India, Norway discuss deeper maritime ties; joint focus on green technologies, electric ferries, shipbuilding collaboration
New Delhi: India and Norway discussed broad-based cooperation in maritime technology, shipbuilding, clean fuels, and ocean management as Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal held bilateral meetings with his Norwegian counterparts during the Nor-Shipping event in Oslo.
The meetings with Norway's Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård and Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy Marianne Sivertsen Næss focused on
green maritime technologies
, ferry system electrification, ship recycling, and cooperation in the blue economy.
Highlighting India's initiatives under the '
Maritime India Vision 2030
' and 'Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047', Sonowal said, 'India is advancing port infrastructure, green shipping, shipbuilding, and digitalisation. Our ports are not just gateways to trade—they are becoming catalysts of clean energy transitions, supporting offshore wind, green hydrogen, and low-carbon logistics.'
Both sides discussed electrification of ferry systems, with India expressing interest in Norway's experience. 'India and Norway can continue this partnership and manufacture electric ferries and vessels for the emerging global demand. India is keen to partner with Norway for best practices in electrification of ferry systems to optimise our inland waterways,' Sonowal said.
The discussions built upon India's Green Coastal Shipping Programme and the Green Voyage 2050 initiative. Norway's capabilities in AI-driven port management, digital twins, and alternative fuels such as LNG, hydrogen and electric propulsion were explored in the context of India's MAITRI initiative.
Sonowal and Sivertsen Næss also reviewed cooperation in ship recycling, seafarer training, sustainable fisheries, offshore hydrocarbons, and ocean renewable energy. The Alang Ship Recycling Yard in Gujarat was discussed as a potential site for joint initiatives to promote sustainable ship-breaking practices.
'Norway has been a valued partner for India in the maritime domain and beyond. The recent EFTA-India Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement marks a significant milestone and reaffirms our strong economic cooperation,' Sonowal said.
India proposed a joint feasibility study with Norway for operationalising the Northern Sea Route (NSR), with collaboration in Arctic navigation, research and development in Arctic shipping, and the design of ice-class vessels.
Reiterating India's commitment to gender diversity, Sonowal referred to the 'Saagar Mein Samman' initiative and sought Norway's support in building human capital through seafarer training in areas like polar navigation and maritime cybersecurity.
Inviting Norwegian firms to explore joint ventures in ocean renewable energy, Sonowal said, 'India and Norway also share a robust and growing partnership in the Blue Economy, driven by their shared vision for sustainable ocean management.'
He added, 'The strong momentum in our bilateral engagement is likely to soar further as we agree to deepen our bilateral maritime cooperation. We will work closely to translate today's talk points into actionable items.'

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel New Delhi: Union home secretary Govind Mohan on Wednesday outlined five key outcomes of the two-day counterterrorism seminar organised by the National Security Guard (NSG) in the national capital. Citing the recent Pahalgam attack and the retaliatory Operation Sindoor , he emphasised the need to enhance domestic capabilities and global cooperation From drawing lessons from international experiences to discussing evolving threats, response mechanisms and counter strategies, Mohan highlighted the increasing use of social media, drones, and encrypted apps by terrorists and their handlers to evade law stressed the importance of leveraging technology in counterterror operations and conducting tech-enabled counter-IED (improvised explosive device) operations."Terrorism is a global threat-one that endangers not just India but the entire world. It has jeopardised national security across continents and inflicted deep wounds on the fundamental values of humanity. According to the Institute for Economics and Peace's 2024 Report, the number of countries impacted by terrorism has risen from 58 to 66 in 2024. The entire world is grappling with the devastation caused by terrorism," Mohan April 22 this year, 26 Indians lost their lives in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir."Whoever attempts such acts must pay the price. That is precisely why, through Operation Sindoor, we neutralised cross-border terrorism at its source. With precise military strikes on terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, we successfully destroyed key operational bases of terrorist organisations. This stands as a testament to the military skill and professional strength of our armed forces," Mohan at the valedictory session, he added: "Unfortunately, some countries and communities are associating terrorism with their identity or faith-and in doing so, are tarnishing the very idea of humanity. This problem needs to be eradicated from its roots. Whether or not a country is directly impacted by terrorism, it is essential for all nations-including India-to come together on a united platform. We must strengthen global cooperation, share technological solutions, and above all, raise public awareness against this menace."

