Australia edges Saudi Arabia to win U20 Asian Cup

SHENZHEN, China, March 2, (Xinhua): Steven Hall saved the decisive spot-kick as Australia defeated Saudi Arabia 5-4 in a penalty shootout to win the AFC U20 Asian Cup at the Baoan Sports Center Stadium.
The match ended 1-1 in regular time, with neither team able to break the deadlock in extra time. Both teams converted their first four attempts in the shootout, but Australia scored in the decisive fifth round. At the same time, Saudi Arabia's Bassam Hazazi saw his shot saved by goalkeeper Hall, securing a 5-4 victory for Australia.
Saudi Arabia equalized as Hall was just unable to keep Talal Haji's header from crossing the goal line, with the goal confirmed after a VAR review.
Both sides missed a handful of chances in the second half before a fruitless additional 30 minutes of extra time led to the decisive shootout.
Australia broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when Alexander Badolato's cross into the box was deflected into the path of Louis Agosti, whose shot from just outside the box sailed past Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Hamed Yousef and into the bottom-left corner.

Test final must trump IPL, says S Africa coach

JOHANNESBURG: Coach Shukri Conrad said on Tuesday that South Africa's players must prioritise the World Test Championship final over the closing stages of the Indian Premier League. Conrad said there was an agreement that South Africa's players would return from India on May 26 –- the day after the original date of the IPL final. This would enable them to have time to prepare for the Test final against Australia at Lord's in London from June 11 to 15. He said he did not expect that to change, despite the IPL being rescheduled to finish on June 3 after a postponement caused by recent hostilities between India and Pakistan. 'Our initial agreement with the IPL and the Indian board was that our players would return on the 26th,' said Conrad. He cautioned that discussions between Cricket South Africa and the Indian board were still taking place. 'As it stands, we're not budging on this. We want our players back on the 26th.' Conrad and captain Temba Bavuma both expressed support for star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who will spearhead the bowling attack after serving a one-month ban for recreational drug use. 'I am thankful that the process that was followed was in line with world standards,' said Conrad. 'I wasn't going to pre-empt anything and we allowed the process to run as it did. 'KG (Rabada) is a massive player for us. The big thing for us was to close ranks around him and ensure that he is in a good space. 'He's served his sentence and all that I am interested in now is KG producing the sort of performances we know he is capable of.' 'Focus on individual' Bavuma said he had had private talks with Rabada, who he described as a close friend. 'From a captaincy point of view, the process has passed and it's now a focus on the individual, the human, and making sure he gets the support he needs and that he will be in the best state to perform.' Asked whether he expected Rabada to face criticism or sledging from the Australians, Bavuma said the fast bowler had faced controversy before, notably in South Africa's most recent series against Australia in 2017/18. Rabada was initially suspended after a confrontation with Australian captain Steve Smith, who was himself banned after the 'sandpaper-gate' Test at Newlands in Cape Town. Rabada appealed successfully against his ban and finished as player of the series. 'We saw how that series ended and how he performed,' said Bavuma. But Bavuma admitted that the situation this time was different. 'There will be a lot of people who will point fingers at him, some who have skeletons in their own closet, but I am not one of those people.' Bavuma said he was fully fit after missing South Africa's domestic four-day series final in April because of a recurrence of an elbow injury. Batsman David Bedingham has recovered from a broken toe suffered while batting for Durham in an English county championship match against Yorkshire in April. Conrad said he expected South Africa to go into the final as underdogs but said that was purely on the basis of experience. 'When we play our best cricket we've every chance of beating Australia. I give us more than an even chance,' he said. The players will assemble in England on May 31 ahead of a warm-up match against Zimbabwe in Arundel from June 3 to 6. Squad: Temba Bavuma (captain), David Bedingham, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne (wkt). – AFP

Rabada leads South African pace attack for World Test final

JOHANNESBURG: Kagiso Rabada will lead a South African pace bowling attack weakened by injury in the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's in London from June 11 to 15. Coach Shukri Conrad on Tuesday named a 15-man squad which includes six pace bowlers. But three of South Africa's fastest bowlers missed selection. Anrich Nortje, Gerald Coetzee and Nandre Burger have all been hit by injuries before and during the championship cycle. Rabada, who recently returned to cricket after serving a ban for recreational drug use, will be backed up by tall left-arm fast bowler Marco Jansen as well as right-arm seamers in Dane Paterson, Lungi Ngidi and all-rounders Wiaan Mulder and Corbin Bosch. Ngidi missed the home series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in December and January because of a groin injury but played in the Champions Trophy one-day competition in Pakistan in February and March. 'I'm particularly pleased to welcome Lungi back in the side,' said Conrad. 'He's put in the work and offers us an experienced option with the ball.' Paterson, 36, is currently playing for English county Middlesex, who are based at Lord's. There are two spinners in the squad, left-armers Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy. Maharaj suffered a recurrence of a groin injury in March, which ruled him out of the rest of the South African domestic season, but has been passed fit to play. South Africa's batsmen have also had injury problems. Captain Temba Bavuma missed the domestic four-day final in April because of a recurrence of an elbow injury, while David Bedingham suffered a fractured toe while batting for Durham in an English county championship match in April. Conrad said playing in the final would be a 'special moment' for his players. 'Over the past 18 months, we've worked hard to build a competitive red-ball unit, and this achievement reflects that progress. 'A key part of our success has been consistency in selection, and we've stuck with the core group of players who have been part of this WTC cycle. We've selected a balanced squad for the conditions we expect at Lord's.' South Africa qualified for the final by winning eight of their 12 matches in the championship, including their last seven in a row. Two of their three defeats were against New Zealand in a series which South Africa effectively forfeited because Cricket South Africa gave priority to the SA20 franchise competition. Seven of the squad are currently involved with the Indian Premier League and three in English county cricket. The players will assemble in England on May 31 ahead of a warm-up match against Zimbabwe in Arundel from June 3 to 6. Squad: Temba Bavuma (captain), David Bedingham, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne (wkt). – AFP

Mixed news for Arsenal one week away from Real Madrid clash

LONDON, April 2, (Xinhua): There was good and bad news for Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta just a week away from his side's UEFA Champions League quarterfinal first leg at home to Real Madrid. The good news was the return of England winger Bukayo Saka after suffering a hamstring injury in December last year. The 23-year-old came on as a 66th-minute substitute in Tuesday's 2-1 win at home to Fulham and needed just seven minutes before netting Arsenal's second goal of the night. Saka's importance to Arsenal cannot be underestimated, with the stats showing that in the 16 Premier League games before his injury Arsenal averaged 2.1 goals every game, while that average dropped sharply to just 1.5 per match since. Arteta described Saka's goal as a "beautiful moment," adding that it was easy to see "how much our people love, respect and admire Bukayo." However, Arteta's team is without Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori, who are both suffering from knee injuries picked up over the last few days. The coach then saw central defender Gabriel forced off with a hamstring problem in the first half before Jurrien Timber limped off with another knee problem in the second half. "Calafiori, Ben White, Jurrien and Gabriel Magalhaes - you can imagine how I feel losing those four players in the defensive line in one week," lamented Arteta after the game. With Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, and Rodrygo ready to visit the Emirates Stadium in a week in arguably Arsenal's biggest game of the season, it's not hard to imagine Arteta's frustration, even though he insists he has "four more players to come in and do a good job."
