of key leaders Mary Earps, Fran Kirby and Millie Bright in the lead-up to the squad announcement has added an air of uncertainty ahead of England's Euros campaign, which kicks off next Saturday against France.
She continued: 'Winning with the Netherlands was one of my favourite moments in my career and winning in 2022 here in Wembley. 'I used to be a PE teacher and I think it's one of the coolest jobs you can have. I just loved it.'

And FA CEO Mark Bullingham has thrown his weight behind Wiegman ahead of the curtain-raiser. When asked whether an early England exit would affect Wiegman's position, he replied: 'I think we're delighted that Sarina's in place for 2027 and I don't see any scenario changing that.'
He added: 'We know we're one of a number of teams who can win it (the Euros), and there are actually three of those in our group. We've prepared well and we believe the Nations League provided us with some really testing fixtures for us to improve.
Wiegman is contracted to remain in post until 2027. When she took over in 2021, England were eighth in the world and have not left the top five since winning the Euros on home soil in 2022 and leading them to the World Cup final in 2023.
She remains the only coach – men's or women's – to win two major tournaments with two different countries, having led the Netherlands to Euros glory in 2017.
As for extending her contract beyond 2027, those talks are yet to occur.
'We think she (Wiegman) is a fantastic coach and she's done a brilliant job for us,' Bullingham said. 'We're delighted that she's with us until at least 2027; we haven't started to look beyond that timescale yet or engaged in those conversations. We're locked in for this tournament and the next one (Brazil World Cup 2027) and that feels very good for now. But that's not to say we wouldn't have a conversation at some point in the future.'

Rangers boss Martin dismisses reports star asset Raskin has handed in a transfer request

RANGERS boss Russell Martin has dismissed any suggestion that star midfielder Nico Raskin has asked to leave the club. Reports emerged online over the weekend claiming that the Belgian international had formally handed in a transfer request amid ongoing interest from abroad. Martin spoke last week about how Raskin's head may have been turned earlier in the summer, whilst also praising his attitude and the way he has since knuckled down. But the Ibrox boss was emphatic in shooting down reports that Raskin had apparently informed the club of his intention to leave. Speaking ahead of Tuesday's Champions League play-off showdown with Club Brugge in Glasgow, Martin said: 'I've loved working with Nico, I think he'll get better and better. 'The only reason he wasn't in the squad on Saturday (against Alloa) was for a rest. But he's trained really well. I think he's going to be a big player for us. 'I said that from the beginning. I've also said it's been a difficult summer for him and all that, but really, the last few weeks, I've loved the energy that Nico's brought. 'He's been really good. We analysed his clips, me and him together, from the game against Plzen last Tuesday. 'He is going to be really important for us. He will play tomorrow night and he'll be a good player for us. 'So, no, I've not heard anything (about him asking to leave). Not at all. He's been brilliant. I'm pretty sure Kevin (Thelwell, sporting director) and Patrick (Stewart, chief executive) would have told me if we'd heard that sooner.' Knowing that a £40million windfall is at stake if Rangers can secure Champions League football, Martin and his players will go up against a Brugge side who reached the last 16 in last season's competition. Whilst Rangers will be rated as underdogs by most observers, Martin doesn't want his team to approach the match with that sort of mentality. He also believes qualifying for the Champions League would be transformational for the club, both in terms of finances and also accelerating the development of his new-look team. Urging his players to seize the opportunity, he continued: 'I don't think we'd ever go into any game considering ourselves underdogs, for sure. 'If we can qualify, I think the belief it would give the players would be massive. I think what it would do for the football club financially would be huge. 'So I think if we were able to do it, which I really believe we can, if we can do it and qualify for it, I think it would be brilliant. 'Someone asked me if we've got the squad depth and all that to sustain it, if we need to worry about it, I think let's try and get in there first and qualify. 'Then we're building a squad that has to compete in Europe, whether it's Europa League or the Champions League. So I think it would be incredibly exciting. It would help us a lot as a football club moving forward. 'Not just financially, but what it would do for the players and their belief. And to then pit yourself against some of the best teams in the world would be a brilliant opportunity for us. 'So we're here to try and attack it as much as we can. I want the players to really seize the opportunity. 'Rather than feeling the weight of it (pressure and expectation), look at the other side. Look at how brilliant it would be if we can achieve this together.' The main issues in terms of team selection will come up front and at left-back. Cyriel Dessers is rated as touch and go as he recovers from a knee injury, meaning that Danilo will probably get the nod. Rangers are hopeful of pushing through the paperwork in order for new signing Jayden Meghoma to start at left-back, with Max Aarons also an option. 'We think he (Meghoma) is going to be registered in time for tomorrow's match,' added Martin. 'We hope so anyway, so we'll have to wait and see. But yeah, that's the hope, that he can be in the squad. We will see, today and yesterday he trained, so we'll see if he's ready to go. 'Big Cyriel is probably the only concern. He'll be touch and go. He's responded really well to treatment. It was nowhere near as bad as we first feared. So if it's not tomorrow, we expect him to be back for the weekend and next week.'

Jamie Vardy lined up for major shock transfer to Champions League team - in what could be a dream move for wife Rebekah

Jamie Vardy has emerged as a surprise target for Napoli. The free agent former England international has been taking his time considering offers with a number of top clubs showing interest. Italian champions Napoli have now added the 38-year old to their list of options after Romelu Lukaku was ruled out for three months with injury. Chelsea 's Nicolas Jackson is another target but could prove too expensive. Vardy left Leicester City at the end of the season after a glittering spell that saw him score 200 goals in 500 appearances and win the Premier League and FA Cup. His fitness, professionalism and mentality mean he is still an attractive proposition to top tier sides despite his advancing years. Celtic, Rangers and Everton are among the other sides to have shown levels of interest in recent weeks. Napoli have previously asked about Manchester United's Rasmus Hojlund and Liverpool's Darwin Nunez and that was prior to Lukaku's injury. The 32-year old Belgium international may need surgery after tearing a thigh muscle in his left leg against Olympiacos during a friendly last week.

Crystal Palace line up Marc Guehi contingency plan amid Liverpool interest

Crystal Palace are considering Rennes talent Jeremy Jacquet should Marc Guehi join Liverpool, although that move remains very much in the balance. The Selhurst Park club have been open to selling Guehi this summer given his contract expires next year, but there has recently been a £10m difference in valuation between themselves and Liverpool. While the Anfield hierarchy are not budging from £35m, Palace are insistent on £45m. The figure is all the more important since Rennes would want £35m for Jacquet. The 20-year-old is just the latest French talent to have come out of the Bondy area in Paris, which has also produced Kylian Mbappe and scores of other pros. Jacquet was part of the team of the tournament for the under-19 European Championship last summer, where France reached the final, and made a significant impact on loan at Clermont last season. Guehi and Eberechi Eze, who is the subject of interest from Tottenham, both started Crystal Palace's Premier League draw at Chelsea on Sunday, with manager Oliver Glasner insisting that they remain fully committed to the club. 'Ebs and Marc, there has been a lot of noise about these two players in the last week,' Glasner said to Match of the Day. 'Everyone could see the performances against Liverpool and today, they were 100 per cent aligned with this team and Crystal Palace,' 'As long as they are 100 per cent committed, they will play as they are so good. I watched them all week in training, I spoke to them almost daily, maybe more than my kids and wife, but it's been worth it to talk to them. They didn't just show they are great footballers, but they are great people and that's what I expected.'