CM Siddaramaiah asserts Karnataka's right to raise Almatti dam height despite Maharashtra's objections
BELAGAVI: In a major development, Chief Minister Siddaramaiahhas taken an aggressive stand with regard to his government's decision to increase the height of Almatti dam from the present 519.60M to 524.256 M. On June 9, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had urged Siddaramaiah in his letter to reconsider the state government's decision to increase the height of Almatti dam, claiming that the rise in dam height would result in floods in areas of Sangli and Kolhapur districts. In his letter to his Maharashtra counterpart written on June 11, Siddaramaiah expressed his government's commitment to increase the dam height. He clarified his government's stand not only on the submergence issues but also on its right to raise Almatti dam height to FRL (Full Reservoir Level) 524.256 M even without waiting for the publication of the award by the Union government under Section 6(1) of the Inter State Water Dispute Act of 1956.

11 years of Modi govt: Infra revolution boosting 'ease of living', says PM
The Union government and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled state governments on Wednesday continued to highlight the achievements of the 11 years of the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) dispensation, with the Prime Minister posting on social media details of the 'infrastructure revolution' during this period. "It's been 11 years of infrastructure revolution with outstanding infrastructure being added that has enhanced India's growth trajectory," Modi said on X. From railways to highways, ports to airports, India's rapidly expanding infrastructure network is boosting 'Ease of Living' and enhancing prosperity, he said. In another post, Modi said: 'India's push for next-gen infrastructure is powered by sustainability and long-term vision.' It is laying the foundations of a self-reliant India, he said. In a document prepared by the newly launched Press Information Bureau (PIB) Research, the government also pointed to the efficacy of the Pragati (pro-active governance and timely implementation) platform, which was put in place 10 years ago, in fast-tracking of infrastructure projects. It said the most recent meeting of Pragati, which the PM chairs, took place on May 29. This was its 47th meeting since its inception in March 2015. The government said since its launch, over 363 projects have been reviewed under the Pragati initiative, which enables the PM to directly engage with the secretaries of the government and chief secretaries of states via videoconferencing. The government also highlighted the external challenges that it has faced — whether in its response to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism with the Uri surgical strike in 2016, the Balakot air strike of 2019, and Operation Sindoor in 2025 — and how it has dealt with challenges of internal security, such as the threat of Naxalism. In Raipur, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the PM's target of uprooting Naxalism by March next year is being fulfilled. In Chhattisgarh, 425 Maoists have been neutralised, 1,443 arrested, 1,388 others have surrendered in the last one-and-a-half years, Sai said. 'Our security forces have broken the backbone of Maoism by neutralising top Naxalites like Basavaraju and Sudhakar,' he said. According to government data, left wing extremism (LWE) districts have reduced from over 100 in 2014 to a mere 18 now. The Opposition Congress on Wednesday said 'anti-people policies' have been the hallmark of the 11 years of the government at the Centre. Congress general secretary and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel pointed to a recent report to accuse the Uttar Pradesh government of concealing the number of people who died during the Kumbh stampede earlier this year, as the numbers were more than what was claimed. He said the number of deaths during the Covid pandemic, recently released data has shown, was much more than what the government had claimed. On govt's agenda: Delimitation, women quota implementation before 2029 LS polls Top government sources on Wednesday said the intent was to complete the process of delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies, as also reserving a third of the Lok Sabha and legislative Assembly seats for women, by the time the 2029 Lok Sabha elections are announced. The delimitation of seats and women's reservation will have to be based on the Census-2027 data, and a delimitation commission will have to be set up for the purpose. The Centre, on June 4, announced that the Census will be completed by March 1, 2027, and include enumeration of castes. However, there has been skepticism whether the data would be available in time for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. The provisional data for the 2011 Census was released on March 31, 2011, 25 days after its population enumeration phase ended, while the final data was released two years later on April 30, 2013. However, the government is hopeful of completing the process of delimitation by the 2029 polls since the Census-2027 will be the first digital Census, where enumerators will enter data into apps that it can process in real-time, facilitating quicker publication of datasets.
