'Silent Night, Deadly Night' unleashes killer Santa: Watch the trailer
The first teaser trailer has arrived for "Silent Night, Deadly Night" (in theaters Dec. 12), an unrated reimagining of the controversial 1984 cult horror movie written and directed by Mike P. Nelson ("Wrong Turn"). And this slasher Santa Claus doesn't mess around, using an axe and a shotgun with deadly intention and also down for impaling people on deer antlers.
Rohan Campbell, whose scary-movie resume includes "Halloween Ends" and "The Monkey," stars in the film as Billy. As a child, he witnesses Santa gruesomely murder his mom and dad on Christmas Eve, and it sparks his life goal to spread holiday fear instead of cheer. So every holiday, Billy gets in the familiar red suit and embarks on a yuletide massacre.
"Silent Night" is the latest unrated movie coming to theaters from Cineverse, the company which distributes the hit "Terrifier" franchise and is also releasing the upcoming "The Toxic Avenger" remake (out Aug. 29) starring Peter Dinklage. Cineverse is "this rogue independent studio that's all about helping artists get their films in front of audiences," chairman and CEO Chris McGurk told USA TODAY in March.
Maybe audiences in 2025 will be more embracing of a murderous St. Nick than in the 1980s. When the original "Silent Night" was released in November 1984, its ad campaign caused a kerfuffle and the filmed ended up being pulled from theaters amid parental outrage,

Gary Busey pleads guilty to criminal charge for unwanted touching
Actor Gary Busey is pleading guilty in a sexual misconduct case in New Jersey. Busey, 81, made a virtual appearance in New Jersey Superior Court Thursday, July 31, and entered a guilty plea to one charge of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, Busey's attorney Blair R. Zwillman confirmed to USA TODAY on Aug. 1. With the plea, Busey has admitted to "touching the buttocks of a woman without her permission," Zwillman said. The case stems from his August 2022 appearance at the Monster-Mania Convention, where several woman accused him of inappropriately touching them. The "Buddy Holly Story" actor initially faced five criminal charges in the case and pleaded not guilty during a March arraignment, court records show. Prosecutors have since dismissed the other charges. The actor was "overcharged" by county prosecutors due to his "celebrity status," Zwillman said, adding that his client should have faced a lower-level charge such as a disorderly persons offense for harassment. USA TODAY has reached out to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office for comment. Busey was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Buddy Holly in 1978's "The Buddy Holly Story." Aside from his film credits, which include "Point Break" and "Lethal Weapon," he's also forayed into reality television. In 2014, he won Season 14 of the U.K. show "Celebrity Big Brother." Busey also competed on Season 21 of "Dancing with the Stars" and in 2011 on "The Apprentice." In 2023, Busey was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run collision in Malibu. According to Entertainment Weekly, the unidentified woman whose car he collided with did not press charges against the actor.

New series based on 'The Holiday' is in the works
A new series based on the beloved 2006 romantic comedy "The Holiday" is in the works at Apple TV+. "The Holiday," directed by Nancy Meyers, starred Cameron Diaz as Amanda, a single American woman, and Kate Winslet as Iris, a single British woman. The two women swap homes during the Christmas season and unexpectedly find love after heartbreak with Amanda meeting Graham, played by Jude Law, and Iris connecting with Miles, portrayed by Jack Black. The film quickly became a hit and is now a Christmas classic. The new TV series version of "The Holiday" is expected to keep the storyline but will introduce viewers to new characters. Writer Krissie Ducker is set to executive produce and actor and comedian Rob Delaney is attached to write the new series, which will be produced with Left Bank Pictures.

"And Just Like That" is over, just like that.
