Cattle, buffaloes vaccinated to contain spread of haemorrhagic septicaemia
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Veterinary Services Department (JPV) has vaccinated 224 cattle and buffaloes to prevent the spread of haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) here.
Its director, Dr Anun Man, said the vaccination covered livestock within a five-kilometre radius from the outbreak site, first detected on April 7.
"Control measures and quarantine began on April 24 after the outbreak was confirmed, with 25% of the livestock vaccinated in two days.
"We are concerned that if uncontrolled, the outbreak could affect Hari Raya Aidiladha sacrificial rites, as livestock movement requires health permits. The high demand for sacrificial animals also raises the risk of illegal imports,' she said when inspecting the vaccination process at Kampung Manir here today.
Dr Anun said that free-range farming of buffaloes in Terengganu posed a challenge, as JPV needs to provide pens for quarantine and vaccination.
"We urge farmers to bring free-range livestock into pens and contact us for vaccination.
"Buffaloes, especially in extreme weather conditions, are at higher risk of HS,' she said, adding that the Terengganu JPV administered 11,731 HS vaccinations last year.

Hourly update on water levels at UMS' tank
Published on: Wednesday, June 04, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 04, 2025 Text Size: Shahelmey explained that discrepancies in reports arose when student leaders accused the department of making false claims. Kota Kinabalu: The State Water Department will now provide an hourly update on water levels at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah's R13 tank, said Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. He said the move aims to help UMS manage its pumping schedule more effectively and ensure better water distribution on campus. 'A new water level indicator has been ordered and should be installed within one or two weeks. I will revisit UMS once that is completed to ensure smooth coordination between both parties,' he told reporters after distributing fresh beef from 30 cows to the needy in Putatan, in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha, Tuesday. He was responding to UMS Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansur's strong criticism of the Water Department's May 29 statement, which claimed the university had always received sufficient water and that internal technical issues were to blame for any disruptions. Shahelmey said the department's records showed consistent supply since May 19. However, he explained that from May 14 to 19, one of UMS' pumps was down, possibly affecting water delivery to the campus. 'That issue has since been resolved. This coordination is especially crucial as students are sitting for their exams in June,' the State Works Minister added. Shahelmey explained that discrepancies in reports arose when student leaders accused the department of making false claims. Site inspections two weeks ago revealed that while the department recorded sufficient water levels in the R13 tank, UMS reported otherwise, due to a faulty tank indicator that led to miscommunication. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kelantan man seriously injured after being gored by cow meant for Aidiladha sacrifice
KOTA BARU, June 3 — A 35-year-old man was seriously injured after being gored by a cow he was raising as livestock in Kampung Neman, near Jelawat, Bachok, last Friday. Kelantan Health Department director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin said the victim sustained serious abdominal injuries from a deep and wide wound caused by the animal's horns. 'The victim was first taken to Bachok Hospital for treatment, after his family rushed him there following the incident. However, he was later referred to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital (HRPZ II) here, where he successfully underwent surgery,' he told Bernama today. He said the victim's condition was now stable, but the hospital would monitor the wound for possible infection. It is understood that the man was gored by the cow when it suddenly turned on him as it was being ushered into the pen at about 7pm. The cow was to be sold and handed over to a buyer in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration. — Bernama
