Hollywood heir commits suicide in Los Angeles jail while awaiting triple murder trial
Haskell was accused of killing his wife and in-laws on Nov. 6, 2023, and previously pleaded not guilty. The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner determined that Haskell committed suicide by "incised wounds to bilateral upper extremities." He was found dead on July 12.
Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in an earlier statement that prosecutors were set to reveal new evidence at a preliminary hearing, which included an alleged affair with a 27-year-old woman. According to Hochman, the new evidence also revealed that a bloody knife with all three victims' DNA was found in the possession of Haskell.
Haskell was found dead in his jail cell.
"Instead of standing before a judge and answering for the crimes he's been charged with, the defendant managed to escape justice," Hochman said in a statement. "This is one last cruel act by someone who did the most horrific things for reasons we will never entirely know. A family that has been dealing with unimaginable loss now has been robbed of their chance to face him, hold him accountable for his barbaric actions, and openly share their grief and their cherished memories of their loved ones."
Haskell's attorney previously told Fox News Digital that a court assessment that his client was at risk of self-harm is "wild speculation."
He was facing three murder charges for the deaths of Mei Haskell, 37, her mother Yanxiang Wang, 64, and her stepfather Gaoshan Li, 71.
Haskell was facing life in prison without parole if convicted of the murder charges.
After Haskell allegedly killed the three individuals, prosecutors allege he gave a group of laborers $500 to take heavy trash bags out of the home where the victims lived. One of the workers looked inside the bag and allegedly saw human remains, prompting a call to police.

Chaotic scene in Midtown Manhattan as shots ring out in office tower, killing 4 including police officer
Fear and confusion were rampant after a gunman shot and killed four people and wounded another in a Midtown Manhattan office tower Monday evening before, authorities said, taking his own life. Police identified him as Shane D. Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said surveillance video shows the suspect leaving a double-parked black BMW alone and entering the building on Park Avenue with an M4 rifle in his right hand. He immediately opened fire at NYPD officer Didarul Islam, killing him. The gunman then shot a woman who'd taken shelter behind a pillar, then moved through the lobby, peppering it with gunfire, officials said. He then shot a security guard who'd taken cover behind a security desk. Another man who was wounded told police at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital he was shot in the lobby, Tisch said. The police commissioner said at one point the gunman was waiting for an elevator to arrive and when it did, a woman came out but he let her to walk by unharmed. The gunman then took the elevator to the 33rd floor offices of Rudin Management and "began walking the floor, firing rounds as he traveled," Tisch said, killing one person before walking down the hallway and shooting himself in the chest. The building houses the headquarters of the NFL and Blackstone, one of the world's largest investment firms, and has numerous other well-known tenants. Nekeisha Lewis was eating dinner with friends on the nearby plaza when she heard gunfire. "It felt like it was a quick two shots and then it was rapid fire," she told the AP. Windows shattered and a man ran from the building saying, "Help, help. I'm shot." Lewis said. Kyle Marshall, 38, was working at a nearby Morgan Stanley office when his mother texted him about an active-shooter incident, asking if he was OK, Reuters reports. "Then she texted me the address, and I was, like, 'Oh my God. That's right next door to my building,'" he said. Marshall lives in the San Francisco area but comes to New York monthly for work. "It doesn't make me feel less safe to be in Manhattan," he said. "The police responded quickly." A man who only gave CBS News his first name, Kendall, works nearby. "After things calmed down," he said, "yu start to see just, just worry. It went fromkind of frantic, 'Are you safe?' ... and then it went straight to worry. And just hoping for the best."

Police officer killed in Midtown Manhattan shooting was an immigrant father with another child on the way
Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old New York Police Department officer, was among four people killed Monday evening in Midtown Manhattan when a gunman stormed the lobby of the sprawling 345 Park Avenue office tower and opened fire. Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh who New York officials have described as a hero, leaves behind two young sons and his wife – who is pregnant with their third child. NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said Islam had been off-duty, but in uniform and working security in the building when he was shot and killed by 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura. 'He was doing the job that we asked him to do,' said Tisch at a news conference Monday night. 'He put himself in harm's way, he made the ultimate sacrifice – shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city. He died as he lived, a hero.' Didarul had served in the NYPD's 47th precinct in the Bronx for three and a half years, Mayor Eric Adams said at the news conference. He was his father's only son, said Adams. The mayor met with Islam's family earlier Monday night and told them 'he was a hero and we admire him for putting his life on the line,' he said. 'Everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person,' Adams said. 'He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers. He embodies what this city is all about. He's a true-blue New Yorker, not only in a uniform he wore.' New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and other police departments from as far away as Los Angeles have posted messages in honor of the fallen officer and expressing condolences to his family. 'Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department,' the NYPD posted on X. 'He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today. We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will forever honor his legacy.' Police say Tamura shot five people, including Islam, before fatally shooting himself in the chest. One person survived and is in critical, but stable condition, authorities said.
