Keeping the brain sharp is crucial for overall well-being. From cognition, memory, and emotional regulation, a healthy brain plays a key role in how we function daily. While we often turn to puzzles, exercise, and diet to maintain brain health, scientists now say something much simpler, yet often overlooked, could be just as powerful: having someone who listens!
A study published in
JAMA Network
found a link between having someone you can count on to listen to you when you need to talk, with improved cognitive resilience.
A person who is all ears
According to the study, adults who have access to a good listener, a person who is available most or all of the time to provide emotional support, show significantly better cognitive resilience. This interaction will help the brain from declining, even with aging or diseases like Alzheimer's.
'We think of cognitive resilience as a buffer to the effects of brain aging and disease. This study adds to growing evidence that people can take steps, either for themselves or the people they care about most, to increase the odds they'll slow down cognitive aging or prevent the development of symptoms of Alzheimer's disease—something that is all the more important given that we still don't have a cure for the disease,' lead researcher Joel Salinas said.
About 5 million people in America are living with Alzheimer's disease, a progressive condition that affects mostly those over 65. This condition interferes with memory, language, decision-making, and the ability to live independently.
Salinas added that the results of this study indicate that people younger than 65 would benefit from social support. For every unit of brain volume loss, people in their 40s and 50s who had fewer listeners showed cognitive abilities similar to someone four years older than those who had more listeners.
'These four years can be incredibly precious. Too often, we think about how to protect our
brain health
when we're much older, after we've already lost a lot of time decades before to build and sustain brain-healthy habits. But today, right now, you can ask yourself if you truly have someone available to listen to you in a supportive way, and ask your loved ones the same. Taking that simple action sets the process in motion for you to ultimately have better odds of long-term brain health and the best quality of life you can have,' Salinas said.
The study
Researchers analyzed data from 2,171 participants in the Framingham Heart Study, one of the longest-running community-based studies in the U.S., with an average participant age of 63. The participants self-reported about the various types of social support they have, including access to someone who listens, offers good advice, and provides emotional support.
The cognitive resilience of the participants was measured as the relative effect of total cerebral brain volume on global cognition, using MRI scans and neuropsychological assessments.
Lower brain volumes tend to be associated with lower cognitive function. The researchers examined the modifying effect of individual forms of social support on the relationship between cerebral volume and cognitive performance.
They found that the cognitive function of individuals with greater availability of one specific form of social support was higher relative to their total cerebral volume. This particular form of 'social support' was the availability of a listener, and it was linked with increased cognitive resilience.

'Loneliness is one of the many symptoms of depression, and has other health implications for patients. These kinds of questions about a person's social relationships and feelings of loneliness can tell you a lot about a patient's broader social circumstances, their future health, and how they're really doing outside of the clinic,' Salinas said.
Researchers noted that further study is required for further understanding of the biological mechanisms that link psychosocial factors to brain health. 'While there is still a lot that we don't understand about the specific biological pathways between psychosocial factors like listener availability and brain health, this study gives clues about concrete, biological reasons why we should all seek good listeners and become better listeners ourselves,' Salinas concluded.

Ever noticed someone being lost in oblivion, picking their nose like time had frozen still? Well, you're not alone! We all have been witnesses to this slightly embarrassing yet quite common act. But did you know, this age-old habit of picking your nose might have a bigger impact on your health? A study has found a possible, though yet to be proven, connection between picking your nose and a higher risk of dementia. Read on to know more! What's happening? The research in question was published in Scientific Reports . The idea is this: if nose-picking damages the delicate inner tissue, it can create an easier pathway for certain bacteria to reach the brain. Once there, the brain may react in ways similar to the early signs of Alzheimer's disease. Researchers stress that this link is far from certain. The current evidence comes from studies in mice, not humans. Still, the findings could help scientists better understand how Alzheimer's starts, something that still remains a mystery. How the study was conducted The research team, led by scientists at Griffith University in Australia, studied a bacterium called Chlamydia pneumoniae. This germ can infect humans and cause pneumonia, and has also been found in most brains affected by late-onset dementia. In mice, the team discovered that the bacteria could travel along the olfactory nerve, the pathway connecting the nasal cavity to the brain. Damage to the nasal epithelium (the thin tissue lining the roof of the nasal cavity) made the infection worse. This damage triggered the mouse brains to release more amyloid-beta protein, which the body produces to fight infections. Unfortunately, amyloid-beta can clump into plaques, a hallmark often seen in people with Alzheimer's disease. "We're the first to show that Chlamydia pneumoniae can go directly up the nose and into the brain where it can set off pathologies that look like Alzheimer's disease," said neuroscientist James St John from Griffith University in October 2022, as quoted by Science Alert. He added, "We saw this happen in a mouse model, and the