2025 City Kids Gala celebrates uplifting mission
The event drew a strong crowd of business and civic leaders to support City Kids' mission to meaningfully impact the lives of under-served youth through programs such as educational events, technology access, surf camps, financial literacy lessons, and, most recently, a collaborative art initiative called the City Kids Art Enrichment Program.
City Kids, founded by City Realty Group Managing Partners Fred Starikov and Stephen Whalen in 2012, has served more than 10,000 children during the past decade and provided $1 million to ensure children, schools, and youth development programs have the educational resources and technology they need.
'We are proud to partner with and support organizations such as The BASE which share our passion for inspiring children and giving them tangible tools to achieve their goals and fulfil their dreams,' Whalen said. 'City Kids is thankful for the wonderful support from the community and this gala exceeded our best hopes and was our most successful and impactful yet.'

Bedridden woman was trapped as her Massachusetts apartment burned. Then two cousins jumped into action
Two cousins jumped into action to save a bedridden woman who was trapped in her burning apartment, according to local reports. Crews responded to reports of a fire in an elderly woman's apartment at Bradford Condominiums in Woburn, Massachusetts early Friday morning, the local fire department said. The resident was bedridden, and witnesses could hear her calling for help as smoke filled the second-floor apartment, local outlet Boston 25 News reports. That's when two cousins jumped into action. Sadush Brahimaj and Narti Qato heard the woman screaming for help and managed to climb up onto her porch, WCVB reports. "It was so dark, it was so dark and smoky, we couldn't see anything, just hearing her voice, 'Help, help,' all the time," Brahimaj told WCVB. "We didn't think anything else, we just went inside." The cousins tried twice to get inside the apartment building. The first attempt was 'too much,' so Brahimaj said he used his jacket to cover his face like a mask. 'The second time we got her,' he told the outlet. That's when other residents joined in, shining their flashlights to help guide the men and the woman to safety, WCVB reports. Crews arrived after the pair had pulled the resident from her burning bedroom onto the balcony, the local fire department said. Firefighters used a ground ladder to carry the woman down. The woman was taken to Massachusetts General with burns and smoke inhalation injuries, NBC Boston reports. The two cousins were also hospitalized and released soon afterward, WCVB reports. Woburn Fire Captain Bill Stukey praised their rescue efforts, Boston 25 News reports. 'A couple of the guys were able to get up onto the porch, get in through the slider,' Stukey said. 'They went in the back and crawled through the smoke and actually dragged her out. They did a good job.' Wayward Webster lizard captured after weekslong search
A homecoming in Webster on Monday after a wayward lizard was finally found by wildlife experts. 'Goose,' a missing water monitor lizard was captured a few days ago when authorities got a call from a resident walking through Douglas State Forest. The resident spotted the five-foot-long reptile and snapped a photo of him. An animal rescue group raced to the scene, setting up baited traps with hard-boiled eggs, raw chicken, and other treats. Naturally, Goose couldn't resist and wandered into the trap. He was captured and reported to be in good health, thus ending the Goose chase. Goose is now in the custody of the Rainforest Reptile Shows. He'll be heading to the vet for a full exam and checkup on Tuesday. 'He's oh-so curious and starting to feel more comfortable around people again,' the reptile rescue business said. 'We're excited to see his progress and share it with everyone!'
