Blue Jays Make Roster Announcement Before Mariners Game

Yahoo18-04-2025

The Toronto Blue Jays have been up-and-down recently, winning two out of three games against the Atlanta Braves after splitting two against the Baltimore Orioles, winning three of four against the Boston Red Sox, and getting swept by the New York Mets.
However, these are good times in Toronto, as it's just one game behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East and recently locked up superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on a 14-year, $500 million contract extension.

Now, the Blue Jays (11-8) are getting even more good news that'll help them get through Daulton Varsho's (shoulder) injury.

Outfielder Nathan Lukes will be reinstated from the Paternity List and will be active against the Seattle Mariners on Friday night, via the team.
The 30-year-old is hitting .167 with three RBI and a .519 OPS in 12 games this season.
Lukes flashed potential last season when he slashed. 303/.371/.447 with one homer and 10 RBI in 22 games. The five-foot-11-inch, 180-pounder is Varsho's backup in center field, who has yet to play this season.
The Cleveland Indians (now Guardians) drafted Luke in the seventh round of the 2015 MLB Draft before trading him to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016. He then signed a minor league contract with Toronto in 2021 and made his big-league debut in 2023.

The Blue Jays will host the Mariners (10-9) for three games before going on the road to play the Houston Astros and New York Yankees. After that, they'll host the Boston Red Sox and Guardians.

Red Sox-Yankees game Friday delayed due to rain

Update: First pitch is now scheduled for 7:30 p.m. NEW YORK — The Red Sox and Yankees game Friday here at Yankee Stadium will not start on time. First pitch was scheduled for 7:05 p.m. But the tarp is on the field and the game will be delayed due to rain, the Yankees announced. Advertisement This article will be updated when a new start time is decided. This is the first meeting between the two AL East rivals this season. Boston enters 30-34. The Yankees are 38-23. Red Sox righty Walker Buehler (4-3, 4.44 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Yankees righty Will Warren (3-3, 5.19 ERA). Struggling rookie Kristian Campbell is not in the Red Sox lineup. David Hamilton will play second base instead. Manager Alex Cora said Campbell will be in the lineup Saturday and Sunday. Catcher Carlos Narváez — who the Red Sox acquired in December from New York— will be the cleanup hitter. During his pregame media availability, Cora said starter Kutter Crawford's sore wrist has no structural damage. He also gave a positive update on Alex Bregman (right quad strain) who began his running progression Thursday. More Red Sox coverage Read the original article on MassLive.

Red Sox prospect (up to 99 mph in 7 shutout innings) wins league's Pitcher of Week

Boston Red Sox prospect David Sandlin was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. The 24-year-old's fastball was between 95-99 mph during his seven shutout innings for Double-A Portland against Altoona on Thursday. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out eight. Advertisement It was registered as a complete game shutout because the game went only 7 innings as part of a doubleheader that day. Sandlin has thrown 12 scoreless innings over his past two outings, giving up eight hits and one walk while striking out 14. The Red Sox acquired the fireballer — who topped out at 100.4 mph last season — from the Royals in February 2024 for right-handed reliever John Schreiber. Baseball America ranked Sandlin the Red Sox' No. 7 prospect entering 2025 and their No. 2 pitching prospect behind righty Luis Perales. MassLive ranked Sandlin No. 7 on its Top 25 Red Sox prospect list entering 2025. More On Red Sox Prospects Read the original article on MassLive.

How's ex-Red Sox prospect traded to Yankees for Carlos Narváez doing?

The Red Sox and Yankees will play for the first time this season on Friday at Yankee Stadium. The AL East rivals don't often make trades with each other, although deals between the two sides have been more common this decade. Advertisement Boston and New York traded with each other only twice from 1997-2020. But they have completed four trades since 2021. The latest came at the Winter Meetings in December when Boston acquired catcher Carlos Narváez for pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and $250,000 in international bonus pool space. MassLive ran a feature Thursday on Narváez who discussed the Yankees being the only team to offer him a contract when he was an amateur catcher in Venezuela. It initially looked like only a minor trade for a depth catcher who would compete to be the backup catcher on the 2025 Opening Day roster. Narváez not only won a spot on the Opening Day roster, but he's now overtaken Connor Wong as Boston's starting catcher. The 26-year-old is hitting .288 with a .356 on-base percentage, .456 slugging percentage, .812 OPS, five home runs, 12 doubles, 19 RBIs, 24 runs, 17 walks and 43 strikeouts in 47 games (177 plate appearances). Advertisement He's also been one of the league's top defenders behind the plate. He's in the 97th percentile in blocks above average (6), 94th percentile in framing (4) and 81st percentile in caught stealing above average (2). It looks like the Yankees also did well in the trade. Rodriguez-Cruz, a 21-year-old righty who reaches the upper-90s with his fastball, has made nine starts for High-A Hudson Valley this season. He is 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 57 strikeouts and 22 walks in 48 innings. He's held opponents to a .177 batting average. Lefties are batting .140 against him while righties are hitting .213. He had 19 swings and misses in a game April 25 against Asheville, leading all High-A pitchers in whiffs that day. He had 17 in a start against Wilmington on April 18. Advertisement Boston initially drafted Rodriguez-Cruz in the fourth round (105th overall) out of Leadership Christian in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Baseball America ranked him the Yankees' No. 16 overall prospect entering 2025. Narváez said Wednesday, 'Super proud to wear this uniform now with Boston. At the same time, I always say that I'm super thankful for what they (the Yankees) did for me. I grew up with them. It was nine years with them. So I'm thankful for what they did for me but at the same time, I've got a new role with a new team. The amazing thing is it's Boston. So super pumped for this trip (to New York).'
