Takeaways from Sixers rookie VJ Edgecombe in the summer league
The summer league is over for the Philadelphia 76ers after Friday's win over the Brooklyn Nets in Las Vegas. The Sixers played eight games in total--three in Salt Lake City and five in Vegas--and their attention now turns to making sure they lock up Quentin Grimes as well as preparing for the 2025-26 season. Prized rookie VJ Edgecombe--the No. 3 pick of the 2025 draft--was only able to play in two of those games as he dealt with a left thumb sprain. He played in the summer league opener against the Utah Jazz and delivered a terrific performance of 28 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks, and then another solid performance in Vegas of 15 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. So what are the biggest takeaways for Edgecombe? Let's dive into it: The shooting needs work This isn't necessarily a new thing. The shot was always a question mark leading into the draft, but Edgecombe shot 2-for-12 on 3-pointers in the two summer league games. Granted, he had to handle the ball a lot in those games as the summer Sixers didn't exactly have a reliable ball-handler. One has to believe he will be able to focus on just catch-and-shoot opportunities playing next to Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Paul George when the real games begin. However, 2-for-12 is still 2-for-12 so the 3-pointer certainly needs a little bit of work. What are his NBA comparisons? Seeing Edgecombe in person at practice while Sixers Wire was in Las Vegas and then watching his games on TV, there are two names that come to mind when watching him: Victor Oladipo and Dwyane Wade. The athleticism that Edgecombe brings to the table is marvelous. The way he can finish up and around taller defenders is impressive and when one combines that with the speed he has when handling the basketball? Along with the defensive prowess he did show in the two games he played? Yes. Oladipo and Wade come to mind when watching Edgecombe. How can he help right now? One has to believe that Edgecombe will play right away as a rookie. Maybe not as a starter. Grimes will probably be the starting 2-guard alongside Maxey, Embiid, George, and either Kelly Oubre Jr. or Jared McCain depending on what coach Nick Nurse wants to do. With that being said, Edgecombe is going to receive regular minutes and he can help the Sixers right now with his speed, athleticism, and ability to make winning plays despite not shooting his best. Yes, he shot just 4-for-14 in the Vegas game against the Washington Wizards, but he shot 6-for-6 from the line as he was tough to stop when getting to the basket. He can help the Sixers by providing a spark off the bench for Philadelphia moving forward. NBA insider: Quentin Grimes may have priced himself out of 76ers' range
It's no secret the Philadelphia 76ers want to bring back guard Quentin Grimes, but he may be out of their price range. Grimes became the team's primary scoring option late in the season while Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey were sidelined with injuries. In 28 games (25 starts), he averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists while shooting 46.9% from the field and 37.3% from three. The 76ers acquired Grimes and the 35th pick in the draft — who turned out to be Auburn center Johni Broome — from the Dallas Mavericks for Caleb Martin in what proved to be a steal at the trade deadline. Advertisement Grimes is a restricted free agent after the 76ers tendered him an $8.7 million qualifying offer and can match any deal he receives on the open market. The team also owns his Bird rights, allowing them to offer a 120% raise above his $4.29 million salary from last season, which equals $9.45 million. However, Grimes wants much more, according to The Athletic NBA insider Tony Jones. 'The Sixers have been in contact with Grimes and his camp, although the price may end up being steep. Grimes is looking for a contract that averages $25 million per season, league sources tell The Athletic,' Jones reports. 'He has emerged as a dynamic scoring guard, and he gives the Sixers a mix of the ability to shoot from the perimeter and get to the basket and put pressure on the rim off the dribble. Last season, Philadelphia had too little of both skill sets on its roster.' The 76ers are guard-heavy with Maxey, Jared McCain and No. 3 overall pick VJ Edgecombe, but Grimes can also play small forward if head coach Nick Nurse wants three guards on the court. Advertisement The 25th pick of the 2021 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks, Grimes has played for four teams — the Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Mavericks and 76ers. Over four seasons, he has averaged 10.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and two assists while shooting 44.4% from the field and 37.5% from three. Related Headlines

NBA rumors: 76ers ‘splash cold water' on Quentin Grimes sign-and-trade
