Alleged burglar drove stolen car on path as kids were going to school, court hears

The Journal24-05-2025

AN ALLEGED BURGLAR stole a car from a house and mounted a footpath as young children were going to school in Dublin before crashing into a signpost, a court was told.
Vladislavs Jukums, 28, of Highfield Crescent, Swords, Co. Dublin, was arrested on Friday and charged with motor theft, two counts of burglary, and criminal damage on 23 May in his locality.
The father of one appeared before Judge Catherine Ghent, who set his bail at €300, requiring a €100 lodgement from him and approval of a €500 independent surety.
However, she stipulated that the bail, with various conditions, including a curfew and a bar from returning to Swords, cannot be taken up until he gets an appropriate new address.
Judge Ghent remanded him in custody to appear again next week.
Garda Shane Murphy told a contest bail hearing that at just 7.41 am, he responded to a vehicle driving recklessly and dangerously in Applewood estate, Swords.
On arrival, he said, he saw a 2022-reg Toyota C-HR driving at speed with a flat tyre. Garda Murphy said that he activated his lights and sirens to indicate this vehicle to stop, but the Toyota continued at speed towards the patrol car before it 'mounted the kerb and drove along the footpath to evade gardai'.
The court heard that pedestrians and young schoolchildren had to move to avoid being struck.

The car still failed to stop for gardaí and subsequently lost control and crashed on the roundabout at the end of Brackenstown Road, Swords, Co. Dublin, where it hit a signpost on the footpath with pedestrians present.
Garda Murphy alleged the accused was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, which was confirmed to have been subject to an unauthorised taking during a burglary at Castleview Park, Swords, Co Dublin.
Judge Ghent was told the owner woke to a man entering her bedroom before taking her car keys.
It was claimed that the accused carried out a second burglary at nearby Ashton Broc, Swords, Co. Dublin on the same date. The accused attempted to break into the front door of the address by smashing a rock several times against the glass pane of the front door, causing damage.
The accused allegedly walked towards a vehicle and attempted to smash the front driver's window with a rock.
According to the garda, the accused then walked around the side of the house and gained access to his address through the back door, but nothing of note was removed from the address.
The garda raised concerns that unemployed Jukums was not residing at his stated address, his mother's home and that he was staying with his partner, who lived close to the two burgled houses.
Defence solicitor Carol Slattery queried whether young children would have been on their way to school at the time, and the garda contended that it was in a built-up area where people started early.
The solicitor stressed that Mr Jukums, who has yet to enter a plea, had the presumption of innocence and could face a lengthy period in custody on remand while the Director of Public Prosecutions prepared the case. Ms Slattery said her client would obey strict conditions.
The accused, who is on social welfare, was granted legal aid. The judge warned him that he must sign on at his new local garda station when he is released, provide gardaí with a contact phone number and have no contact with witnesses.

Israeli authorities deny legal counsel to 70-year-old Irish activist facing deportation

ISRAELI AUTHORITIES HAVE brought 70-year-old Irish woman D. Murphy before the courts without allowing her access to legal representation, nor informing her solicitor of the proceedings, according to several local pro-Palestinian activists. Máire Ní Mhurchú, an activist originally from Cork who goes by the name D. Murphy, has been held in custody in Israel since 1 June, when Israeli authorities issued what local activist groups have described as an 'unjust deportation order' . Murphy was arrested alongside Swedish national Suzanne Björk, who has since been deported from Israel to Athens . The two women were detained shortly after Israeli forces declared the village a 'closed military zone'. Murphy was initially held at Ben Gurion Airport, before being transferred to Givon Prison in Ramla on Tuesday. Advertisement In a statement released today, the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a Palestine-based group, stated that Murphy was brought before a judge yesterday 'without legal representation and without her lawyer being notified'. According to the ISM, legal counsel was denied despite Murphy's request and her solicitor's repeated attempts to contact her through the prison service. 'Murphy told her family, during a phone call she was permitted to make, that she had been deliberately given an incorrect phone number for her lawyer,' said ISM spokesperson Mariam. Mariam added that the last time Murphy managed to speak with her solicitor was on Monday, noting: 'As of today, we still do not know the outcome of the hearing.' 'These tactics—denying legal advice—are familiar to activists in solidarity with Palestinians, as Israeli authorities continue to act with impunity,' she continued. She also said ISM activists are 'deeply concerned' for D. Murphy, who they believe will likely be deported from Israel soon. 'As it stands, we do not know the outcome or what the next steps will be.' Cork man accused of attempted murder in arson attack pleads guilty to other related charges

