30 years ago today: Rockets complete historic journey to second NBA championship

30 years ago today: Rockets complete historic journey to second NBA championship It was June 14, 1995, when Hakeem Olajuwon's Rockets completed perhaps the most iconic run to a championship in NBA history. Now 30 years later, we're taking a look back. On this day 30 years ago, the 1994-95 Rockets finished off what could be the toughest path to a championship in NBA history. NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) Hakeem Olajuwon led Houston in Game 4 versus Orlando with 35 points and 15 rebounds, sending 'Clutch City' to a 113-101 home victory (box score) on June 14, 1995, and securing a series sweep. Mario Elie chipped in with 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting (81.8%) from the field, including 4-of-6 on 3-pointers (66.7%). All-Stars Shaquille O'Neal and Anfernee "Penny' Hardaway each scored 25 for the Magic. HoopsHype has more perspective on the historic journey by the sixth-seeded Rockets to a second consecutive NBA crown. According to research in which we looked at every team's path to their eventual championship wins, the 1994-95 Rockets had the toughest road ever to winning a title. The worst team they beat had a 57-25 record, and that was their Finals opponent, the Orlando Magic, who boasted a lineup featuring Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway, amongst many valuable role players. In all, the 1995 run can be summed up perfectly by the postgame quote that night from legendary head coach Rudy Tomjanovich. 'Don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion!' To this day, it remains the most recent NBA title for the Rockets. However, led by head coach Ime Udoka, the current Rockets would like to change that in the near future. With Rockets among top suitors, Suns reportedly closing in on Kevin Durant trade

The Houston Rockets are reportedly among the frontrunners to potentially trade for Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant. But how soon could a deal actually get to the finish line? Per John Gambadoro, a Suns insider for Arizona Sports 98.7 FM in Phoenix, a trade is now expected to happen by next week — or even sooner! It's possible that an agreement could be reached while not finalizing a deal until early July — should either team need to wait until the NBA's 2025-26 fiscal year for tradable salary purposes. Advertisement (In the case of the Rockets, for trade purposes, Jalen Green has a salary of $12.5 million in June and $33.3 million in July.) 'I expect Kevin will be traded from the Suns next week,' said Gambadaro, who named the 'two Texas teams' (the Rockets and San Antonio Spurs) as Durant's most desired destinations. 'Outside shot that something happens sooner.' Durant played his college basketball at University of Texas in Austin. Reports have long indicated that a deal would likely get done by the June 25 first round of the 2025 NBA draft. But if the Suns are to land a first-round asset in a Durant deal — such as the No. 10 overall pick that Houston owns — it would be to their benefit to know in advance of the draft, thereby allowing Phoenix to go through deeper pre-draft scouting processes before making a selection. Advertisement So, even as the 2025 NBA Finals continue through this weekend and into early next week, it appears that talks surrounding a blockbuster Durant trade will enter their closing stages at around that same time. Stay tuned! A 6-foot-11 forward, Durant averaged 26.6 points (52.7% FG, 43.0% on 3-pointers), 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game last season, and he earned All-Star honors for the 15th time in his Hall of Fame career. The former Most Valuable Player (MVP) and two-time NBA Finals MVP is now 36 years old, and his current contract runs through next season. Shams: Rockets, Heat, Timberwolves leading Kevin Durant trade pursuit

The Houston Rockets, Miami Heat, and Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly the teams most engaged with the Phoenix Suns regarding a trade for 15-time NBA All-Star Kevin Durant. Shams Charania, ESPN's top NBA insider, shared the latest news in Friday's appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. He said a deal could happen within the next few days, which meshes with recent reports out of Arizona. Advertisement 'All three of these teams think they're gonna contend for a championship with Kevin Durant,' Charania said in Friday's update. 'In the last 24 hours, the focus has been on the Rockets, the Heat, and the Minnesota Timberwolves.' The Timberwolves have advanced to the Western Conference finals in consecutive seasons, while the Rockets (52-30) had the West's second-best record in the 2024-25 regular season. So, there's certainly a case to be made that adding an elite scorer and future Hall of Famer could push either team over the top in 2025-26. Miami would seem to be further away, but the weaker state of the Eastern Conference could perhaps bolster its chances. Advertisement Because Durant is effectively on a one-year deal, a team acquiring him would likely want to secure his commitment to a contract extension, in order to trade significant value for him. That's where Durant's reported preference of a Texas team could potentially help the Rockets get a deal done, relative to teams in other states that might not be as confident in securing a longer-term partnership. Durant played his college basketball at University of Texas in Austin. From Houston's perspective, a deal would likely need to begin with either Jalen Green or Dillon Brooks, for trade matching salary purposes. If it is Brooks, the Rockets would also need to send a second player making more than $10 million to Phoenix, such as Jabari Smith Jr. or Reed Sheppard. Draft equity and expiring contracts, such as Jock Landale and Aaron Holiday, would also likely be part of the equation.