The post NBA rumors: 76ers 'splash cold water' on Quentin Grimes sign-and-trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. With the situation around the Philadelphia 76ers and Quentin Grimes, there has been some recent reporting on the likelihood of a possible sign-and-trade. While the rumors around the 76ers standout in Grimes will continue, it seems that the question of a potential sign-and-trade has been answered. Advertisement In the latest column by Tony Jones of The Athletic, he speaks about Grimes and where things stand with Philadelphia with the expectation from the team that they will retain the guard. Even going far as to say that the team 'splashed cold water on potential sign-and-trade scenarios.' 'The proverbial elephant in the room is the restricted free agency of shooting guard Quentin Grimes, which at this point has yielded almost no movement,' Jones wrote. 'To be clear, the Sixers as of Monday night, are almost certain they are going to retain him, and splashed cold water on potential sign-and-trade scenarios, league sources told The Athletic. The issue for Grimes is that the restricted free agency market is virtually non-existent. There is almost no cap space on the market, and that puts the Sixers in a position where they are bidding against themselves.' Grimes emerged last season as a crucial piece to Philadelphia and stepped up as a scoring option with the immense amount of injuries to such stars as Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey. He has positional versatility, being able to play both guard and forward as last season after being traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the 76ers, he averaged 21.9 points in 28 games. The current expectation is that Quentin Grimes stays with the 76ers Kyle Ross-Imagn Images With $25 million reportedly being the ask of Grimes to the 76ers, it seems that there will be further negotiations on the number with the expectation that he will be back to the team. Jones would further state that his sources continue to say that both parties will 'find a way to come to terms,' though each side has a different goal. Advertisement 'League sources are confident that the Sixers and Grimes will find a way to come to terms, even if Sixers fans have grown a bit antsy waiting for a resolution, and even if the market has ground to a halt,' Jones wrote. 'At this point however, Grimes and his team are looking for a significant payout, and the Sixers are content to sit back and allow the market to play itself out. Other restricted free agents such as Golden State's Johnathan Kuminga and Chicago guard Josh Giddey are also waiting.' Jones would also go through some of the resolutions of the matter with two being that they come to an agreement and the other being a sign-and-trade. The third is that Grimes could agree to a '$8.7 million qualifying offer,' which would lead to him being an unrestricted free agent next season. "I'm all with the homies getting paid, but let's be realistic" - Pat Bev reacts to Quentin Grimes asking for $25 million a year
"I'm all with the homies getting paid, but let's be realistic" - Pat Bev reacts to Quentin Grimes asking for $25 million a year originally appeared on Basketball Network. Quentin Grimes is one of the better players in the free agent market who has yet to sign with a team. Grimes went from a regular rotation player for the Dallas Mavericks to a 20-point scorer with the Philadelphia 76ers. Advertisement However, now that he's a free agent, Quentin is reportedly asking for $25 million per year from the Sixers, which, of course, they are reluctant to give right now, given their financial situation and considering his role on the team when everybody's healthy. Former NBA player Patrick Beverley weighed in on Grimes' situation in the recent episode of his podcast. "He needs to relax," said Pat Bev. "I'm all with the homies getting paid, but let's be realistic. Get a two-year contract, put some more work in. Put some more joy back in the game, like what you've been doing. Put some more work. Get that pension, man. Get your 10 years, then do what you want to do. But make sure you get that 10 first. For real." Advertisement Grimes caught a big break with an injury-riddled Sixers team Grimes was the L.A. Clippers' No.25 overall pick from the 2021 NBA Draft out of the University of Houston, where he was the co-AAC Player of the Year and an All-American third team selection during his final NCAA year. He was then traded to the Knicks, with whom he had a decent three-year run, averaging 8.6 points per game. Quentin was also traded to Detroit and then Dallas, and he also had good stints with both squads as a reserve player. However, his career changed when the Mavs dealt him to the Sixers before last season's trade deadline, and with all the injuries that the Sixers had, Grimes got a break as a starter. The shooting guard ended up starting 25 of 28 games for Philly while averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game while playing an average of 33.7 minutes per night. The problem for Grimes is that when the Sixers get Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey all 100 percent, he isn't going to get the same opportunity. Advertisement Related: Rick Fox explains why Kobe never hung out with other teammates: "He was on a course and any minute or day wasted doing something else was going to slow him down getting to that point" Not worth the 25 right now At the end of the 2024-25 season, Grimes completed the four-year $11.1 million deal that he originally signed with the Knicks in 2021 and became a restricted free agent. According to reports, Grimes' demand for $25 million a year is holding both sides at a stalemate right now, which the Sixers think is too high. Beverley agrees with his former team on the figure. "I don't think he'll get 25. I've seen what he's done. He can go to a younger team and be explosive off the bench. I don't know if 25 is the number, though. I hope he gets 25, but I don't think 25 is the number for Quentin Grimes," he added. Advertisement Last month, the Sixers officially tendered the qualifying offer worth $8.7 million for Grimes to make him an unrestricted free agent. It also shows that the Sixers want him back. Marc Stein recently reported that Philly's figure could be in the $16 million per year range, which isn't too shabby. So perhaps Quentin should heed Pat Bev's advice and not rush things. Otherwise, he could lose everything, which would be a disaster. What we're hearing about Quentin Grimes and VJ Edgecombe observations: 76ers notes
