Old celebration picture resurfaces as jailed Sri Lanka police chief gets bail
"Underworld Deshabandu celebrates new year thanks to your help," reads a Sinhala-language Facebook post published on April 14, 2025.
It goes on to sarcastically thank Sri Lanka's ministers of justice and public security for police chief Deshabandu Tennakoon's release from jail after a magistrate in the southern city of Matara granted him bail (archived link).
"Many police officers who cannot do anything at all are in prison. Thanks to your support, Deshabandu can celebrate the new year," adds the post, which also shares a picture of him lighting a fire in apparent celebration with family.
Tennakoon was appointed Inspector General of Police in November 2023, despite Sri Lanka's highest court ruling that he had tortured a suspect in custody.
A court ordered his arrest in February for authorising an ill-fated raid which triggered a gun battle between rival police units in the coastal resort town of Weligama. An officer was killed in the shoot-out.
He went on the run for two weeks before turning himself in mid-March.
Legislators had voted unanimously to open a formal investigation into his conduct, and he is widely expected to be impeached unless he resigns (archived link).
Similar Facebook posts also shared the picture following Tennakoon's release on bail on April 10, four days before Sri Lanka celebrates its traditional New Year.
But a reverse image search on Google found the photo was posted on his Facebook account on April 14, 2024 (archived link).
It was part of an album showing the police chief marking the occasion with his family and was captioned in Sinhala: "Celebrated the New Year 2024 at home".
A review of Tennakoon's Facebook account shows the latest post was on February 4, and does not mention New Year celebrations after his release.
AFP has previously debunked misinformation related to the controversial police chief.

Bogus fifties found at Woodway Walgreens, man arrested
Woodway, Tx (FOX 44) – Counterfeit $50 bills used to buy a prepaid cash card in Woodway were traced back to a Waco man, leading to his arrest. Syngin Jon Chaffee was booked into the McLennan County Jail on forgery charges Wednesday after surveillance photos of the transaction were used to identify him. The original incident occurred April 5 when a man with a beard entered the Walgreens at Estates Drive and Woodway Drive and used four fifty-dollar bills to load $200 onto a prepaid card. An arrest affidavit said it was not initially noticed that the bills were counterfeit until after the transaction was complete and he had left the store. The incident was reported to the Woodway Public Safety Department by Walgreens who also provided the counterfeit bills along with the surveillance video of the transaction. The affidavit stated that after the investigator shared a still photo of the suspect in a county investigator e-mail, he got a tip on a possible ID of the man. He then searched the name on Facebook and was able to find an account and match that photo with those on the site and on a Texas ID belonging to Syngin Chaffee. Man faces animal cruelty charge after kitten thrown on roof The affidavit stated the investigator contact Chaffee who met with him at the police station. The affidavit said he gave a statement about making the transaction, but claimed he did not know the bills were counterfeit. The affidavit stated that of the four bills used in the transaction, one was real and three were bogus. Chaffee was then arrested and transported to the jail where he remained Thursday. WATCH: Coyote sightings in Kingsley; Police issue warning
KINGSLEY, Iowa (KCAU) —The Kingsley Police Department has issued a warning after a coyote was spotted in the town earlier this week. According to a Facebook post from the police department, the coyote was found attacking someone's pet who was on their porch.
