Ranchi, Aug 15 (PTI) Maintaining that better law and order is key for the development of any state, Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Friday said Jharkhand has waged a war against menaces like Naxalism and illegal drugs trade.
The governor made the statement after hoisting the national flag at the 79th Independence Day function in Ranchi, in a departure from tradition.
'Stringent action is being taken against Naxalism, and as a result, 197 Naxalites were arrested, 17 killed, and 10 were forced to surrender," he said.
Gangwar said the state government destroyed opium cultivation on thousands of acres in a severe jolt to the illegal drugs trade.
Speaking on the state's welfare initiatives, he said the government has waived off farm loans worth Rs 2,300 crore, benefitting 5 lakh farmers.
'The government is committed to augmenting the state's infrastructure. Projects worth Rs 13,000 crore to build highways of 3,800 km are underway in the state," he said.
Gangwar said the World Bank has applauded the state's Maiya Samman Yojna, under which 51 lakh women are getting Rs 2,500 as monthly assistance.
As per established protocol, the chief minister hoists the tricolour at Morabadi in Ranchi, while the governor presides over the ceremony in Dumka, the sub-capital of the state.
However, due to the death of JMM founder Shibu Soren, his son, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, is camping at his ancestral village of Nemra to perform the 'shradh' rituals. PTI NAM SOM

ED raids across two cities over reopened case against Tamil Nadu minister, DMK says bid to deflect from ‘vote chori'
Officers from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched simultaneous searches on Saturday at the properties of Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister I Periyasamy, his family members, and linked premises in Dindigul and Chennai, reviving a years-old disproportionate assets case that had been dismissed but was recently reopened by the Madras High Court. About a dozen ED officials, split into three teams and backed by armed Central Reserve Police Force personnel, arrived at three residential locations in Dindigul — Durairaj Nagar, Vallalar Nagar, and Seelapadi — around 7:30 am. Local DMK cadre quickly gathered near the sites as police tightened security. The searches targeted the minister's home, as well as that of his son and Dindigul East MLA I P Senthil Kumar and his daughter Indra. In Chennai, ED teams conducted searches at Periyasamy's official bungalow on Greenways Road under heavy Central Armed Police Force protection. Officers also visited the MLAs' hostel at the Government Omandurar Estate. Periyasamy, a senior leader of the ruling DMK, his wife Suseela, and sons Senthil Kumar and Prabhu had been acquitted by a Dindigul trial court in a Rs 2.01 crore disproportionate assets case dating back to 2006–2010. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption alleged that the family had amassed assets in excess of their known income during his earlier tenure as minister. The acquittal was overturned in April by Justice P Velmurugan of the Madras High Court, who ordered a fresh trial. The family has appealed in the Supreme Court, with a hearing scheduled for August 18. The DMK responded sharply, framing the raids as politically motivated and timed to distract from what the party called the BJP's own electoral misconduct. 'This is an attempt to divert attention from vote chori (theft),' said DMK organisation secretary R S Bharathi, invoking a phrase used by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to describe alleged fraud. In a formal statement, Bharathi said: 'The BJP stands exposed for indulging in electoral fraud by using the Election Commission. The country is shocked over this. To divert attention from the illegal vote chori, the Enforcement Directorate is conducting searches at premises linked to Periyasamy.' Bharathi said the DMK 'would neither fear the ED nor Modi,' and accused the BJP of weaponising state institutions: 'The BJP was using empowered and autonomous bodies as its election instruments.' While the ED has not disclosed the specific trigger for Saturday's searches, the revival of the disproportionate assets case has heightened political tensions as Periyasamy remains an influential figure in the DMK. The outcome of the Supreme Court hearing next week could determine whether the disproportionate assets case proceeds to trial again.

India, South Korea resolve to set new industrial ambition in high-tech sectors
Agency: PTI New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) India and South Korea on Saturday resolved to expand their strategic partnership by setting new 'industrial ambition" in the areas of semiconductor, defence, clean energy, and artificial intelligence. Ways to ramp up the overall bilateral cooperation figured prominently in talks between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his visiting South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Jaishankar and Hyun agreed to set new industrial ambitions, especially in high-tech sectors such as AI, semiconductors, clean energy, shipbuilding, and the defence industry. The ministers took stock of bilateral cooperation, including in the political, security, trade and economy, technological, and people-to-people domains, it said. In a social media post, Jaishankar described the talks as 'productive". 'Held productive discussions on advancing our bilateral cooperation in trade, manufacturing, maritime and people-to-people exchanges as well as new opportunities in AI, semiconductors, clean energy and defence," he said. Jaishankar said he and Hyun also exchanged perspectives on the Indo-Pacific region and contemporary global developments. 'Appreciated our deepening convergences and growing engagement as our Special Strategic Partnership completes 10 years," he added. In his opening remarks at the meeting, Jaishankar also thanked Seoul for its condemnation of the horrific April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The external affairs minister also made a mention of Seoul's support to an Indian parliamentary delegation that visited South Korea in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. 'You have been barely a month in the job (as the foreign minister), the fact that you are here literally a day after your National Day, and our National Day, says a lot really about the value we attach to the relationship," Jaishankar said. The India-South Korea ties have been on an upswing in the last few years, especially in the areas of trade and defence. The MEA said Jaishankar and Hyun reaffirmed the strong and growing 'special strategic partnership" between the two countries. The partnership is rooted in shared democratic values, mutual trust, shared economic interests, and commitment to regional and global peace and stability, it said. 'The ministers also shared their assessment on regional and global issues of common interest," the MEA said in a statement.
