Blue Jays Make Roster Announcement Before Mariners Game

Yahoo18-04-2025

The Toronto Blue Jays have been up-and-down recently, winning two out of three games against the Atlanta Braves after splitting two against the Baltimore Orioles, winning three of four against the Boston Red Sox, and getting swept by the New York Mets.
However, these are good times in Toronto, as it's just one game behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East and recently locked up superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on a 14-year, $500 million contract extension.

Now, the Blue Jays (11-8) are getting even more good news that'll help them get through Daulton Varsho's (shoulder) injury.

Outfielder Nathan Lukes will be reinstated from the Paternity List and will be active against the Seattle Mariners on Friday night, via the team.
The 30-year-old is hitting .167 with three RBI and a .519 OPS in 12 games this season.
Lukes flashed potential last season when he slashed. 303/.371/.447 with one homer and 10 RBI in 22 games. The five-foot-11-inch, 180-pounder is Varsho's backup in center field, who has yet to play this season.
The Cleveland Indians (now Guardians) drafted Luke in the seventh round of the 2015 MLB Draft before trading him to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016. He then signed a minor league contract with Toronto in 2021 and made his big-league debut in 2023.

The Blue Jays will host the Mariners (10-9) for three games before going on the road to play the Houston Astros and New York Yankees. After that, they'll host the Boston Red Sox and Guardians.

Blue Jays Facing Bo Bichette Decision Before MLB Trade Deadline

Blue Jays Facing Bo Bichette Decision Before MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Toronto Blue Jays currently sport a 36-30 record and are tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for second place in the American League East. They also trail the first-place New York Yankees by four games, so they are in a decent spot at this juncture of the campaign. Advertisement The Blue Jays have also been trending in the right direction as of late, as they have won eight out of their last 10 games. If they keep this kind of play up, it would undoubtedly improve their odds of making the playoffs this year. With where the Blue Jays are in the standings right now, they will certainly be a team to watch at the trade deadline. This is especially the case when it comes to one of their top stars. In a recent article for ESPN, Bradford Doolittle argued that the Blue Jays' biggest objective before the deadline will be to decide whether or not they will trade pending free agent Bo Bichette. May 24, 2025; Tampa, Florida, USA; Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette (11) throws to first for an out against the Tampa Bay Rays in the eighth inning at George M. Steinbrenner Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Doolittle brought up the possibility of the Blue Jays trading Bichette for pitching help and replacing him in their lineup with one of their promising prospects, like Leo Jimenez or Josh Kasevich. Advertisement Doolittle writes: "Bichette has been better than last season, but he hasn't played so well that Toronto's postseason hopes would be torpedoed by sending him away in advance of his looming free agency, preferably for pitching help." Trading Bichette would be a massive move for the Blue Jays, as he has been an important part of their roster for multiple years. However, if they do not come to terms on a new deal before the deadline, Toronto may have no choice but to deal him. It would be tough if they lost a valuable asset like him for nothing in free agency. Bichette, 27, has appeared in 66 games this season with the Blue Jays, where he has eight home runs, 38 RBIs, and a .269 batting average. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa) BOSTON (AP) — Roman Anthony, the top prospect in baseball, hit a two-run double for his first major league hit and added a sliding catch in right field to help the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 on Tuesday night. One night after his MLB debut, when he went hitless and committed an error in an 11-inning loss, Anthony went 1 for 4 with his family in the stands and gave Boston a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a sharp double to left. Trevor Story added two hits for the Red Sox, including a solo homer over the Green Monster and onto Lansdowne Street. Advertisement Lucas Giolito, who gave up seven runs to the Angels in his last start — four of them before recording his first out — picked up his first win in five starts. Giolito (2-1) limited Tampa Bay to one unearned run — thanks to his own errant pickoff throw — on three hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings. Greg Weissert pitched the ninth for his first save. Ryan Pepio (3-6) gave up three runs on five hits and two walks, striking out nine in 5 2/3 innings for Tampa Bay. Key moment Boston took the lead for good in the first when Rafael Devers singled with one out in the first, went to third on Carlos Narváez's double and scored when Anthony lined a double to left. Gipson-Long pitches effectively and Torkelson homers as the Tigers beat the Orioles 5-3

BALTIMORE (AP) — Spencer Torkelson homered and Sawyer Gipson-Long pitched effectively out of the bullpen to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 on Tuesday night. Zach McKinstry hit two triples for the Tigers, who have won 11 of 15 and own the best record in the majors at 44-24. Detroit is 4-0 against the Orioles this season, outscoring them 22-9. Making his second start of the season as an opener for the Tigers, Brant Hurter allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings. Chase Lee (3-0) got the last out in the third, and Gipson-Long entered in the fourth after Javier Báez hit an RBI single in the top half for a 2-1 lead. Making his second appearance of the year after missing the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John and hip surgeries, Gipson-Long gave up one run and three hits with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Gipson-Long began the 2024 season on the IL with a groin strain. After just one rehab start, he underwent elbow surgery that April, followed by left hip surgery in July. The 27-year-old right-hander finally returned to the big leagues last week, but did not get a decision against the White Sox. Detroit scored five runs off Cade Povich (1-5) in the first five innings. The big blow was Torkelson's 16th homer, a drive to center with a man on that made it 5-1 in the fifth. Key moment Povich retired the first two batters in the fifth before Riley Greene doubled, Dillon Dingler hit an RBI single and Torkelson went deep, Key stat Detroit is 16-2 in its last 18 games against the AL East, its best mark since an 18-2 run against that division in 1973. The series continues Wednesday night with Detroit RHP Casey Mize (6-1, 2.91 ERA) — who is 4-0 in seven starts since April 13 — going up against RHP Zach Eflin (5-2, 4.47 ERA). ___
