Oman's OQBI achieves record production in 2024
MUSCAT: OQ Base Industries (SFZ) SAOG (OQBI), the majority Omani state-owned integrated producer of methanol, ammonia and LPG, achieved record output in 2024, capping a year of significant milestones that also included a successful Initial Public Offering (IPO).
Accordingly, OQBI posted a 19.7-per cent uptick in revenues, which climbed to RO 234.8 million last year, up from RO 196.2 million in 2023. Driving this growth was a significant rise in earnings from methanol exports, which jumped 44.4 per cent to RO 111.6 million, up from RO 77.3 million in 2023.
Net profit however declined 14.9 per cent to RO 40.4 million, compared to RO 47.5 million in 2023, primarily due to a 50.4-per cent increase in the notional provision of rich gas as feedstock, among other factors.
OQBI Board Chairman Ali al Lawati described 2024 as a 'period of significant transformation and growth' for the company. 'We adeptly navigated various challenges, seized emerging opportunities, and delivered exceptional results across all areas of our operations.'
'A key milestone in our journey was the successful completion of an Initial Public Offering (IPO), where 49 per cent of our share capital was offered to the public. The shares commenced trading on the Muscat Stock Exchange (MSX) on December 15, 2024, marking a pivotal moment in our corporate history,' he stated in the company's Board of Directors' report for the year.
Significantly, production targets were exceeded across all product streams in 2024. Methanol and ammonia output jumped to 1,538k MT in 2024, up from 1,168k MT a year earlier. The increase was due to effective plant utilisation – 106 per cent for methanol and 113 per cent for ammonia.
The LPG plant, on the other hand, achieved 117 per cent utilisation, contributing to a 8.5-per cent increase in LPG output. Production of LPG products – propane, butane, condensate and LPG (cooking gas) – rose to 364k MT in 2024, up from 336k MT a year earlier.
Commenting on the company's operational performance, OQBI CEO Khalid al Asmi added: 'Production at the methanol and ammonia plants has reached its highest level since the commissioning of the plants in October 2024. Furthermore, the LPG plant has surpassed its annual nameplate production of 350,000 MT for the first time in our history.'
Located in Salalah Free Zone, adjoining the Port of Salalah, OQBI – part of OQ Group – owns and operates an integrated complex of three advanced plants with a combined nameplate production capacity of 1,816 ktpa. The plants process rich and lean natural gas feedstock supplied under long-term agreements with the wholly state-owned gas shipper, the Integrated Gas Company (IGC), through the gas transmission network.
While part of the LPG (cooking gas) is sold domestically in Dhofar Governorate, the rest of OQBI's products are sold pursuant to long-term, arm's-length exclusive take-or-pay offtake agreements with OQ Trading for export to end markets, principally in Asia and the MENA region and, to a lesser extent, Europe and Africa.

Sharjah launches proactive plan for 5,600 trips during Eid Al Adha holiday
The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has put together a special plan for the upcoming Eid Al Adha holiday. This initiative is aimed at making sure travellers can enjoy comfortable and safe transportation as they celebrate the Eid. With an increase in people wanting to travel during this festive time, the SRTA is stepping up its services to ensure everyone can move smoothly between different areas in Sharjah and beyond. Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, the head of the SRTA, highlighted the importance of being well-prepared during holidays. He noted that during the Eid holiday in 2025, which runs from June 5 to 8, there will be a noticeable rise in public transport users. To handle this, the SRTA has made plans to operate 180 buses on various routes, aiming to complete around 5,600 trips over the four days. During peak times, buses will come every 5 minutes instead of the usual 45-minute wait. This means shorter waiting times and more convenience for everyone traveling. The authority is committed to making travel easy for people visiting family or exploring popular destinations, both within the emirate and outside it. They are also increasing staff at busy bus stations, especially the Jubail Bus Station, which will be open from early morning until late at night to accommodate the larger number of passengers expected during this busy holiday. The Authority has improved bus services in Sharjah City for the Eid holiday, making travel easier for everyone. They are running a total of 1,144 bus trips each day across 12 different routes, using 104 buses that connect to 543 stops around the city. During the Eid Al Adha holiday, there will be a special boat service operating between Sharjah and Dubai. Abdul Aziz Al Jarwan, who is in charge of transport at the local authority, announced that there will be four daily trips. These boats will leave from the Aquarium Station in Sharjah and arrive at Al Ghubaiba Station in Dubai, working together with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority. Al Jarwan shared that the Authority is working closely with the Omani transport company, Mwasalat, to run international route 203. This route connects Sharjah with Muscat, the capital of Oman, and offers two flights each day. This service is expected to encourage tourism between the two countries, especially during the Eid holidays. Passengers can board at Jubail station and travel to Al Athaiba station, making stops along the way. Tickets can be purchased online through Mwasalat Oman's website or at their service points. WAM

He noted that Route 22 will not be in service during the Eid holiday because the Souq Al Haraj market is closed. To make things easier for passengers, they have made some changes, including quicker arrival times and more ticket sales points at bus stations and inside buses, to minimize delays and crowding. To manage passenger flow, especially at the Jubail station, the teams have stepped up their preparations. They have increased the number of staff on duty and are providing the necessary support to ensure smooth operations. They are also allowing people to book bus tickets in advance and are keeping a close eye on how things are running to maintain a high level of service. Maritime transport During the Eid Al Adha holiday, there will be a special boat service operating between Sharjah and Dubai. It also welcomes feedback from the public regarding bus and taxi services, helps with reports of lost bags, and answers questions about the services offered across the emirate, including Sharjah City and other regions. He highlighted that the call center plays a vital role in connecting with the community, gathering and analyzing feedback to improve services in the future.

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan successfully concludes official visit to Oman
Via X (@DXBMediaOffice) His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, has concluded an official visit to Oman, deepening cooperation between the two Gulf neighbours. During the visit, Sheikh Hamdan was received by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, ruler of Oman at Al-Baraka Palace in Muscat. The leaders reaffirmed the deep-rooted historical and fraternal ties between the UAE and Oman and discussed ways to strengthen collaboration across a wide range of sectors, including economy, trade, tourism, culture, defence, and technology.