The NBA is a little more than a week into free agency, and the Philadelphia 76ers have completed most of the business they have needed to do for their roster. On Monday afternoon, the Sixers signed point guard Kyle Lowry to a one-year deal, league sources confirmed to The Athletic, which will allow the former Cardinal Dougherty and Villanova star to play a 20th season in the NBA. The Sixers signed power forward Trendon Watford and veteran guard Eric Gordon. They gave a two-way contract to power forward Jabari Walker. And, of course, in the week before free agency, they used the No. 3 pick of the NBA Draft to select VJ Edgecombe, who christened his summer league debut with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Advertisement The proverbial elephant in the room is the restricted free agency of shooting guard Quentin Grimes, which at this point has yielded almost no movement. To be clear, the Sixers as of Monday night, are almost certain they are going to retain him, and splashed cold water on potential sign-and-trade scenarios, league sources told The Athletic. The issue for Grimes is that the restricted free agency market is virtually non-existent. There is almost no cap space on the market, and that puts the Sixers in a position where they are bidding against themselves. Grimes is an important piece to Philadelphia because he's proven to be a dynamic shooting guard capable of playing both ends of the floor. His offense has improved significantly since entering the league with the New York Knicks in 2021, particularly off the dribble. He's the one guard on the roster not named Tyrese Maxey capable of producing significant pressure on the rim off the dribble. Maybe most importantly, he's capable of playing small forward, which opens up differing lineups featuring Edgecombe and rising second-year guard Jared McCain. League sources are confident that the Sixers and Grimes will find a way to come to terms, even if Sixers fans have grown a bit antsy waiting for a resolution, and even if the market has ground to a halt. At this point however, Grimes and his team are looking for a significant payout, and the Sixers are content to sit back and allow the market to play itself out. Other restricted free agents such as Golden State's Johnathan Kuminga and Chicago guard Josh Giddey are also waiting. The choices can be simple. Grimes and the Sixers find an acceptable number and come to an agreement. Failing that by the end of the offseason, Grimes could accept Philadelphia's $8.7 million qualifying offer, which would pave the way for him to hit unrestricted free agency next summer. Or, Grimes and the Sixers could work out a sign and trade. The latter would require Philadelphia to cooperate, which, as of Monday night, makes that avenue unlikely. The argument can be made that Grimes is the fourth-best player in a Sixers uniform, behind superstar center Joel Embiid, Maxey and small forward Paul George. If the Sixers are going to make noise in what they believe to be a wide-open Eastern Conference, Grimes will likely need to play a significant role. Advertisement Besides Grimes, an order of business for the 76ers in the upcoming days is to fill their last vacant two-way slot, according to league sources. Philadelphia getting Walker on a two-way deal provides significant value. He has been a good player in the past for the Portland Trail Blazers. More importantly, Walker and Watford fill a position of need at power forward. Assuming Grimes returns to the fold, it's clear the strength of the Sixers roster lies in their backcourt. Maxey and Grimes are both three-level offensive players who are capable of putting up a bunch of points in different ways. Had he not missed most of the season with a knee injury, McCain would have certainly been in the thick of the NBA's Rookie of the Year race. His shooting and ability to move without the ball provide a stark contrast to Grimes and Maxey's ability off the dribble. Edgecombe has played one summer league game. His athleticism is something you can't teach and it's something that will be welcome on Philadelphia's roster. His performance in Saturday night's debut against the Utah Jazz was something of a revelation. He showed an ability to get to any spot on the floor off the dribble whenever he wanted. He showed an ability to make mid-range jumpers, something that eluded him for the majority of his freshman season at Baylor. He also showed an ability to make correct reads out of pick and roll. 'Right now, I'm just trying to do whatever I can to contribute and get on the floor,' Edgecombe said. 'So, I want to figure out what the team needs and I want to figure out a way to fit in.' Saturday night was one game but the flashes Edgecombe showed were ones of a player with the potential to be a star. It is unlikely to happen this upcoming season, but the Sixers have to be happy with what they saw in Edgecombe's summer league debut. Advertisement If Philadelphia is almost done with its roster, the question will be: Is it enough? Yes, the Eastern Conference looks to be wide open. For the Sixers, health will always will be a major concern and emerging storyline. And, as always, how much the Sixers can get out of Embiid will go a long way toward determining and establishing a ceiling. Last season, the Sixers didn't have the luxury of health. This season, that has to change, if Philadelphia wants to rebound from the disappointment of last year. Edgecombe suffered a thumb contusion in his debut and didn't play on Monday night. He's considered day-to-day going forward, as the team finishes up summer league in Salt Lake City and transitions to Las Vegas later in the week. While it does so, seeing Edgecombe in future games will continue to be something to monitor. (Photo of Quentin Grimes: David Dow / NBAE via Getty Images)