A facing the prospect of trial by judge and jury for attempted murder arising out of an arson attack on a house in Cork city on Christmas Day 2023 confessed to other related charges today. Shane Casey, aged 32, of Shanowen, Rathcormac, Co Cork, was arraigned on three charges at the Central Criminal Court today and pleaded guilty to all three of them. He did not plead guilty to another charge on the indictment — namely the attempted murder of Billy Murphy, a man in his 60s, owner of the house at Dyke Parade, Cork, where the arson was carried out. However, defence senior counsel Ray Boland conceded that the plea of guilty to certain charges was entered on the basis that the full facts of the case would be given at the sentencing hearing. Mr Boland asked for free legal aid to be extended to include the preparation of a psychiatric report on Shane Casey. Ms Justice Eileen Creedon acceded to that application. The case was adjourned until October 6 when it is anticipated a date will be set for sentencing. Detective Garda Brian Barron originally charged Casey with the attempted murder of Mr Murphy, but there was no plea to that charge. There was a plea of guilty to a charge of assault causing harm to Mr Murphy, production of an article, namely a blade, in the course of the assault, and finally causing criminal damage to the house and neighbouring properties with intent to endanger life. Evidence It was previously alleged when the case first came before the courts that the accused set fire to the house on Dyke Parade, Cork, just after 6pm on December 25, 2023, when four people were present in the house and that the accused man stood outside swinging a blade when the first person ran from the burning building, telling him, 'You are going to die here tonight.' Referring to CCTV and other evidence, Det Garda Barron said: 'At 6.05pm, he exits and stands looking in the open front door at the fire taking hold. At 6.06pm, it is alleged that he closes the front door and attempts to barricade the front door from the outside, using a piece of timber to jam to the side and then under the door. 'It is alleged he takes a blade from his pocket and holds it out in front of him and waits outside. At 6.08pm, the front door bursts open and [one of the men] attempts to escape the now blazing house. "It was alleged he said (to one injured party), 'My name is Shane Casey and you remember me from two days ago — you are going to die here tonight.'' It was further alleged that one woman had to be rescued from the roof and that it took six units of the fire service more than six hours to bring the fire under control and make the building safe. The fire caused thousands of euro in damage, the detective said. Jane Hyland prosecution senior counsel said that victim impact statements would be prepared in advance of sentencing. This case had been listed for trial by judge and jury at the Central Criminal Court on June 18 but it will now be removed from that list.

‘We're not really threatening' – Irish activist, 71, arrested in West Bank by Israel did nothing ‘to warrant detention'

A SWEDISH woman arrested by Israeli authorities in the West Bank along with Irish woman Deirdre 'D' Murphy insists they did nothing wrong. Furious Susanne Bjork, who was 1 Irish woman Deirdre 'D' Murphy was arrested in the West Bank Ms Murphy, who is 71 and originally from ISM said Ms Murphy was arrested in the village of Khalet Al-Daba'a in Masafer Yatta in the southern part of the occupied West Bank. They were interrogated in a local police station accused of being in a military zone, as parts of Masafer Yatta have been designated by Israeli authorities a closed military zone since the 1980s. Speaking to Most read in Irish News 'People are absolutely terrified and the escalation of violence and settler violence and demolitions happening all over the West Bank is just horrendous and no one's reporting on this. 'I mean our governments are completely ignoring the situation not just in Gaza, but also in the West Bank. It's people like D and myself who are highlighting the situation.' This was the first time that Ms Bjork had been arrested, but it was not the first time she had experienced such intimidation. She explained: 'Usually that would have meant a ban from a certain area, perhaps, that you were not allowed to enter that area. Most read in The Irish Sun 'But my lawyer said that this is a new policy that they've implemented in the last few months, where they arrest people and deport people straight away and send them to immigration hearing at Ben Gurion. 'And this is, I think, quite a new policy. Israeli military says it began extensive ground operations in northern and southern Gaza 'They're just trying to get rid of anyone who tried to document the reality of the occupation and the war crimes taking place.' When asked if she would return, Ms Bjork said she would if she could, but it seemed unlikely because she did not receive any of the documentation she was promised at the police hearing. 'They were supposed to provide us with an English transcript of the interview. I never received that. I also didn't receive any protocol from the immigration hearing.' AWAITING COURT HEARING Ms Murphy was initially held in a detention centre at Ben Gurion Airport. However, ISM said she will be transported to another facility to await a court hearing. Her pal added: 'The immigration officer brought up charges, saying that we were threatening and humiliating soldiers and police. 'D is a 71-year-old woman, I am a 48-year-old woman. We're not really threatening. We definitely wouldn't be threatening heavily armed men.' Ms Bjork said that Ms Murphy was still being detained because she had decided to contest her charges, rather than agree to leave. 'FALSE ACCUSATIONS' She explained: "D is still detained. After we had done the immigration hearing, we had separate hearings, but I was told that my visa had been cancelled. I was now in Israel illegally and I was detained. "Legally, there's a three-day turnaround for them to deport you, but I had signed a paper to say I was willing to take the first flight out. "I was put on a plane to Athens. D, however, decided to fight this deportation, because we had done nothing wrong. These are completely false accusations." She added: "And so, she has remained in detention, waiting to see a judge, which I don't know when that may be."
