Tourist ‘Is in Trouble' After Stones Taken from Pompeii, Police Say
The tourist was accused of stealing five stones and a fragment of brick from the world-renowned archaeological site on Wednesday. In a statement on Thursday, the police did not name the 51-year-old man but said he 'is in trouble' and under investigation for aggravated theft. Charges have not yet been filed.
Investigators described the case as a 'perfect example of synergy' between a tour guide at Pompeii, site employees and a Carabinieri police unit stationed there.
While escorting a group of visitors through the site, a tour guide saw a man pick up 'pieces of pavement from one of the streets of the ancient city' and put them in his backpack, according to the police statement.
It said the guide informed site employees and park security, giving a detailed description of the accused perpetrator. They, in turn, informed the Carabinieri police, who tracked down the tourist at a train station outside the site. The stones and brick fragment were found in the man's backpack, the statement said.
The tourist initially said 'that his son had taken them because he collects rocks and he didn't know it was illegal to pick up stones in Pompeii,' a spokesman for the Carabinieri in Naples, asked not to be identified as is customary in Italy, said by phone.

Man posing as hospital worker swipes skin grafts, valuable medical equipment, officials say
A Riverside County man was arrested for allegedly posing as a hospital worker and stealing more than $100,000 worth of medical equipment, according to authorities. Around 3:30 p.m. on July 9, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff's Office responded to a hospital in the 35000 block of Bob Hope Drive to a report of medical equipment theft, according to a news release. Authorities say the suspect allegedly dressed as a hospital employee — wearing blue scrubs and surgical mask — and stole more than $100,000 worth of surgical equipment and skin grafts during three separate incidents in June and July, according to the news release. On Aug. 6, 47-year-old San Jacinto resident Jason Brauner was stopped by deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff's Office in Del Mar, according to the release. When deputies searched his vehicle, they allegedly found stolen medical equipment and hospital apparel. Authorities also served a search warrant at Brauner's residence on Potomac Circle in San Jacinto and allegedly recovered additional stolen medical supplies worth between $10,000 and $25,000. Brauner was booked into the John Benoit Detention Center on suspicion of grand theft, commercial burglary and possession of stolen property, according to the release. Deputies also discovered that hospitals in Newport Beach and Loma Linda were targeted in similar thefts. Brauner has been identified as a suspect in those incidents. Authorities plan to file additional charges against Brauner in relation to those incidents and are investigating whether other hospitals may have been targeted as well, according to the release. Labor union accuses 3 companies contracted by Hennepin, Ramsey counties of stealing $700K in wages
A union representing thousands of workers is accusing three Twin Cities businesses contracted by Hennepin and Ramsey counties of stealing wages. The stolen funds could surpass $700,000, according to SEIU Local 26. More than 70 workers for these contractors have been underpaid between five to twelve dollars an hour, the union said. SEIU Local 26 is pointing the finger at cleaning companies PK Services and Squeaky Services, and security guard service Black Knight Protection Agency. "These workers deserve every cent that they have earned, they've worked so hard for. They need to be made whole," said Jen Guertin, an officer at the St. Paul Regional Labor Federation. The union said they have reviewed pay stubs and spoken with workers, like Jhonnier Gazo. Gazo said he makes $18 per hour working for PK Services. He said he found he should be making what's called a prevailing wage, a required pay of $27.80 per hour in Ramsey County, accounting for pay and benefits. "Although I'm afraid of losing my job, I am not afraid to raise my voice," said Gazo through an interpreter. Paul Beckfeld, the founder of PK Services, said the wage theft allegations are not true. A department of labor audit from a few years ago did find pay errors, but they've since been corrected, he said. Gregory Murphy said he works for Black Knight Security and found he was underpaid by nearly $6 an hour. "I demand that Black Knight pays us what they owe us. This is not fair and we will not stay silent," said Murphy. Neither Black Knight Security nor Squeaky Services would comment on the allegations. The union said there are active investigations, by both the Hennepin and Ramsey County attorneys offices, but neither would comment on if there's an investigation. "We would call on the counties to terminate the contracts with these contractors, as the counties are legally entitled to do," said Greg Nammacher, president of SEIU Local 26.

Cops bust theft ring that targeted major supermarkets
Nineteen people have been arrested for shoplifting more than $10 million worth of goods, after police busted one of the largest theft syndicates seen in Australia. Victoria Police allege the syndicate targeted major supermarkets, taking items like baby formula, medicines, vitamins, skincare products, electric toothbrushes and toiletries. "Those arrested are predominantly Indian nationals on temporary, student, or bridging visas," the force said in a statement on Friday. "They are alleged to be working in a coordinated network to supply stolen goods to 'receivers', who then on-sell the products to end users for profit." The operation to smash the syndicate was led by the Box Hill divisional response unit, which worked with retailers and the Australian Border Force. "This has been one of the most significant operations we've undertaken in recent times to target organised retail theft," Detective Acting Inspector Rachele Ciavarella said. Investigations remain ongoing, with further arrests anticipated. Retail theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in Victoria, with 41,270 offences recorded in the past year, a 38 per cent increase statewide.