evidence is potentially scary for humans as well." Why scientists are now paying attention The bacteria spread quickly in mice, reaching the brain within 24 to 72 hours. Researchers believe bacteria and viruses may use the nose as a shortcut to the central nervous system. It's still unclear whether the same happens in humans or whether amyloid-beta plaques actually cause Alzheimer's. But St John says it's worth investigating: "We need to do this study in humans and confirm whether the same pathway operates in the same way," he said. "What we do know is that these same bacteria are present in humans, but we haven't worked out how they get there." Everyday habits and potential risks: Finding the link Nose-picking isn't rare; in fact, research suggests that up to 9 out of 10 people do it, along with several other animal species. While most see it as harmless, this study suggests there might be hidden risks. Until more is known, St John and his colleagues recommend avoiding both nose-picking and nose-hair plucking, as both can damage protective nasal tissue. The bigger picture in Alzheimer's research Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, eventually impacting the ability to carry out even simple tasks. It's the most common form of dementia. While symptoms can vary, they often include memory loss, difficulty with thinking and reasoning, and changes in mood and behavior. There's currently no cure, but treatments can help manage symptoms and slow the disease's progression. One key question researchers want to answer is whether amyloid-beta deposits are a temporary immune response that disappears after infection, or if they cause lasting harm. Alzheimer's is a complex disease with many possible causes, from age to environmental exposure. As St John explains: "Once you get over 65 years old, your risk factor goes right up, but we're looking at other causes as well, because it's not just age, it is environmental exposure as well. And we think that bacteria and viruses are critical." Every new piece of research adds to the puzzle. While the findings from this mouse study don't prove a direct link, they do highlight an intriguing possibility that could bring us one step closer to understanding and one day preventing Alzheimer's disease. By studying human brain tissue and mouse models, the researchers discovered that as Alzheimer's progresses, lithium in the brain gets trapped by amyloid plaques—clumps of protein that are a hallmark of the disease. This prevents lithium from protecting brain cells. The study by researchers from Harvard Medical School found, for the first time ever, that the human body naturally produces lithium and that it plays a role in slowing brain ageing. Natural lithium protects brain cells and its depletion is among the first changes that leads to memory loss, the research showed. New Delhi: The critical mineral lithium, a key component in electric vehicle (EV) batteries, is also present in the human body. And it could hold the cure for Alzheimer's disease, according to a new study published Wednesday in peer-reviewed journal Nature. The team, interestingly, also developed a new compound, lithium orotate, that avoids getting trapped by these plaques. In trials on mice, this compound reversed brain damage and restored memory function. The study said that future trials in humans could validate lithium's role as a missing link in understanding and preventing Alzheimer's disease. Snails can regrow the eye. Can it help humans? Small apple snails may hold the key to treatment for human eye injuries, including regeneration of the eye. A new study in Nature journal, published Wednesday, said that freshwater snails can fully regenerate their complex 'camera-type' eyes, which are very similar in structure and genes to the human eye. Led by the University of California, Davis, the research showed how snails regrow their eyes within a month, forming the lens, retina and even reconnecting optic nerves in case of damage. What makes the breakthrough exciting is that apple snail eyes share key developmental genes with humans, including pax6, a master gene for eye formation. Using CRISPR, a gene-editing technology, the team showed that disabling the pax6 gene in snails stops the eye from forming entirely, confirming its crucial role. Now, the scientists are exploring whether the gene also governs eye regeneration in snails. The scientists did point out that while the snails can anatomically form their eyes all over again, they're not sure if they can see the same with the new eyes. Their next experiment would be to test whether regrown eyes and the original ones work similarly. Astronomers find 'bridge of stars' between galaxies Astronomers from Brown University in the US have captured a bridge of stars stretching a million light-years between two galaxies in the Abell 3667 cluster, located 700 million light-years away from Earth. The faint glow that they have captured in high-resolution images is known as intracluster light (ICL). It is made when stars are being ripped from one galaxy and pulled into another—direct evidence that the two brightest galaxies in the cluster are merging. The discovery, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters Tuesday, used over 28 hours of data from the Dark Energy Camera in Chile. It confirms that the two galaxy clusters are merging in Abell 3667, a process that was previously suggested only by X-ray and radio observation. Insight from fossilised bird poop An intriguing study from University of Adelaide published last month in the peer-reviewed journal Current Biology has found that over 80 percent of parasite species once found on the kākāpō, a critically endangered New Zealand parrot, have vanished. The researchers' analysis process? Bird poop. The researchers analysed ancient and modern kākāpō droppings, some over 1,500 years old, using DNA and microscopy. They discovered that 9 of 16 parasite species found in the parrot's droppings disappeared before the 1990s, and four more were lost after the 1990s when the bird came under full population management by the New Zealand government. Though often seen as harmful, parasites are very important from an ecological sense, because they boost host immunity and suppress more dangerous infections. Their loss could have unseen impacts on both host species and ecosystems.
