India, Norway discuss deeper maritime ties; joint focus on green technologies, electric ferries, shipbuilding collaboration
New Delhi: India and Norway discussed broad-based cooperation in maritime technology, shipbuilding, clean fuels, and ocean management as Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal held bilateral meetings with his Norwegian counterparts during the Nor-Shipping event in Oslo.
The meetings with Norway's Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård and Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy Marianne Sivertsen Næss focused on
green maritime technologies
, ferry system electrification, ship recycling, and cooperation in the blue economy.
Highlighting India's initiatives under the '
Maritime India Vision 2030
' and 'Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047', Sonowal said, 'India is advancing port infrastructure, green shipping, shipbuilding, and digitalisation. Our ports are not just gateways to trade—they are becoming catalysts of clean energy transitions, supporting offshore wind, green hydrogen, and low-carbon logistics.'
Both sides discussed electrification of ferry systems, with India expressing interest in Norway's experience. 'India and Norway can continue this partnership and manufacture electric ferries and vessels for the emerging global demand. India is keen to partner with Norway for best practices in electrification of ferry systems to optimise our inland waterways,' Sonowal said.
The discussions built upon India's Green Coastal Shipping Programme and the Green Voyage 2050 initiative. Norway's capabilities in AI-driven port management, digital twins, and alternative fuels such as LNG, hydrogen and electric propulsion were explored in the context of India's MAITRI initiative.
Sonowal and Sivertsen Næss also reviewed cooperation in ship recycling, seafarer training, sustainable fisheries, offshore hydrocarbons, and ocean renewable energy. The Alang Ship Recycling Yard in Gujarat was discussed as a potential site for joint initiatives to promote sustainable ship-breaking practices.
'Norway has been a valued partner for India in the maritime domain and beyond. The recent EFTA-India Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement marks a significant milestone and reaffirms our strong economic cooperation,' Sonowal said.
India proposed a joint feasibility study with Norway for operationalising the Northern Sea Route (NSR), with collaboration in Arctic navigation, research and development in Arctic shipping, and the design of ice-class vessels.
Reiterating India's commitment to gender diversity, Sonowal referred to the 'Saagar Mein Samman' initiative and sought Norway's support in building human capital through seafarer training in areas like polar navigation and maritime cybersecurity.
Inviting Norwegian firms to explore joint ventures in ocean renewable energy, Sonowal said, 'India and Norway also share a robust and growing partnership in the Blue Economy, driven by their shared vision for sustainable ocean management.'
He added, 'The strong momentum in our bilateral engagement is likely to soar further as we agree to deepen our bilateral maritime cooperation. We will work closely to translate today's talk points into actionable items.'

Young horticulture graduates told to update their skills
Director-General of the International Crop Research Institute of Semi-Arid Tropics, Hyderabad, Himanshu Pathak has urged young horticulture graduates to update their skills to face new challenges in farm sciences. 'As graduates who are ready to enter a world of opportunities remember that horticulture today goes beyond agriculture. It includes data science, artificial intelligence, climate resilience, food innovation and sustainable ecosystems. Whether your path is in research, agribusiness, urban agriculture or conservation, the skills you acquire here will serve you well. However, you should stay updated, learn new skills, acquaint yourselves with emerging fields and be ready to face new challenges,' he said in Bagalkot on Tuesday. He was delivering the convocation address at the University of Horticultural Sciences. 'As you know well, over 50% of the country's population is dependent on agriculture. There are vast opportunities in horticulture which farmers should utilise to improve their economic status. Horticulture can help them tide over the economic crisis they face. Horticulture can thus contribute to the overall economic growth of the country,' he said. 'Students should use their knowledge not only for personal success but also to uplift farmers, strengthen food systems and nourish and protect the environment,' he said. 'By 2025, horticulture crops in Karnataka are expected to be grown in 2.68 million hectares. This reflects a steady growth trend. Districts like Dharwad, Belagavi, Kolar, Vijayapura and Chikkamagaluru are known for mangoes, grapes, spices and vegetables. The Union and State governments have introduced several schemes for facilitating horticulture crops like the Integrated Horticulture Development Plan 2.0 and schemes by Mango Development Board. Farmers will also be given assistance in branding, marketing and export promotion,' he said. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot said that horticulture crops not only improve the lives of rural people but also help boost the development of the country. 'Farmers can become economically strong in horticulture and agriculture with new technology and value addition,' he said. He said that it was a welcome sign to see women dominating the field of horticulture and agriculture. The Governor gave away medals and certificates to students. As many as 95 gold medals were awarded to 35 students. Students were given 508 (Hons), (Food Technology), 144 Horticulture degrees and 42 in nine departments during the 14th convocation of the university. South Indian states will be engines of growth, says Dharmendra Pradhan
South Indian states with progressive governments will be the growth engines for the country as it strives to become a developed nation by 2047. The entire nation is proud of them, said Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday. The Centre has not yet made any strategy on the proposed delimitation of parliamentary constituencies, he said, and quoted Union Home Minister Amit Shah to say that there would be no discrimination against the South states on this count. Talking to the media to present a progress report on the 11 years of Modi Government, he said that the tentative Census schedule has been released and women's quota too has to be taken into account. South along with Western India, especially Maharashtra and Gujarat, will continue to be ahead of the rest of the country due to their historical background, knowledge base and hard work. Mr. Pradhan also justified more private universities pointing out that enrolment in higher education need to be enhanced from the current 27% to 50% by 2035. 'We need more colleges, quality educational institutions, and universities. We have recently opened up the sector for foreign universities. But, 75% students continue to study in government funded institutions,' he said. Golden period On the Centre's performance front, the Minister claimed that the last 11 years will be judged by history as a 'golden period' because of the manner in which the country had prospered economically by becoming the fourth largest and having drastically reduced poverty rates. 'From a fragile economy, we have become a destination for global investments. Our digital payment system has cut corruption, and government capex has increased to ₹12 lakh crore from ₹2/3 lakh crore. Our government comprises 60% SC/ST/BCs. It will be remembered as a welfare, caring and sensitive government for the common people,' he said. 'Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have delivered a transparent, decisive and trustworthy governance,' he added.
